"Well, if all you wanted was to have a part of me inside you, dinner would’ve been a much cheaper first date. Being eaten alive isn’t exactly my idea of romance."

"You really are a fascinating being. Even in my current form, I can tell you’re still harboring an intense desire to ravage my body. Or is it that you simply don’t believe I can defeat you?"

"Oh." I scratched my head. "You can beat me, all right... especially if you use both hands."

I expected her to be annoyed by my green joke, but instead, the corners of her lips curled into a smile.

"Again, your desire for me rises whenever you say things like that. Could it be you’re the sort of being who would do anything, so long as it’s possible?"

I laughed and leveled my spear at her.

"I firmly believe in one saying," I said. "Where there’s a hole, there’s a way."

"What a strange saying. I’ve searched the minds of countless humans, yet I’ve never come across it."

"What can I say?" I shrugged. "I’m pretty good at making things up, especially when they sound lewd."

"I see. It seems it was my mistake to speak with you as though you were a civilized being. You may be strong, but you’re clearly lacking in the courtesy department."

"Thanks for the compliment."

SWOOSH!

She disappeared. The warning came a fraction too late.

Instinct threw my spear upward just as something struck it with enough ferocity to send a deafening clang.

BOOOOOM!

The impact launched me backward.

By the time I recovered, she had already grabbed my collar and taken off into the air, dragging me along with her.

"Wow, you’re really assertive, aren’t you?"

Dark Qi surged around my body to shield me, but even then, I could feel the crushing power behind our ascent, showing just how fast she was flying.

Only when we had climbed high enough for the battlefield below to become little more than scattered lights did she release me.

Momentum carried me into the open air, giving me just enough impact to kick her away and create some distance between us.

Then my instincts screamed.

She was already in attack mode.

I twisted in midair just as her claw swept toward my throat, barely managing to catch it on the shaft of my spear. The collision hurled me sideways like a cannonball, spinning end over end through the open sky.

Strangely...

It didn’t hurt nearly as much as it should have.

As I fought to steady myself, something shifted behind my shoulders.

I glanced back.

Black chitin had spread across my upper back, splitting apart as a pair of jagged wings forced their way free. They looked nothing like hers.

Where her wings possessed elegance, mine were crude and asymmetrical, more akin to weapons than limbs, each feather formed from overlapping blades of dark blades.

"...Huh."

I gave them an experimental beat.

They were different from my dragon wings, but I could still handle them.

That’s convenient. Apparently my body’s evolving without bothering to ask for my permission, too.

Far below, another change swept across the battlefield.

The invisible thread connecting the Hive to every one of its children vanished.

One by one, the aliens froze where they stood.

Some remained in the middle of swinging their claws.

Others halted mid-charge.

None of them moved again.

My soldiers looked up, their cheers reaching me even from hundreds of meters below. They all thought we had already won. What a bunch of idiots.

"Focus!" I shouted, my voice echoing across the battlefield like thunder. "The boss’s attention is on me! That means she’s not controlling the others anymore. They’re nothing but empty shells!"

For a heartbeat, everyone just stared.

"MOVE FUCKING IDIOTS!"

They all snapped at once.

My army surged forward as one, cutting down the motionless aliens before they could recover.

Above them, the Queen watched without the slightest concern.

If anything, she seemed pleased that the battlefield had been stripped of every distraction.

Her six violet eyes settled on me once more, and a smile slowly returned to her face.

"Now," she said softly, raising one claw as purple lightning coiled around her arm, "shall we continue?"

Before the last word had fully left her lips, she vanished, and I barely managed to bring my spear up in time before her next strike crashed into it.

BOOOM!

BOOOM!

BOOOM!

Her claw pressed against my spear, lightning crawling across the blade while Dark Qi surged around my body to keep me from being torn apart.

Then she smiled.

"You adapt quickly."

"That’s usually what happens when someone tries to kill me," I replied.

I pushed against her claw and twisted my spear, redirecting her attacks instead of trying to overpower it. Her body was heavier than anything I had fought before, but her movements were predictable.

It was probably because she wasn’t a combatant to begin with. Still, her sheer attributes were more than enough to compensate for that weakness.

However, my technique was far superior. Despite the gap in raw power, I was still able to keep up.

Not just keeping up.

The more we exchanged blows, the more I began to close the gap.

Then I stopped attacking.

One strike.

Two.

I focused entirely on dodging.

Her claws tore through the air again and again, but none of them managed to touch me. Her expression slowly changed, irritation replacing her earlier confidence as every attack missed by a fraction.

Then I caught her claw.

"Play time is over. I already read you like an open book."

BANG!

My fist slammed into her stomach, sending her flying backward.

I followed immediately, taking a deep breath as my spear filled with different elemental energies.

Then I unleashed a barrage of attacks.

Fire.

Lightning.

Wind.

One explosion followed another, the entire sky shaking as the battlefield below was drowned in the sound of continuous impacts.

"Time to end this once and for all!" I roared.

I drove my spear straight through her stomach.

"Moonlight Dragon..."

My spear trembled as dark lightning condensed around the blade.

"Lightning Strike Overload!"
