Adam continued on his way to the Tower of Mages.

As he walked, the fatigue accumulated during the day became increasingly difficult to ignore.

Training with Selene had exhausted his legs.

Elaria’s forge had finished off his arms.

The two hours spent with Shiora hadn’t really tired his body, but his mind had had to remain focused almost continuously.

And all the while...

His mana compression had remained active.

Adam could still feel this unusual density flowing through his body.

Maintaining this state used to require constant attention.

Now, he could walk.

Talk.

Think.

Work.

And even fight for a while without the compression immediately collapsing.

It wasn’t perfect.

But it had become a true background function.

A few minutes later, the imposing silhouette of the Tower of the Mages loomed before him.

Adam entered.

The receptionist recognized him immediately.

"Good evening, Mr. Adam."

"Good evening."

She briefly observed his condition.

Then her gaze drifted down to the bracelets he still wore.

Adam noticed his expression.

"Yes. It’s been a long day."

The receptionist visibly suppressed a smile.

"I didn’t say anything."

"Your face did."

He continued on his way.

After using the space elevator, with the usual protest from his stomach, Adam finally reached the floor reserved for Vespera.

He walked down the corridor.

Then he stopped in front of his door.

His hand went up.

And remained still.

Adam looked at the doorknob.

He thought of Elaria.

You don’t need to knock anymore.

Then to Shiora.

Next time, just come in.

He remained silent.

"No..."

Vespera was different.

Not in their relationship.

He knew that perfectly well.

But in her everyday demeanor...

Aside from Isadora when she truly embraced her role as duchess, Vespera was probably the one who naturally exuded the most stern aura in the group.

Calm.

Upright.

Precise.

Rarely expressive.

The kind of woman in front of whom a student might spontaneously check his homework three times before entering.

Adam looked at the door again.

Then he knocked.

Knock.

Knock.

"Come in."

He opened the door.

Vespera was sitting behind her desk.

Several scrolls were spread out before her.

Ancient runes floated above a dark crystal.

Next to them were several sealed messages.

Probably answers concerning the ancient weapons she wanted to summon.

When Adam entered, she looked up.

"Good evening."

"Good evening."

He closed the door.

Vespera looked at him.

Then her gaze fell on the door.

Adam immediately sensed something was coming.

"You knocked."

He remained perfectly still.

Silence.

Vespera waited.

Adam slowly ran a hand over his face.

"No."

She tilted her head slightly.

"No?"

"Elaria told me."

Vespera didn’t reply.

"Then Shiora told me."

Still nothing.

Adam pointed at her.

"And now you."

"I don’t see the problem."

"There isn’t one. That’s precisely what’s strange."

Vespera put down her pen.

"You no longer need to knock before entering my office."

Adam closed his eyes.

"There. Exactly the same thing."

A very slight smile appeared on the dragon’s lips.

"Our relationship isn’t the same as it used to be. Why maintain a formality that’s become pointless?"

Adam looked at her.

Obviously.

Said like that...

It seemed perfectly natural.

And he realized, above all, that his hesitation stemmed more from the image he still had of Vespera than from their actual relationship.

The woman before him was no longer just the stern mistress of the Tower of Mages in charge of his training.

Vespera was his companion.

Adam relaxed his shoulders slightly.

"Okay."

He approached.

"Next time, I’ll go straight in."

"Good."

Adam reached the desk.

Vespera was clearly waiting for him to ask what they would be studying today.

But Adam didn’t.

He simply leaned towards her.

Then he placed a kiss on her cheek.

Vespera froze.

Her eyes widened ever so slightly.

Adam straightened up.

For a second, he almost wanted to laugh.

Because he had actually just surprised Vespera.

The dragon slowly looked at him.

"That was unexpected."

Adam smiled.

"That’s what Elaria said."

"You did the same thing with her?"

"And with Shiora."

Vespera remained silent for a second.

Then her expression became perfectly calm again.

"I see."

Adam raised an eyebrow.

"That’s it?"

"What do you want me to say?"

"I don’t know." "

He thought for a moment.

"Elaria blushed."

"I’m not Elaria."

"Shiora was teasing me."

"I’m not Shiora either."

Adam smiled more broadly.

"So you were surprised."

Vespera stood up.

"We need to train."

Adam burst out laughing.

"Very subtle."

She walked past him.

"Training room."

"Change of subject confirmed."

Vespera didn’t reply.

But Adam noticed a very faint color on the tips of her ears.

He wisely chose to say nothing.

A few minutes later, they arrived in the magical training room.

Adam now knew the place well.

The reinforced walls.

The protective circles.

The various targets.

The rune plates.

And, above all...

The empty space in the center where Vespera seemed constantly to find new ways to complicate her existence.

As soon as they entered, Vespera stopped.

Her gaze fell on Adam.

More precisely...

On his mana.

She remained silent for several seconds.

Adam waited.

Then asked:

"What?"

"Your compression is stable."

"Yes."

She continued her observation.

"Despite Selene."

"Yes."

"The forge."

"Yes."

"And two hours of work with Shiora."

Adam understood immediately.

"I have a feeling I’m going to regret this conversation."

Vespera raised a hand.

"Compress more."

Adam closed his eyes.

"There."

"You’re approaching the threshold."

This sentence made him open his eyes again.

"The threshold?"

"Yes."

Adam frowned.

"Wait. I thought there wasn’t really a maximum to mana compression."

Vespera thought for a few seconds.

"There’s no simple maximum."

"What does that mean?"

She conjured a small sphere of mana before them.

It was almost transparent.

"Think of uncompressed mana as a gas."

Adam observed the sphere.

Vespera slightly closed her fingers.

The mana concentrated.

The sphere shrank.

Its brilliance increased.

"When you increase its density enough, its behavior begins to resemble that of a liquid."

Adam nodded slowly.

"That’s more or less the state I’m in right now."

"Yes."

Vespera increased the compression even further.

The small sphere became much denser.

Its internal movements slowed.

"Then, this liquid gradually becomes more viscous."

Adam watched intently.

The mana no longer flowed as it had before.

It seemed almost thick.

Heavier.

Slower.

But still mobile.

"So the goal is to increase this viscosity?"

"Part of the goal."

"And then? Does it eventually solidify?"

"Not in your body."

The answer was immediate.

Vespera made the sphere disappear.

Then she created a second representation.

This time, a crystal appeared between her fingers.

"If extremely pure mana is trapped under sufficient pressure for a sufficient amount of time..."

The mana in the demonstration tightened.

Again.

And again.

Then a small crystalline fragment appeared.

Adam opened his eyes slightly.

"Mana crystal."

"Exactly."

Vespera spun it.

"This is one of the natural or artificial ways in which mana crystals can form."

Adam examined the small crystal.

"So they are literally concentrations of solidified mana."

"In broad terms, yes."

She immediately added:

"The reality is more complex. Purity, pressure, the elements present, the environment, and duration all influence the result."

Adam nodded.

"And that explains the different qualities of crystals."

"Exactly."

Vespera conjured several crystals.

One was pale.

Another was deep blue.

A third was almost transparent.

"Poor compression produces, at best, a low-quality crystal."

She pointed to the second.

"Much higher pressure, combined with greater purity, can create a significantly denser crystal."

Then the last one.

"And some extremely rare crystals require such precise conditions that they can almost never be intentionally reproduced."

Adam understood immediately.

"Hence their price."

"Yes."

She made the crystals disappear.

"The more usable energy a crystal can contain in a small volume while remaining stable, the higher its value generally becomes."

Adam looked at his hands.

"But if my mana actually reached that state in my body..."

"You’d have a huge problem."

He looked up.

"I like your way of simplifying." "

Vespera continued:

"Your mana must flow."

She gestured to her torso.

"Mana core. Circuits. Limbs. Organs. Spells. Enhancement. It all depends on movement."

She raised a finger.

"If your mana actually solidified in your circuits..."

Adam imagined the result.

Then he grimaced.

"Very bad."

"Extremely."

"So it remains liquid."

"Yes."

She continued:

"But a liquid can be more or less dense. More or less viscous. And above all..."

She stared at Adam.

"More or less pure."

He thought.

"Density. Viscosity. Purity."

"Three different parameters."

Adam nodded slowly.

It sounded strangely like what Elaria had explained to him a few hours earlier about metals.

A material didn’t simply have a single value.

Hardness.

Flexibility.

Strength.

Structure.

Several independent properties could determine its behavior.

Mana worked the same way.

"And where do I stand?"

Adam asked.

Vespera observed him.

For a long time.

Then he replied:

"In terms of viscosity..."

She paused.

"You’re not far behind me now."

Adam remained silent.

Then he blinked.

"What?"

Vespera remained perfectly serious.

"With the same amount of mana, the difference in density between yours and mine becomes small."

Adam looked at her.

"Wait."

He raised both hands.

"Are you telling me that my mana is almost as compressed as yours?"

"On that specific parameter, yes."

Adam remained silent.

He knew perfectly well what Vespera represented.

Her level.

Her experience.

Her age.

Her magical mastery.

Comparing his mana to hers seemed almost absurd.
