Reincarnated As The Heroes Guide

Kalli raced through the streets, punching single shots from the Pulse Cannon into the small monsters everywhere that she saw them, and watching for signs of forced entry into the buildings so that she could report breaches to the defenders.

There was fighting in the streets at dozens of buildings, with the level 0 residents wielding shotguns, blades, and flamethrowers, weapons passed out to fight Goblins, or inherited from the heroes who no longer needed them.

This fight certainly wouldn’t end with zero casualties, Kalli was certain, but the monsters were falling fast, with thousands of laser shots firing every few seconds, as the buildings attempted to purge the intruders who would attack humans within the city limits.

The only limitation was that the enemy had to be in the streets, so the residents had to fight them away from the main floor doors and windows, to keep them from infiltrating the towers.

The stairwell doors were solid steel, and the buildings themselves reinforced concrete with thick alloy pillars.

But the lower floors were intended to be open for shopping and commercial use, and the insectoid monsters could move freely through them, spreading to other towers if they got into even one.

That would lead to a lingering issue, as they would need to do a full sweep of the city to find them all.

And that would be even worse.

However, the heroes at the walls couldn’t afford to come in to help.

The creatures were insanely fast, and they were already at the walls, in close combat with the heroes.

Not even the river had slowed their advance.

However, the heavy guns on the rooftops had torn through the waves, eliminating all the behemoths that came into view, as well as huge portions of the advancing force.

But that still left tens of thousands of enemies to crash into and scramble up the walls.

The front lines of the battle were hell, pure hell, but the lines were holding, with the heavy weapons and the healers combining to keep the warriors from being overrun before the ranged damage dealers could get the last of the enemies off them

That was all that the warriors could do, though.

Claws and armoured legs slammed into shields, blades tore through chitin, and skills split alien monsters apart. But with every passing minute, the tide at the wall got thicker.

They were too close to the heroes for the big guns to be effective, and the pulse cannons simply couldn’t tear through them as fast as they were reaching the walls. The heroes working the heavy guns had mana limitations, and the guns were thirsty.

They couldn’t just abandon the walls, though.

Sure, they could retreat, and give up the automated turrets, but once they started backing away from the walls, they began putting the buildings in range of the enemy.

The creatures could leap a dozen metres in a single bound, enough to get on top of the wall, and if they had the high ground, they might jump entirely over the warriors into the back lines.

Clearly that would be a disaster, as the mages and others behind the front line were not equipped for close combat with a creature like this.

But more than that, it would let the larger creatures into the city.

The lasers were doing well enough on the small ones that had spawned within the perimeter, but even a Pulse Cannon didn’t always bring down these larger ones in a single shot.

The system hadn’t been joking about the difficulty being adjusted for the second half.

The enemies now were on a level where there were very few of them being one hit killed by anything short of artillery, and the heroes were being forced into drawn out fights with no prospect of recovery.

And the wave just kept coming.

For the rest of humanity, this was a perfectly normal situation. They couldn’t hold off the monsters forever, and they would eventually be forced into a fight and relocate style battle. However, for the people of Marimgar, it was a new situation.

They had such strong defences that they were able to completely hold the walls with no breaches during the previous battles.

Then, Kalli got an idea.

"{Instead of targeting groups, all air defence weapons need to aim three hundred metres from the walls and overlap fire. Create a constant barrage, blast that ring of earth until the monsters inside are wiped out.}" She instructed over the radio.

That seemed a bit crazy to the gunners, but they did it anyhow, and Kalli found that her math somewhat worked.

The coverage wasn’t perfect, there were some gaps between the blasts. But it was close enough that fewer than one in a hundred of the insectoid monsters were making it past the barrage.

Some were trying to rush through between shots, but they were too close together, and the weight of the forces behind them was pushing them forward.

They couldn’t wait for the attack to falter.

[ That’s better, we’ve bought some time for the front lines. If we can just keep this up, we might stand a chance of holding out until noon. But I need to know what the rest of the wave looks like. ] Kalli thought, not noticing how her hands shook as she swept the area looking for more enemies.

A short flight back to the Hall of Heroes brought her back to her satellite feeds and the computer screens showing the situation around the base.

It also revealed that her robotic helper was much more stingy with the ammunition than she had intended. It kept asking the runners what group the cases were for. That would need to change, or she would take the task over herself to save time.

The robot was the least of her worries.

The satellite feed showed exactly what Kalli had been hoping would not be true. For thirty kilometres every direction inland of the city, there were more of the insectoid monsters coming.

The back line was contracting as they charged the city, so Kalli guessed that it had likely been the whole fifty kilometres that they had to clear for a perfect victory when the battle started.

But the feed also showed that the enormous insects that they had faced so far were not the worst of them.

There were massive centipede-like ones in the back ranks, and they appeared to be covered in armour.
