Reincarnated As The Heroes Guide

Chapter 224: A Truly Valued Existence

There were a few shocks to the day.

First, one of the level 0 residents of the city actually managed to get the {Hero of Marimgar} quest for a thousand kills completed. The completion immediately made him a level 1 marksman.

And caused him to pass out from excitement.

"Someone put him on a bed upstairs, and leave this gear with him. Now that he’s a hero, he gets the uniform armoured bodysuit."

Kalli’s joking tone, made the heroes smile as the man was slung over a shoulder and carried upstairs.

The weight of an unconscious hero was not a major impediment to a high-level hero, it was more a matter of being careful not to bash his head against the walls when you turned a corner.

He should wake up soon, anyhow.

He was far from the only one that made level 1 that day. Just the most dramatic advancement. Many of their runners had advanced during the battle, after picking a skill.

With the Epic Grade quest rewards giving the heroes ten points each, every time a level zero resident completed one, there was a good chance that they would end up with enough points and experience to pick a skill.

Just working didn’t always unlock a skill other than a life skill.

But if you got a kill quest completion, you could unlock a combat class. That was what most of them were hoping for, not for the trade skill classes that would be the most versatile inside the city.

Even if they were technically heroes, they were still workers, and it was only natural that people dreamed of being the one to save their new hometown.

"Coordinator, I got something good!" A burly middle-aged woman shouted as she ran into the hall of heroes.

"I’m always open to good news. What’ve we got?"

"I got a skill and a class! I got the [Bare Pantry] skill that lets me season food with magic, and became a real Chef."

Kalli laughed as she ran out from behind the counter and hugged the woman.

"You, my new friend, are about to become very popular here in Marimgar. I’ve seen many skills, but seasoning food with magic is definitely a unique one."

The woman thumped herself on the chest. "I mastered that skill ages ago, it’s good to know that the System thinks Nana was magical. I’ve been working in the clothing shop, but it gave me a cooking skill, so I thought that I should ask for a transfer.

It’s easier to go through you, and I don’t want to open another food stand when we’ve already got so many."

Kalli smiled. "I have a better spot for you. There are hundreds of heroes in the Academy dorms who eat almost all their meals at the Academy cafeteria. I will send you over to Gerry with a note, and he will take you in.

I don’t know how you feel about working in a buffet style kitchen, but they will definitely benefit from your skills, and you’ll keep countless other heroes fed.

There are also rewards for it.

You will be able to fight more effectively, of course. But you get experience for using your skills, and a chef uses them all day long."

The woman smiled down at Kalli, and gladly accepted the warm welcome from all the heroes in line who lived near or in the Academy, and would be regularly sampling her work. It was an instant reminder that she was someone important now.

Not because she did something huge and dramatic, but because she could feed a hungry hero.

"You know, before all this, I was a line cook at a truck stop diner. I don’t know if that’s going to take me far in a gourmet kitchen like the Marimgar Academy cafeteria. But my son went to school here on scholarship, and he still likes my food."

The heroes smiled, but nobody dared to ruin the moment by asking who her son was.

If he wasn’t here it would be possibly the most insensitive thing that they could ask at this moment. But even after a lifetime of fine dining, many of the students at Marimgar Academy still liked to sneak out for a nice greasy cheeseburger now and then.

That sort of cooking wouldn’t upset anyone.

The process of clearing the city continued until noon, when a System notification startled everyone.

{Recalculating City Capabilities.}

"Fucking seriously?" Reggie whined, while Yara laughed.

"Maybe it’ll be nice to us this time. We did well on this wave, so it might give us a break next time. I tell you, after all this, the fourth trial is definitely going to be something weird. It’s tested our ability to defend against basically everything on the planet at this point.

The fourth is going to flex on us in some way we never prepared for, and we’ll all feel silly for spending all our points on combat buffs.

Well, maybe not you, but that’s because you’re an idiot, and beating giant insects with a club is what you were born for."

Reggie sighed as the other heroes laughed at his expense.

That vicious woman always knew just what spot to hit for maximum effect.

"Damn you all, you weren’t complaining about my intelligence when I stopped those bugs from getting around our flank an hour ago."

That just made his group laugh harder, as it confirmed Yara’s position that he really was best at the role of meat shield warrior. Even Kalli couldn’t argue with that. Reggie had absolutely zero luck, possibly even a negative modifier on the stat. But he was an excellent tank, and he routinely did better than the other power armour wearing tanks.

{City Capabilities Calculated: Next Wave Adjusted}

Kalli was not the only one that sighed when they saw the message. But the others all turned to her immediately after.

"Alright, let’s check the cameras. If the corpses vanished, I’ll do the wall now. If not, I will wait until we’ve moved some more of them. The more supplies that we can get from them, the better. It sounds like the next enemy is determined based on what we have now.

Notice that it didn’t give us any flying enemies today?

We’ve got so much air defence that even the System didn’t dare. I think that might be the key, it’s adjusting to what we’re prepared to fight against. So I will tweak our defences this time, and hope that it’s in the right direction for whatever comes next," she explained.

"In Kalli we trust. Do your thing, Boss Lady."
