The two men screamed because Ning was doing something to them without even touching them.
Their bodies began twisting slowly from the waist, their torsos turning in directions their bones and muscles were never meant to follow. They tried to resist, grabbing at their own bodies and forcing themselves back, but whatever Ning was doing ignored their strength completely.
The others stared in horror but were unable to do anything more than watch the two men slowly twist to death. Some wanted to scream. Some wanted to beg Ning to let them go.
And yet, no words came at all.
All they could do was watch them die.
The two men continued twisting.
Their shoulders turned farther while their hips remained fixed, stretching muscle and skin until the pressure became unbearable. One of them tried to activate his ability, but Ning did not even bother looking at whatever power he attempted to use.
Ning glanced across the rest of them.
"System, have any of these people done anything that would make me regret killing them?"
<Multiple members have been involved in kidnapping, murder, trafficking, and violent coercion.>
Ning’s expression remained calm.
"That answers that."
He swept one arm across the air.
The remaining men no longer had any reason to be scared.
Or rather, they lacked the ability to be.
A thin line appeared across each of their bodies, followed immediately by blood as every man except the two still twisting was cut cleanly in half. Several collapsed before they understood what had happened, while others managed only a brief cry before their upper bodies struck the ground.
The girl stared at the scene without moving. If that had only happened to a single person, she might have been horrified. But to see it happen to nearly everyone except the two, it simply made her numb. She couldn’t find any emotion to express as the shock left her completely still.
The two remaining men were still alive, but they had long since lost the ability to take in what was happening around them. All they could do was scream from their own pain.
Their bodies attempted to make them lose consciousness so they would no longer feel the pain, but Ning kept that from happening. He kept them conscious so that they would feel every single instance of it.
Just like Alya had.
Ning looked toward them for a moment, a question coming to him.
"System, I thought Leamor’s men were behind the others. But they were clearly ahead of the other two," he said.
<These aren’t Leamor’s men. They belong to a newly formed coalition between the other two High-Elf candidates.>
"Huh? But these men belong to Leamor, do they not?" Ning asked.
<They no longer do. They switched their allegiance some time ago>
"They did?" Ning asked in some surprise. "But that would mean that the other two already knew about Alya, right?"
<The other two are already aware of that fact>
Ning narrowed his gaze. "I see. I should pay those two a visit when I have the time. Is there anyone else out there who is a running candidate for the throne, albeit not a frontrunner?"
<No such person exists at the moment."
"Okay, we’ll need to create one then. I don’t have it in me to leave this broken country in the hands of those criminals."
The men reached the end of the line. Their screams had become more desperate.
The twisting continued until muscle finally began tearing apart, followed by bone and skin as their bodies rotated farther than anything living could survive. Blood poured down their sides, and the pressure inside them finally became too much to contain.
Their torsos separated at the waist.
The upper halves dropped away like the tops of uncapped bottles, hitting the ground beside what remained of their lower bodies.
Silence finally returned to the forest.
"Now that that’s done."
Ning turned toward the High-Elf girl.
The girl stood completely still, unable to make a single peep. Her mouth was open, but no sound or scream came out.
Ning looked toward her and saw that whatever fear she had felt before had now been replaced by shock so complete that she could barely react to anything around her.
He walked closer, this time without her backing away. Ning waved his arm, and a large coat appeared around the girl.
"You might catch a cold if you stay like that," Ning said.
The girl looked at him, but she still seemed unable to speak. Ning didn’t mind.
"Could you tell me your name?" he asked.
The girl slowly came out of her stupor, her breathing growing more and more ragged. She clutched the coat, feeling its warmth, while also moving backward in fear.
"Who... Who are you?" she asked, croaking more than actually speaking the words.
"I asked fir— never mind. My name is Valen Jassens. I’m a hero from Conjora who goes by the name Blackfang. You might have heard of me?" Ning asked.
The girl shook her head slightly.
Ning shrugged. "That’s perfectly fine. May I have your name as well?"
"I’m... Minhya," the girl said.
"Minhya. That’s a nice name," Ning said. "I am aware of your royal blood, Minhya. So, I’ve come here to rescue you."
"Who... Who sent you?" she asked.
"Nobody. I came here myself," Ning said. "Would you like to go with me?"
The girl narrowed her eyes. "Do I have a choice?" she asked.
"Yes, you do," Ning told her. "I’m not here to capture you. I am not from this country, so I won’t gain anything by taking you away for myself. I simply happened to learn that the three leaders were after you, so I came over."
The girl remained silent, still distrustful.
"My wife used to be like you. A High-Elf of the royal bloodline. She left this country over a decade ago, but they found her six years ago and killed her when they discovered that she had already married me and had our child," Ning said. "Her name was Alya. And I’m trying to save you so that you don’t end up like her."
The girl’s eyes slowly widened.
"Big Sister Alya?"
