On the seventh day after the start of the Third Trial, midnight brought them the message that everyone had been waiting for.

{Congratulations Heroes, on making it through the first week of the Third Trial. As promised, there is a reward for you!

Territories will be assessed at noon today, and a bonus reward will be issued based on your halftime performance. You all have been working hard, and you deserve something special to help you make it through the second half of the trial.

"I swear to fuck, if that System Admin uses one more happy emoji for things that are going to try to kill me," Reggie began as the message came through.

He was sitting in the main floor lounge of the dorm building with his team and a few others, ready to run out to the walls the moment that there was any hint of danger. But instead, they got the super happy version of the System, informing them that there was going to be a reward at noon, and then an increased difficulty second half of the trial beginning the day after.

Couldn’t it just tell them that the trials were over already, that they had won and there weren’t going to be any more insane monster waves coming for them?

He was definitely beginning to understand the novels that wrote about country living and white picket fences. The thought of a quiet and easy life was especially tempting now that he had seen the alternative that wasn’t the corporate rat race.

Kalli stepped out of her room and joined the heroes in the lounge.

"Good news, everyone, another day without a fight. Today after the sun comes up, we will push the patrol lines further out, using the same patrol groups of an APC and two assault speeders.

I don’t know what we’re going to find, but I suspect that there are wild monsters not associated with the waves, so we need to keep our eyes peeled, and everyone’s weapons at the ready, but not too twitchy.

There might be heroes on the move, taking advantage of the rest day to try to relocate somewhere safer than they were.

If you see anything that looks like it might be human, don’t shoot. Make sure it’s not a friendly first, and if necessary, bring them back. We’ve got radios, and we can send more vehicles to make a rescue attempt if it’s a large group.

There is a glacier tour bus in the store, with wide flotation tires on it for driving over snow. That will do well enough in soft ash and sand, and it can be packed with people for the trip.

Just make sure that you get a good enough patrol route finished before noon that the System will consider awarding us for control of the territory, and keep yourselves safe.

If you run into trouble, call for backup.

If you have vehicle trouble, let us know immediately. We will make sure all the heroes are back in the city before nightfall, even if we have to leave a vehicle behind and collect it later."

"Got it boss lady!"

Yara smacked Reggie on the back of the head, but the warrior just shrugged. Boss Lady was a perfectly good title for Kalli, as far as he was concerned.

After all, who would dare cross her?

There were plenty of brave men and women in the city of Marimgar, but not a single one that was willing to make an enemy of Kallista De Marimgar. They didn’t even consider that it likely wasn’t her real name, as it was just the Academy’s code name for students who didn’t want to make their identity public.

They had simply accepted that the transfer student who had received the strangest class of all was an enigma that they were never meant to solve.

"Do we have to wait for dawn? We could start sending teams now." One of the warriors asked.

"It’s better to wait for dawn. We can send patrols for the immediate area in the dark, as we already know it. But I don’t want anyone out in unknown territory, risking ambush by roaming monsters in the dark.

Getting into unnecessary fights on the rest day while the System assesses us doesn’t seem like a great idea."

"Got it. We’ve already got patrols in the local area scheduled, they just pulled back before midnight so that they were not trapped outside the walls if the System decided to spice things up with a surprise attack."

Kalli laughed. "At this point, we might as well make that part of Marimgar Law. Nobody outside the walls at midnight."

Yara smiled. "You know that actually makes sense. We haven’t made any official new laws for this new situation, only informal ones that are enforced by consensus. But we can start making proper written laws, to remind people that there are standards that should not be messed with.

No going outside the walls at midnight is common-sense enough that it’s a perfect spot to start.

Everyone understands why it’s necessary, and nobody was going to do it anyhow. So, when it becomes the first of the new laws, it will set a precedent without causing people to feel like they’re being unnecessarily restricted."

"Exactly, put it in writing so that there are no doubts about what the rule is, but make sure that it’s clearly for the common good and public safety. Nobody wants to be known as the micromanager or a wannabe dictator in the middle of the apocalypse," Kalli agreed.

The heroes nodded in agreement, and Temple winked at Kalli before speaking in a joking tone.

"You can put it up in the Hall of Heroes later. It will go well with the quest board and the other reminders that are up on the screens already.

At this point, I’m expecting to start seeing all sorts of common-sense regulations popping up on signs. All we need is a tavern with a ’Please check your guns with the bartender’ sign at the door."
