Left with no choice, Makoto issued a new order: "From now on, we'll hunt Gillians too."
The Teddy Devil and the others looked at each other in confusion.
The Gorilla Devil scratched his head and asked, "Boss, Gillians are meaningless to us, aren't they?"
Their main targets now were Adjuchas and Vasto Lorde. The soul mass of a Gillian was negligible to Hollows of their level, not even enough to fill the gaps between their teeth.
It was almost useless for leveling up and breaking through.
"They're not for you to eat."
Makoto shook his head, then turned to look at the silent figure at the back of the group. "Psykos— this is your chance to contribute to the team."
Psykos gulped, steeled herself, and stepped forward. "Please give your orders."
The first official task Makoto assigned to Psykos was to develop a Hogyoku.
This was the main reason he had kept her alive.
She might not be a once-in-a-millennium genius like Urahara Kisuke or Aizen, but Makoto estimated that her research talent was at least at Kurotsuchi Mayuri's level.
After all, being able to create Orochi— a fusion of Anomaly's cells, Hollow power, and Dragon Slayer magic— was no small feat. That creative ability was not something just anyone possessed.
From now on, whenever they encountered Adjuchas or Vasto Lorde, the group would devour them.
And whenever they encountered Gillians, they would hand them all over to Psykos as lab rats for developing the Hogyoku.
After all, these low-level Hollows were everywhere in Hueco Mundo. Using them as experimental materials wouldn't be a loss.
As for the morality of creating the Hogyoku, Makoto didn't even think about it.
In Makoto's view, among the Espada, everyone except Nel and Harribel could be killed without hesitation.
Yep, that's his double standard.
…
In Hueco Mundo, where it was always night, time was hard to perceive.
But in the Soul Society, where day and night were distinct, it was different.
The girls on the other side had already spent several years here.
The seasons had come and gone several times. The old thatched hut was now just a memory. They had now established a foothold outside the Seireitei.
One day, at the 5th Division barracks of the Gotei 13 in the Seireitei.
The afternoon sunlight streamed through the half-drawn bamboo blinds, casting dappled shadows on the floor.
Faint shouts of training drifted from the courtyard.
Aizen Sosuke, currently serving as the 5th Division's Lieutenant, pushed open the Captain's office door, carrying a stack of documents. He walked to the desk and reported to Hirako Shinji, who was lying sideways on the sofa picking his nose: "Captain, recently some very interesting refugees have appeared in the Rukongai..."
Shinji pulled his finger out of his nose, turned over lazily, his long blonde hair falling over the edge of the sofa.
"Oh? Tell me more."
Shinji's interest was piqued.
After all, not many people or things could catch his Lieutenant's attention.
Aizen sat at the desk, calmly handling the mountain of division paperwork, and reported to Shinji with a smile.
"Writers, manga artists, performers of song and dance, skilled chefs, and capable swordsmen who work as guards... and all of them, without exception, are women of remarkable beauty."
Admittedly, the dynamic between the two seemed quite harmonious at first glance.
It was a bit like the relationship between future Captain Hitsugaya Toshiro and Lieutenant Matsumoto Rangiku, except the roles were reversed.
At that time, in the 10th Division, the Lieutenant Rangiku slacked off everywhere, drinking and goofing around, while the Captain Toshiro handled all the work.
Now in the 5th Division, all the paperwork was handled by the Lieutenant Aizen Sosuke, while the Captain Shinji either lounged in the office or wandered around.
One might seriously suspect that Aizen got so annoyed by Shinji's slacking that he decided to target him first in the Hollowfication experiments.
In reality, Shinji had sensed from the very first time he met Aizen that this man was definitely not as kind and gentle as he appeared on the surface.
That was precisely why Shinji had deliberately promoted Aizen to his Lieutenant… to keep him under his watchful eye at all times.
After listening to Aizen's report, Shinji sat up from the sofa and teased in his usual flippant tone:
"Oho— Aizen, are you going through puberty too? Have you taken a liking to any of them? Want me to set you up?"
Aizen lightly adjusted his glasses, which reflected light and completely obscured his eyes beneath them, and chuckled, "You jest, Captain. I was merely thinking that it's rare for so many talented people to appear in the Rukongai all at once. I wonder how skilled those female swordsmen are. If they're capable, perhaps we could recruit them into the Shin'o Academy."
It had been many years since the Shin'o Academy actively recruited students.
After all, the number of Rukongai residents trying to change their fate by applying to the academy was always overwhelming. The sheer volume of applicants had already worn down the threshold.
To filter them out, the academy had even set tuition fees as a barrier, specifically to weed out the bottom-level wandering souls who couldn't even afford the fees.
And having the academy proactively send people to recruit… that had only happened a handful of times in the past century.
If the girls from the Nishikawa Family hadn't come, this wouldn't happen again until decades later when Toshiro arrived.
Shinji fell into silence.
"If Captain is busy, I can go instead." Aizen smiled, volunteering as always, his tone as gentle as ever.
Busy? With Aizen, this natural-born workhorse, around, Shinji was currently the most idle Captain in the entire Gotei 13.
Normally, Shinji would be more than happy to pile more work on Aizen, keeping him running around so he wouldn't have time to pull any tricks where he couldn't see. But this time—
"I've got nothing better to do anyway. I'll go take a look."
The main reason was that Shinji didn't trust Aizen.
If those women were really strong, he needed to keep them away from Aizen, to prevent Aizen from recruiting them for his own purposes.
After all, that guy was certainly good-looking enough to appeal to women, almost as handsome as himself.
Shinji stroked his chin, which he considered perfect.
But honestly, Shinji didn't think he was good at dealing with women.
Every time he dealt with Lieutenant of the 12th Division, Sarugaki Hiyori, she would beat him up in all sorts of creative ways.
If he went to negotiate with those mysterious women himself, he'd probably get thrown out before he could even finish his sentence.
After thinking it over, Shinji went to the 4th Division to visit Unohana Retsu.
The 4th Division's barracks were always the quietest place in the Seireitei. The corridors carried faint scents of herbs and disinfectant. Occasionally, low groans of injured patients came from the sickbeds.
Unohana was in her office, flipping through a medical book. Hearing footsteps, she looked up, wearing her signature gentle smile.
Shinji explained the situation, adding that he was really no good at dealing with women and asked Unohana to go talk to those mysterious women on his behalf.
She was a senior figure who had served as a Captain since the very founding of the Gotei 13, her seniority even surpassing Kyoraku Shunsui and Ukitake Jushiro.
In the current Gotei 13, apart from the Captain-Commander, no one outranked her in seniority.
If she couldn't be trusted, then no one in the entire Soul Society could.
Unohana put down her medical book, tapped her chin lightly with one finger, and pondered for a moment.
She had also heard about those women's deeds, including that several of them were skilled healers.
"Indeed, quite interesting."
Unohana Retsu nodded with a smile. "Then I'll accompany Captain Hirako on this trip."
