Upon arriving back at the base, Yuki explicitly instructed everyone that there would be no interrogations and that they were all going to eat in peace. However, things did not go according to his plan.

Nyquella and Malakai did not get along at all.

"And that’s why, as you can clearly see, he is nothing but an old piece of cow shit," Nyquella sneered, crossing her arms.

"You talk a lot of smack for someone hiding behind Yuki," Malakai retorted, flashing her a mischievous, mocking smile. "Why don’t you step out from behind him so I can quiet you down permanently?"

"... No."

"Okay, okay, what is actually happening with you two?" Yuki interrupted, looking entirely confused. "You’re from the same race... well, you were, anyway. This feud happened decades ago, and there aren’t many of you left. Don’t you think trying to kill each other is a terrible idea?"

"I will never work with that asshole," Nyquella spat, glaring at Malakai.

Malakai turned his back to her, his expression hardening as his mind was made up. "Yuki, let me dispose of her. She is of no use to us. Once a traitor, always a traitor."

"Traitor?! I am not a traitor!" Nyquella shouted, slamming her hand down hard on the table. "I did what I had to do to live! But instead of joining us and being free, the rest of you old dipshits decided to hide the research! Didn’t you literally run off with that human to find a solution, only to fail miserably?!"

Hearing those words, Malakai’s confident smile completely wavered.

"We found a solution, and we thrived after gaining our freedom—unlike you," Malakai said, his golden eyes narrowing dangerously. "You committed yourself to a cursed, forbidden ritual and disrespected your own bodies. That was the price of your supposed freedom."

"Who cares?!" she barked, gritting her teeth. "There are only twelve of us left anyway. Well, eight of you, since four of us actually performed the ritual. But you wouldn’t know anything about that, because you decided to run away, hide behind that little facade of yours, and now you’re pretending to be someone who actually cared."

Malakai froze. "...Who are the other three?"

"Why on earth would I tell you?"

"Nyquella—" Malakai’s voice dropped to a deadly whisper. "If you think hiding behind Yuki will save you, think again. I will slit your throat and end your worthless existence this very instant. Do not play games with me."

"Oh, so now you don’t like games? From what I can see, you and—"

"Don’t do that," Yuki interrupted firmly. His long, armored tail rose up behind Nyquella, pressing its sharp tip lightly against her neck. "Nyquella, it’s best that you just tell us what you know."

Nyquella gasped, looking up at him in betrayal. "I thought you were going to help me?!"

"No, I said I would like you to join me," Yuki corrected calmly. "However, you’re making things very difficult right now. So, tell us everything... now."

Nyquella clicked her tongue in frustration, looking away. "Tsk. Fine. The other three are Vyke the Golden Blade, Nixx the Silver Fox, and... Asterion."

The moment she uttered the last name, The fake Malakai’s face grew incredibly dark. "He is still alive?"

"Yes," Nyquella said, avoiding his intense gaze.

"Who is Asterion?" Camilla asked, playing her part perfectly before shifting uncomfortably as she felt the suffocating tension fill the room.

"He is a monster," Malakai said flatly. "He was a master mage and a researcher, but he was always cold and utterly inhumane. He would do anything—and eliminate anyone—who got in the way of his work. Forty percent of the entire shadow spawn population died just trying to stop him."

"If a man like that is still alive, then we have a really serious problem," Camilla muttered, her brow furrowing.

"Not really," Nyquella interrupted, cutting Malakai off. "He also performed the body-transfer ritual, so he hasn’t reached Rank 1 yet."

"Does that mean you can track him down?" Camilla asked.

"Yes... but it’s completely pointless," Nyquella replied, a shiver running through her. "He is practically invisible. His passive abilities are Distortion Field and Spatial Rend. He can slice through absolutely anything, and nothing can hit him. Even if we all went after him together, nothing we do would work."

"There has to be some kind of weakness, right?" Vee asked nervously from the corner.

"No, there isn’t," Nyquella said flatly. "We can only temporarily disable his barrier by overloading it with physical attacks, and we have to counter his offensive attacks with magic."

"We can bind his power directly to his physical body. That would stop him from slicing us in half," Malakai stated bluntly.

Nyquella raised an eyebrow in skepticism. "Do you honestly think that will work?"

"Maybe."

"We at least have to try," Camilla said bitterly. "If he still holds a grudge against Malakai, he will eventually come for him, and we will be caught right in the crossfire."

"Well, it won’t be easy. The guy has a terrifying reputation," Nyquella chuckled, her body visibly shivering. "I mean, look at his titles. I only have one, and every other legendary shadow spawn only has one. He has five."

"Five?!" Yuki blurted out, his eyes widening.

"Asterion the Void King. Asterion the Broken Sin. Asterion the Unholy. Asterion the Blasphemous King. Asterion the Fractured Star," Malakai listed them off, his dark aura flaring up involuntarily at the sheer mention of the names.

Yuki tapped his fingers nervously against the wooden table. "...Okay, I changed my mind. We don’t stand a ghost of a chance against him. ’Asterion the Unholy’? That is a name you give to a literal Demon King."

"We don’t have a choice. It’s either him or us," Malakai countered. "And he doesn’t care if you’re a man, a woman, or a child."

The room plunged into a dead, suffocating silence as everyone realized the absolute gravity of the situation.

"Let’s focus on getting to Rank 1 first, and then we’ll deal with him," Yuki finally sighed, breaking the quiet. "First things first, we need to kill the city core and leave this place. So for now, Nyquella, Malakai, bury your past and work together. Alright?"

"Fine... if that’s what it takes," Nyquella mumbled under her breath.

Malakai didn’t offer a verbal answer. He simply turned around and walked out of the room.

After the heavy conversation, the group separated. Camilla and Malakai stepped outside, heading down the street toward the black steel knights to check their perimeter. Under Yuki’s orders, Vee went back into her room to rest.

Nyquella and Yuki sat in the armchairs outside the house, enveloped in a long, heavy silence before Yuki finally spoke.

"I’m sorry for the way I treated you inside," Yuki said softly. "I needed to look tough in front of the others to keep you alive."

Nyquella looked up, her expression softening. "It’s alright. I should have just apologized like you told me to, but I was just so angry... I completely forgot myself and got caught up in my emotions again. I apologize."

Yuki gave her a sharp, warm smile. "Well, it’s official now. Welcome to the team. I know we started off on a bad foot, but I hope moving forward things can get better—"

Snap... BANG!

In a split second, a wicked black shadow blade plummeted from the darkness, slamming directly into Yuki’s chest. The kinetic force ripped a massive hole straight through his torso, throwing him backward and smashing through the house’s outer wall.

Nyquella froze, her heart hammering violently against her chest. "Yuki...?" she whispered, her voice trembling with sudden terror.

She slowly made her way over to where he had landed, but there was barely anything left. His lower half had been completely torn apart by the brutal impact, and his upper body was mangled beyond recognition.

"Yuki!" she cried out, tears spilling over as she looked down at his ruined body. She fell to her knees beside his head, looking desperately for any sign of life, but there was no conceivable way to save him.

Hearing the massive explosion, Camilla and Malakai ran back instantly.

"What happened?!" Vee screamed, rushing out of her bedroom. The moment her eyes locked onto Yuki’s unmoving corpse, she let out a heartbroken wail, breaking down into hysterical sobs as she hugged what was left of his body.

"Why did you kill him?! Why?!" Nyquella shrieked, her hands shaking violently as her orange eyes flared with tearful rage.

"What are you talking about?!" Camilla asked, completely thrown off.

"He killed him! Yuki died from a shadow blade! Who else in this place has shadow sorcery besides him?!" she screamed, pointing a trembling finger directly at Malakai.

"How could it be Malakai?! I was standing right next to him the entire time!" Camilla defended.

"Fucking liar! Your pet is a goddamn killer!" Nyquella roared. She manifested a brilliant arrow out of pure light and rushed blindly at Malakai.

Malakai didn’t even blink. He simply waved his hand, sending a heavy shadow tentacle whipping through the air. It struck Nyquella squarely, flinging her violently across the room. Before he could follow up with a lethal blow, Camilla swiftly deployed her crimson barrier magic, shielding Nyquella’s fallen form from the next attack.

"What are you doing, Malakai—"

BANG!

Another massive black arrow tore through the ceiling of the house. It ripped straight through Vee’s body and completely obliterated the remaining pieces of Yuki’s corpse in a violent spray of splinters and dark energy.

In absolute shock and desperation, Nyquella summoned her golden knight, sending the construct charging directly at Malakai. In the very next second, three more massive shadow arrows slammed into the structure of the home, completely dismantling the building.

The heavy roof and stone walls came crashing down around them. Using her barrier magic, Camilla expanded a crimson dome, protecting everyone from the falling debris. She quickly cleared a pathway through the suffocating dust, grabbed the weakened Nyquella, and hoisted her onto her back.

Malakai turned toward the open street, unleashing a massive wall of shadows. The exact moment the wall solidified, six consecutive shadow arrows slammed into it, the violent shockwaves kicking up a massive storm of dust and debris.

"Run," Malakai said bluntly over his shoulder.

Not wasting a single syllable, Camilla spun around and ran as fast as she could. Behind her, more thunderous explosions went off, sending shattered black bricks flying through the air.

Malakai’s eyes narrowed into slits. He limited his sensory perception strictly to the zone in front of him, actively scanning the dark perimeter for the hidden attacker.

Ding.

His refined senses picked up a distinct, heavy mass moving at incredible, superhuman speed. The next moment, a dark shadow warped directly behind him, materializing into a solid physical form. A massive black odachi cut through the air, flying straight toward his face.

CLANG!!

Malakai was shoved backward by the sheer weight of the strike, his boots digging deep grooves into the ruined stone street. He managed to slow his momentum, looking up at the attacker while holding his own shadow odachi in a rigid defensive guard.

The enemy chuckled sheepishly, adjusting his grip on his blade. "You’re an ugly man... it’s honestly like looking into a cursed mirror."

Malakai let out a dark chuckle of his own, his red eyes locking onto the identical facial features of the person standing before him.

"Well, hell... I didn’t think you would make it back here so fast. How was your little fight against the city core... Malakai? Or should I call you the Prince of Shadows?"
