Rejected by My Alpha Mate; Nyra's Awakening
Chapter 105: When Will The Madness EndThe shrill sound of the fire alarm suddenly rings out loudly, cutting off their conversation.
Outside, the screaming of students can be heard from every inch of the building. They can’t make out anything until one girl screams from outside the door.
"The junior building is burning down!"
Nyra and Leah rush to open the restroom door, and just as the girl had said, there’s smoke everywhere.
Through the smoke, students can be seen running in every direction, some are screaming out names, trying to find their friends.
"Everyone get outside!" Mr. Philip yells. "Now! The north wing has gone down, the fire is spreading fast."
"What? What about Naya and Lena? They wanted to go practice in the north wing a few minutes ago."
"They’re okay." Leah responds, glancing at her phone. "They just texted me asking where I am and if I have seen you."
Shit. She turned her phone off and left it in her bag where they’d been eating. But now’s not the time to think about that...
She grabs Leah’s hand. "Come on, let’s go."
They sprint toward the main entrance with everyone else, but halfway there, Nyra suddenly hears a few students crying for help from the back of the buildings.
"Nyra, what are you doing?! We need to get out!"
Nyra turns toward the smoke-filled corridor. "Several students are still inside."
"Who?"
"I heard them screaming from our class. I think students are stuck there."
"The falling ceilings must’ve blocked them. Let’s just go. The fire team will get them out." Leah grabs Nyra’s arm.
Nyra could have easily run outside like the other students. She can already see the entrance from here...but this smoke could kill the other students before the fire team even reaches here.
Besides, what kind of future Luna would she be if she leaves her people behind!?
"Nyra! Let’s go!"
Leah grabs Nyra’s arm and forces her toward the front entrance, desperately trying to steer her around the falling poles and chunks of ceiling padding.
They finally make it outside, but the thick smoke is too much for Leah. She doubles over, coughing hard. She can hardly catch her breath.
"Go to the infirmary right now, Leah." Nyra tells her. "They need to have you checked."
"What about you-"
Nyra doesn’t let her finish before she sprints back into the burning building, while Leah screams her name to come back.
Inside, Nyra’s lungs burn as she runs through the smoke and broken doors. On the outside, she looks calm, but inside she’s panicking.
She tries reaching for her wolf again, especially since it has been unusually responsive today. She calls out to it, begging it to help save her classmates because she can’t protect anyone on her own.
"Please..." she whispers. "You said the Goddess has plans for me. That’s why she made me future Luna. What better plans than saving these people? Please help me."
"Nyra...if I do that now, I won’t be able to help you during the practicals."
"I don’t care." She mumbles. "I don’t care about the practicals. Their lives matter more right now."
The wolf lets out a long, tired sigh. "If you choose them, then I have no choice but to help them."
Nyra runs faster now that she knows the wolf is on her side. She ducks lower, remembering Mr. Jones from one of her classes telling them that if a building is burning, it’s better to breathe the lower air.
The deeper she goes into the building, the hotter it becomes, and the smoke is so thick that she can barely see her own hands.
Finally, she makes it to the door of her classroom, praying to God they’re still okay because the students have stopped screaming.
She tries to open the door, but the handle is too hot and burns her hand. "Ouch!" She cries, looking at the red skin.
This time she uses her shoulder to ram into the door. She knows her wolf helped because there’s no way the door opened the first time she tried it.
Inside, smoke has filled the classroom, but it hasn’t reached the middle yet. Thank goodness, she thinks, rushing to get classmates who are coughing on the ground.
One girl had almost passed out.
"I’m here, I’ll help you," she whispers, helping the girl up to rest on her shoulder. She sees one boy also sitting in the corner, he looks a little stronger than the others.
"Can you help me with that other girl? Don’t worry, I’ll lead you outside."
"I can try." He coughs and forces himself up, reaching for the other unconscious girl on the floor.
There are still two other students too weak to walk on their own, so Nyra tells them to lie down and wait for her to come back.
With her wolf guiding her, she sees through the thick smoke, leading the group slowly towards the entrance.
As they near the entrance, a ceiling fan sparks hard before dropping from its mount right in front of them.
"Shit!" Nyra gasps, managing to duck in time as more wood falls, but one of the poles scrapes her shoulder, leaving a deep wound.
The smoke is starting to get to her, and her eyes are stinging with tears, but she refuses to stop.
She finally gets them to the door, where the other students quickly grab her from her hand.
"Nyra, please don’t go back, you’ve done enough!" Lena and Naya plead from the other side, but Nyra shakes her head stubbornly.
"I promised those other students I’d come back."
That’s all she says before sprinting back into the burning building. This time, she’s not as lucky as before.
As she’s rushing back toward the classroom, the ceiling above her collapses, almost crashing into her.
Nyra jumps back as it hits the ground, shaking it, causing ashes and more smoke to fill the hallway.
She closes her eyes tightly, waiting for the dust to settle.
But when she opens them again, the path behind her and in front of her is completely blocked by broken windows, burning tables and fallen ceilings.
There’s no way forward, there’s no way backward.
She is completely trapped.
---
Adrian knows something is wrong before his car even reaches the academy gates.
But more than that, the thick smoke drifting into the sky is also evidence enough.
The moment the girls see his car, they run up to him, two of them are crying.
Lena looks up at him, tears flowing down her cheek. "Nyra is still in there! She’s inside the building. She refused to leave, she stayed to help the other students in the classrooms!"
Adrian can’t move. The fear grips his chest so hard that he bends over, gasping for breath. This is all his fault, running away like a coward. He should have just sucked it up and stayed in the mansion with her. He should have brought her to school himself today too.
"Why isn’t she here with you guys!?" He questions frustratedly. "You should have dragged her out with you!"
"She-she didn’t want to come back with us. She saved Leah, but she just ran back into the building despite all her pleading."
"We’re so sorry." Naya adds. "We should have been there with her, but we heard the fire has already escalated and they’re not letting anyone inside anymore!"
Adrian shoves his frustration down. It’s not any of their fault that Nyra keeps being so selfless to everyone around her, even if it gets her killed!
"Don’t worry, I’ll go in myself. They can’t stop me." Adrian rushes towards the junior building entrance. Just as the girl had said, the door is blocked.
There are some personnel trying to quench the fire, but they’re being too damn slow for Adrian’s liking.
Without looking at anyone else, he crashes through the barricade they set up, sprinting into the building without looking back.
The smoke inside is too much. He wonders how anyone would survive in this state. Then for a second, one traitorous thought enters his head.
What if Nyra is....
No, never. He shakes the thought away, using his Enigma vision to search through the smoke.
Adrian doesn’t care if anyone figures out his true abilities, all that matters now is finding Nyra.
Down the hallway, he sees a path completely blocked by broken windows, burning tables and fallen ceilings. But it looks like a group of students had managed to clear through the debris, making it easy for him to pass through it.
Damn, they must’ve been so damn strong to move all these things around.
Reaching the door, thankfully, he sees Nyra struggling to hold two students that have fainted. He doesn’t hesitate. He takes one from her hand, while she stares at him in shock.
"Adrian...? You came?"
"Now’s not the time." He responds, grabbing her hand with one hand. "Come, let’s go before this building totally collapses."
Nyra follows, barely keeping her footing. They barely make it past two steps when a heavy metal beam suddenly drops from the side and slams into Adrian, knocking him to the ground.
It lands right over his waist and legs, pinning him beneath its crushing weight.
"Adrian!"
Nyra drops the student she was supporting, rushing to his side. He grits his teeth, trying to push himself free, but the beam doesn’t move.
"Go," he orders, groaning from the burning metal and weight on his leg. "Just get them out, I’ll be fine."
But Nyra shakes her head, hand trembling at the blood seeping heavily from Adrian’s leg. The metal must’ve crushed something; the blood is far too much.
"I’m not leaving you, Adrian. Never!"
