Kalli took a moment to restock the ammunition and bandages, as the non hero fighters had gone through quite a lot of the medical supplies.

They had no magical healers in their ranks, those were all at the front lines, except a few who had been pulled back to help the more seriously injured. Not many of them, as they were more urgently needed on the front lines, where the Ogres had long since made it to the walls, and begun their breaching attempts.

If they were better at working together, they would have long since managed the task, but as it was, the vast majority of them were still fighting from outside the walls, driven back by the force of heroes above them.

Only a handful had managed to make it to the top without being repelled, and those were the priority targets of both heroes and turrets.

So, once they made it, they rarely lasted more than a moment.

Over and over, that pattern repeated, with the heroes forcing the Ogres back, and the Air Defence batteries on the dorms clearing any Ogres in the distance who attempted to form groups to fight together.

Then, the strangest sight of many odd things Kalli had seen that day met her eyes.

A large force of naked olive skinned men with swords in their hands began to charge out of the Academy area and attack the Goblins that were still fighting with the locals.

[ Dear System, I know that I might not be the most pious administration official that you could have asked for, but today I give you thanks for this eye candy that you have blessed me with. ]

In the back of her mind, Kalli could have sworn that she heard someone laughing, but it was possible that she had spoken out loud, and someone had actually been laughing at her.

Obviously, they were heroes, resurrected at the pod. But a small army of naked buff guys was still a blessing from above.

Or below?

Many of them had naval themed tattoos, so they might have been another fleet’s heroes, or the residents of an underwater base that had been breached by sea monsters. Certainly, they weren’t any heroes that she knew.

She would find out soon enough.

Once the Goblins in the inner courtyard were clear, the men began making their way to the hall of heroes, guided by the locals, and one burly flamethrower wielding widow who did not mind at all that they had shown up nude.

There weren’t only men, though.

Once they were on their way, the ladies left the dorm, wearing the white sheets that every resurrected hero was granted in the style of a toga.

"You know, you can tie the sheet like they did, or simply wear it as a skirt. It keeps the monsters’ weapons away from the dangly bits." Kalli offered as the first of the new arrivals made it to her door.

The man laughed as Kalli gave him a sly smile that said she wasn’t actually upset with his choice.

"I can see already that you are going to be trouble. Might I ask, where are we, and what is the situation here?"

"You are in Marimgar, the third trial is underway, and the city is holding.

Or, what’s left of the city is holding. We’ve got Charlie Group of the Kalkan Fleet here with us, as they have chosen to join forces for this trial, and I have been granted some advantages by the System thanks to my class that allow me to offer goods in exchange for points earned by completing System assigned tasks.

Now, where did you come from, and what is the situation there?

I am going to assume it’s not good if so many heroes have been resurrected here at my doorstep."

The man nodded "I will have to ask you to explain how that is possible, but we are from The Irashian Royal Navy, stationed at the underwater survival base.

The base took heavy damage during the earthquakes associated with the volcanic eruptions, and we were unable to fully repair the facility before the third trial began and the larger sea monsters found our location.

They breached the containment, and the entire complex either flooded or was crushed by the pressure.

Now, mind explaining how we didn’t stay dead? And where is the King? Or the Grand Duke and the Agriculture Minister? Their families?"

Kalli shrugged. "I have a resurrection pod, purchased from the System, but it only works on heroes. If they were not at least level one, with the status of a hero, they would not have come back at the pod.

So, I suspect that they are right where you left them.

I would ask where the base is, but it has to be within a hundred kilometres of here, or you would have been out of range. So, it’s likely in the deep waters not too far offshore."

The hero nodded. "It is. Or, it was.

This is a disaster. Almost all the bunkers are gone, the deep sea base is gone, the moon base is gone, and Marimgar is what? A single fortress with a couple Kalkan ships in the harbour?"

Kalli frowned. "Did you not know that the Kalkans got upgraded to escape Arks during the first trial? They’re working with spaceships, not ships in the harbour. But they had to come ashore because massive sea monsters were dealing them too much damage to remain in the ocean.

Plus, there is the matter of claiming territory.

But let’s skip over that. You said that our nation had a moon base, and it’s lost?"

The hero nodded as everyone else filed into the hall to wait for Kalli’s briefing.

"Yes, it was attacked by some sort of elemental beasts that breached the outer walls and decompressed the facility. It only lasted a few days into the first trial. Now, we need to know how you’ve held on this long out here in the open."

Kalli laughed. "Held on? With the System on our side, we’ve been thriving since the first trial, where we misunderstood the requirements.

We should have saved more civilians.

But that’s not the point. We’re getting quests here. The quests give us the option to get System Points that can buy skills, gear and supplies.

Then, there are the edible plants and animals we found outside.

Sure, we’ve been set way back in our status as a city, but we’re in no way struggling to survive. With the exception of today, when the trial threw wave after wave of monsters at us.

I don’t know if we’re going to have to face some massive monster like the ocean has, but we’ve killed over a million smaller ones already today, and it’s still ongoing.

Now, every time that we get new heroes, I offer them the same deal.

I will give you the first set of gear, and you pay it back once you’ve completed enough quests to get the points. That keeps everyone on relatively equal footing at the start, and doesn’t leave weak spots in our defensive formations.

How many of you are there?"

The look on the man’s face, and the crowding in the room said it all.

There were a lot of them, but they were not doing well.
