Reincarnated as an Energy with a System

Chapter 1982: Return to Brief Heroism

Minhya looked at the aftermath of the explosion, which had left a gaping hole in the sand that was completely blackened, as though the sand had fully turned into glass. Steam came steadily out of the region, as the heat there was still far too much for the water.

Though slowly, it calmed down, and the waves returned to the shore, the ocean water filling the hole. When the waves drew back, they left a large pond on the shore. As Minhya looked around, she saw several such holes.

"These were all him?" she asked.

"All of them. Yes," Ning answered.

She looked back toward the enormous cloud of dust that still hung high in the air.

"And he can do that anytime he wants?" she asked again.

Ning couldn’t help but laugh at her disbelief. "Yes. He did it deliberately."

Jun’Tal returned to them, still rubbing his head slightly.

Ning looked toward the destroyed section of coastline before nodding with approval. "That was probably the largest explosion you’ve created on purpose so far."

Jun’Tal looked surprised. "Really?"

"Your understanding of how much energy is enough is becoming better and better with time," Ning said.

Jun’Tal looked toward the damage again and grinned a little.

"Thanks," he said. "Though I think I could do much better than that without affecting anyone else."

"You probably can, but this is fine," Ning said. "There’s no point in getting cocky right now. You are the only person who will get hurt in the end."

The young man shrugged. What could he really say except stay in his lane and try not to hurt others?

Emma nodded in agreement with their conversation. "Your upper control is improving. Now you need to make the same progress at the lower end."

Jun’Tal sighed. "Back to making more pops, is it?"

"You need to get more efficient with it, so yes," Emma said. "I can tell that you’re still wasting a significant portion of your energy as heat. You need to convert it all to sound."

Jun’Tal nodded seriously. "Yes, I must do that," he said.

Minhya watched him with a very different expression now.

The boy who had looked completely ordinary only minutes earlier had now become an anomaly in her mind that she couldn’t so easily understand. Was he really one of the strongest people in the entire world, then?

As if hearing her inner thoughts, Ning glanced toward her.

"That was only a fraction of what he can actually do," he told her.

Minhya slowly looked at him. "A fraction?"

"A very small one," Ning said. "I don’t believe it was even a single part out of a thousand."

"WHAT?" Minhya asked.

Jun’Tal looked uncomfortable hearing Ning talk about him that way within earshot and even got a little red when he felt Minhya’s gaze on him. He wasn’t sure how to react in front of someone who was essentially a princess of the High-Elves.

Meanwhile, he was just a simple human.

Ning turned toward Emma. "Keep looking after both of them for now, okay? I will be back in a bit."

Emma raised an eyebrow. "Both?"

"Jun’Tal needs training, and Minhya needs somewhere safe until we decide what comes next."

Minhya looked toward Ning. "Where are you going?" she asked.

Ning stretched slightly and looked toward the distant horizon.

"I’ve spent a lot of time dealing with politics, conspiracies, dangerous children, and royal families lately. I need to go back to doing something simpler."

Ning put on his mask, becoming Blackfang.

"I should probably go be a hero for a while."

Before leaving the island, Ning asked Minhya to remain there for a while longer and let Emma look after her until he finished dealing with a few matters elsewhere.

Minhya was not entirely comfortable with depending on someone she had only just met, but after everything she had seen from Ning and Emma, she understood that the island was still the safest place available to her.

"You don’t need to make any decisions beyond what you already have," Ning told her. "For now, stay here, get some rest, and let Emma help you with anything you need. Once I’ve handled a few things, we can start figuring out how to make your claim in Faedria without throwing you straight into another dangerous situation."

Minhya nodded slowly. "I can wait. I’ve spent long enough running that a few more days somewhere safe won’t hurt."

Emma gave Ning a small wave from nearby, making it clear that she would handle things from there. With that settled, Ning left the island and returned to Conjora, deciding that it had been long enough since he had properly involved himself in his public role as Blackfang.

As soon as he returned, he immediately went around as a bat, searching for people to help, crimes to fight, and bad guys to defeat.

People cheered for him when he landed next to them and dealt with their situations. Though some people began shouting at him, chiding him for creating trouble with other countries and for nearly destroying all the relations the other countries had with Conjora.

Ning understood their panic, though he couldn’t do much about it. He also knew how needless the panic was, but revealing that would create more confusion, so he chose to keep his mouth shut for the moment.

"You will all receive my answer in due time," he told the people who criticized him. "I will soon host another press conference, and I will answer all of your questions. I promise."

That gave the people some hope, but not a whole lot. Until he actually gave them the answers they desired, the citizens wouldn’t really stop being against him.

Ning found Blake some time later, explained what he was thinking, and asked for advice on whether it was even a good idea in the first place. He had no idea what the Angel thought about the idea of a press conference.

Blake sighed a little and nodded in the end.

"With everything that has happened, that truly might just be the best way to move forward."
