Reincarnated As The Heroes Guide

All day long, the scout teams patrolled, while the heroes stationed along the wall made bets about who would be the first to get stuck.

Each of the patrol routes ran along the riverbank for some distance, or along the shoreline.

There was a very real chance that they would get stuck in the mud at some point, or get themselves bogged down in soft volcanic ash. But so far, nobody had, and the vehicles were proving to be incredibly capable of traversing even the most extreme terrain.

They even floated.

With that ability, they could go nearly anywhere in the territory, and even though crossing the river was slow, they could safely do it.

Some of the vehicles, after multiple painfully slow water crossings, had the assault speeders toss them a line, so they could be pulled across more quickly than their wheels propelled them through the water.

That worked remarkably well, though the thrust of the speeders was limited.

They weren’t designed for cargo, and just having two large men in heavy armour on them was already getting close to their rated weight capacity. But they pulled the vehicles forward well enough.

Once everyone learned the trick to getting the vehicles across the water, that made the patrol routes much more smooth, and soon they had patrols pacing back and forth all around the edge of their firing range.

But they were also finding many wonderful things.

Everywhere that they had blasted the ground clear of volcanic debris, the churned soil was beginning to regrow with fresh vegetation of a sort that none of them recognized. But the teams took time out to check, so they knew if it was aggressive, and what other properties it might have.

They picked samples to bring back to the Academy for testing, in case some of this was edible.

But some of it clearly appeared to be.

If they had to name it, there was a large patch of what they would call barley, nearly ripe already, though it had only been growing two days. Then there were small trees growing, which the heroes hoped might bear fruit.

Those, they didn’t pull entirely, they simply snipped a branch to use as a cutting.

If it turned out to be a fruit tree, they didn’t want to lose it to the next wave of monsters.

None of the other plants turned out to be root vegetables, which was unfortunate. The chefs were hoping for something equivalent to garlic and onions. They had the versions from the old world, but they hadn’t seen an equivalent magical plant yet.

That was an unfortunate one for the kitchen staff, but they didn’t really need to replace all their spices, as they had the old version growing in the greenhouses.

They just needed to upgrade the core of the dishes for increased energy, and they had that covered now.

The upgrades for the greenhouses had given them all sorts of new plants that hadn’t been in the old ones. Staple foods like grains, the raspberries, peach and pear trees, carrots and lentils.

The lentils were a huge win for the workers in the greenhouse.

They made many excellent dishes, just like the tubers did. But unlike the tubers, the lentils did not fight back. That was definitely a win when the staff doing the harvesting were mostly level 0 with no combat skills.

But now that Kalli was doing the math, they had an awful lot of level 0 residents.

In fact, the vast majority of the residents in the city appeared to be level 0, going by the spam of completions that she was seeing for four hours of work completed during the day.

It had gotten so extreme that the walkway beside the Hall of Heroes was one of the busiest streets in town.

You could walk by, and the statue would offer to complete your quest if you were near the wall. So, that was how everyone who wasn’t a hero, and didn’t need to buy anything from the shop, had chosen to complete their quest today.

It was a wonderful coincidence, but Kalli did wish that there was a longer range on the completion. If they could at least do it from the main driveway, it would be much more convenient to everyone.

Perhaps she should put her statue in the shopping mall?

If she did that, then people would walk by it all the time anyhow, and wouldn’t need to come to the Hall of Heroes, which was rather out of the way, being within the inner walls of the Academy.

Now that there were thousands of regular workers who needed their pay, she would have to do something about it.

Outdoors seemed too tacky, even for her.

But in one of the buildings near the gate, which was set up as a large shopping and work centre, would be perfect. She would just need to arrange it so that the area was something like a market or gathering place.

Oh, an indoor park would be perfect. Set on the third level, as that was the one with the walkways between buildings.

Then she could put it in line with the main gates, so that people coming in and out of the city later would be able to use it.

Unless she could buy more statues. Or set up something equivalent.

There were definitely still some minor loopholes in her system.

While she pondered, Kalli searched the store, looking for more options. Oh, there was one that might work.

{Administration Building} Automated kiosk for bureaucratic filings and documents.

Kalli pulled up the description, and while she didn’t buy one right away, she did inspect the floor plan to make sure it was right. Once she was sure that it was, and that the kiosk functioned like her statue, she put them on the mezzanine floor of every third building, so that workers could simply walk over after their shift and turn in quests.

Simple, safe, and efficient.

And, they didn’t have to wear out the grass beside the hall of heroes anymore.

Now, she just needed to send a message so they all knew.
