I was at my desk in my room writing when the window in front of me started getting bright. I checked the time. It was almost five. I leaned back in the chair and smiled wryly by myself.
Why was I writing instead of sleeping? Because I could not sleep. To be more precise, my lower half had only just finally calmed down. I had gone to look in on Pafa, Micon, and Scon sleeping once, but I was too lively down there and came back to my own room. Even lying on the bed my eyes stayed wide awake, and keeping them closed started to feel tiring. So I had no choice but to start writing... I had not expected to notice it was morning.
I figured they had been trying to be helpful, but I decided that next time I drank the tonic I would take only a little. From past experience with tonics I had expected to get suddenly sleepy a few hours later. This was my first time drinking one made with white token powder, though, so I had no idea what would happen and that was a little scary. Please just last through today, I wished in my heart.
I stretched both arms up while still sitting, then stood and quietly opened my door to go get some outside air. Pafa and the others were sleeping in Nimi’s room today, and Nimi should have been sleeping with them. The living and dining areas were quiet. I headed outside without making a sound.
Outside the inn the pleasant morning air and a comfortable breeze brushed my body. We were in the middle of the hot season, the hottest part, but mornings still felt this good. After this period the temperature should drop little by little, so I could push through if I just endured it now.
...Thinking about heating magic tools early with Croana sounded fun too. Cold-season events were few if you looked at the whole year, so it was a good time to prepare all kinds of things. Once I started thinking about the students I could not stop. I folded my arms and sat on the step at the inn entrance.
The moment I sat down, something suddenly stroked my left cheek gently. I jumped in surprise. It had been a while since someone touched my cheek out of nowhere. I smiled in a troubled way and kept my voice down.
"Sharle?"
"Good morning, Raide-sama. Fufu. Couldn’t you sleep?"
"That’s right. You figured it out well."
"It’s still quite early to be getting up."
"There’s also last night," Sharle whispered with her mouth by my left ear. After that her figure gradually became visible. She sat on my left, pulled her face away from my ear, and gently stroked my left cheek while narrowing her eyes and smiling like I was precious. That look made me embarrassed. I rubbed the back of my neck with my right hand. I still was not used to Sharle making that face. Not just Sharle. When any of my lovers did it I still got embarrassed.
After stroking my cheek for a while her expression turned serious and she started talking.
"I would like you to come to the royal castle today."
"...Sounds like trouble."
"Yes. I can’t tell you the details, but I think it’s quite a bit of trouble..."
"Do you know the cause?"
"...It’s you, Raide-sama."
"Hm...? Wait. Is it me?"
"Yes. Without a doubt."
Sharle nodded at my surprised face with a troubled smile. No, no. Trouble caused by me? And trouble involving the royal castle was a pretty big deal...
While I was thinking with a difficult face, Sharle piled on.
"It’s a message from the chancellor who got dragged out of bed in the middle of the night. ’Bring liquor,’ he said... Fufufu. He’s still running around even now."
"I should probably go now..."
"No. After academy is fine. They seem tired as well."
"Got it. I’ll head over as soon as academy ends."
"Yes. Please do."
"They" meant a person? Who in the world? ...No, I had no idea. Nothing came to mind. The captain was... pretty far away, and if something happened he would come to Nifa Inn. Same for Taylor. The old unit members would come here too if something happened... so who?
I answered while pressing my right hand to my forehead, unable to think of a cause. Sharle smiled a little like she was enjoying herself, stroked my left cheek once, then leaned in. She was as good as ever at switching between work and personal time. I had been worrying and it almost made me laugh.
Sharle rubbed her right cheek against my left shoulder. Thanks to the cool morning air, her body heat as she pressed close felt good. While I smelled the soft spring-breeze scent, I wondered what liquor I should bring the chancellor.
It was past nine.
I had gone to the academy. Normally I would head straight to the instructor’s office, but today I had come to the library to look something up. I wanted materials and books on medicinal herbs. I folded my arms and tilted my head a little while looking at the library directory. The castle matter bothered me, but sitting around worrying would not help. So I had come to look things up as a change of pace, but...
There were some, but it felt like far too few. Was that my imagination? Just compiling what I remembered had already made about six thick books, so I had thought there would be more once you added the different cultures. The directory only pointed to a single shelf’s worth. I still walked over there, head tilted.
"Are there books that write about us?"
"Yeah, there are, but they were folklore. What’s with the sudden question?"
"Fufufu. No. I’m not Tetrin, but I was curious where Raide-sama learned so much about us."
"...Then we’ll have to solve that mystery with Tetrin. I don’t know the method, but I’ve heard that sometimes they hear things through you and the others."
"My. So you noticed."
Sharle laughed quietly and happily beside my face and tightened her hug. Today her only escort duty was her alone. She told me with a happy smile that she had switched turns so she could deliver the castle message. She lifted her body a little so her weight would not rest on me, gently wrapped both arms around my neck from behind, and clung to me. She rubbed one cheek against my head and buried her face in the hair at the back of my head, spoiling herself because no one around could see. That side of Sharle was fresh, so I let her do as she liked without stopping her.
We reached the shelf from the directory. I pulled out books and looked inside, but... weren’t the contents thin? And the effects were different in places. Opening another book, the contents were far too different from the last one. What was this? It felt warped, like knowledge of medicinal herbs alone had been passed down scattered according to the era. If you traced history that kind of thing did happen, but looking at the dates written at the end of the books, the gap was not that large. I would understand gaps of a hundred years or ten years, but these were all only a few years apart. And even the oldest ones were on a ten-year scale. I could not find anything older.
...Strange. In the game this library was supposed to have a medicinal herb list.
From her presence I could tell Sharle, peeking out from beside my head, was tilting her head too.
"Pretty inconsistent for an academy library, isn’t it?"
"You think so too, Sharle. Hm. It might be faster to ask Croana. I’ll go ask her later."
"I think that’s best too."
I put the books back and turned my back to the shelf to return to the instructor’s office. The instant I did, I heard a book fall behind me and turned. Sharle stepped away from me and tensed a little, but the only thing in the corridor was a single fallen book. There was no one else around, but the book was too thick to have fallen on its own. Had there even been a book that thick on the shelf?
Looking at the shelf, there did not seem to be a spot it had come from... that was a little scary. Staying alert of the surroundings, I picked up the old, thick brown book with one hand. Nothing was written on the cover.
I looked at Sharle, who was watching our surroundings. She shook her head as if to say nothing was there. I felt the urge to open it, but this looked like an event I had seen before and I had a bad feeling, so I stopped. If I was going to open it, the best thing would be to do it in front of Croana and the others.
Sharle and I looked at each other and nodded, then I headed for the principal’s office with the book in one hand.
