The frown on Adrian’s face deepens into a scowl the moment he sees Dorian standing at his doorstep.

His chest rises and falls like he ran all the way there, and there are fresh bruises along his neck and chin.

Adrian’s eyes narrow. "What the hell are you doing here?"

Dorian holds the frame of the door, trying to catch his breath. Eventually, he looks up, eyes serious. "We need to talk."

"About what?" Adrian glances down the empty hallway. "And how the fuck did you find our address?"

"Please." Dorian pleads. "It’s very serious, I swear. Nyra might be in danger.."

There is something in Dorian’s voice that makes Adrian hesitate in kicking him away instantly. He stands there, shooting him an unimpressed look before he finally steps aside, allowing his cousin into the condo.

Dorian takes two steps inside before his nose wrinkles. His brow crinkles slightly. "That smells like...did you just-?"

"Shut it." Adrian’s expression darkens, making Dorian immediately shut his mouth.

Adrian folds his arms across his chest. "It’s fucking eight in the evening. What are you doing here?"

Dorian looks visibly uncomfortable, his eyes darting around the room as the unmistakable scent of Adrian and Nyra lingers in the air.

Eventually, he forces himself to sit, expression dead serious as he faces Adrian again. "You need to get Nyra out of here."

Adrian’s brows pull together. "What?"

"You need to leave Moon-Crest as soon as possible. Fuck the academy, fuck your duties. Run. Take Nyra and go somewhere far away. Somewhere they can’t find you."

Adrian stares at him as if he’s grown a second head. "What the hell are you talking about? And who the hell is ’they’?"

Dorian takes a shaky breath. "My father. He’s planning something."

Those words immediately wipe the irritation from Adrian’s face. He stands straighter as Dorian tells him everything.

Why exactly Caius returned to Moon-Crest. What his father had done in that small village, the way he made him search through the academy records.

Why they have been looking for a specific wolf.

And most importantly... how Nyra is the wolf they’d been hunting down for weeks.

Adrian doesn’t say a word.

He simply stands there, staring at Dorian, his mind struggling to process it.

They had been doing all of this under his family’s nose?

How did he and his father not notice how Caius had been snooping around behind their backs?

"How long?" Adrian finally asks.

Dorian swallows. "Since before we came back. The trail led us to Moon-Crest, that’s why we came."

Adrian’s jaw clenches. He wants to punch Dorian’s face in for doing this to them. He knew something was off, he knew...fuck!

His hands clench and unclench into fists. "Since you saw her in that monitor room...do they know who she is?"

"No, never." Dorian says with a shake of his head. "I would never turn Nyra in. But Adrian, it’s spiraled out of our control now. Those humans, they’re hunting Nyra with or without our help. We can’t stop this even if we wanted to."

For a moment, Nyx’s warning comes to his mind again. She knew something was wrong. She could sense it even when Nyra didn’t.

Adrian exhales slowly, masking his worry with a flat expression. "Don’t worry. We don’t need your help. You can leave now."

Dorian glares up at him. "Don’t fucking worry? Do you even understand what I just told you?"

Adrian feigns a shrug and a bored expression. "Nyra can handle them. You saw her in that simulation. There’s no way they can take her down."

Adrian doesn’t believe that. Not even for one second. He’s playing a game, pushing Dorian. He’s trying to see if there’s anything else he’s hiding.

Dorian takes the bait and scowls immediately. "She’s not fucking invincible, Adrian! What the hell is wrong with you?!"

Adrian’s eyes narrow. That wasn’t what he was expecting...

"Those people have been hunting creatures like her for years. They are so confident they can capture her and use her for their experiments. I risked my life coming here to tell you this, and you’re saying ’don’t worry’ like this is some fucking game?!"

"And when exactly should I believe you? Huh? I should just spring up and start running because you said so? You!?"

Dorian goes silent as Adrian continues.

"You’re a liar! You and your father have been lying to me for weeks. How do I know this isn’t some fucking trap?"

Dorian’s face folds in anger. "Because I’m betraying my own father for you! Do you think he would forgive me if he found out I told you this?!"

When Adrian doesn’t respond, he lets out a loud, frustrated sigh. "I’m just trying to do the right thing! I-"

"No, you’re not." Adrian cuts in coldly.

"Because if this were anyone but Nyra, you would’ve turned them in."

Dorian opens his mouth and closes it again. He can’t argue because he knows Adrian is right.

If Nyra hadn’t been the girl he’d grown attached to...

If she hadn’t been the person who smiled at him without knowing what his family was capable of...

Would he really have betrayed his father?

Adrian scoffs at him, running a hand through his hair. "Get out, Dorian."

"What?"

"If you don’t get out of my fucking house this instant, I’ll throw you out myself!"

Dorian slowly stands, but before he can reach the door, Adrian speaks again.

"And tell your father something for me. Do you know why you have the urge to submit to me? That’s because I am an Enigma."

Dorian’s face pales. He looks at Adrian in shock, like he can’t believe it.

Adrian releases his pheromones around him, and without a doubt, Dorian has the urge to instinctively recoil.

Adrian’s steps close, pheromones and warm breath pressing against his cousin. "So if Caius thinks he can threaten my mate." His claws slowly extend. "Tell him he better be prepared to deal with the both of us."

He slams the door shut against Dorian’s face.

Behind closed doors, Adrian’s act falls almost immediately. He rushes to his phone, hands shaking slightly.

"Dad?" He says into the speaker after his father picks up. "Dad, we have a big problem!"

---

Outside, Dorian is fuming.

Adrian just doesn’t understand what’s going on. Sure, they might both be powerful wolves, but they’re not immortal. No matter how strong Nyra is--or how dangerous Adrian’s Enigma might be--they can still be hurt.

He exhales loudly in frustration before heading toward the elevator.

If he can’t get through to Adrian, he’ll talk to Nyra instead. Maybe she’ll finally understand just how severe the situation is.

The elevator doors slide open, and Dorian steps inside.

.

.

By the time he leaves the building, it’s well over nine pm, and night has settled over the city.

The street is unusually quiet, with only the occasional cars passing under the dim streetlights.

Dorian walks with his hands shoved into his pockets, glancing over his shoulder from time to time. He can’t shake the feeling that he’s being watched.

A few minutes later, a huge, bulky man steps out from the corner. Something about him seems off, but his voice is nice enough.

"Excuse me, young man." Dorian slows, keeping his face blank. "Do you know where this address is?"

The man holds out his phone, but Dorian barely looks at it. "No. Sorry."

He starts walking again, but this time faster. The man seemed unusually off with the way he was staring at him the entire time. And more so, he didn’t have that usual, generic werewolf scent on him.

He’s about to cross the road to turn the other corner when a car suddenly slams to a stop directly in front of him.

Dorian freezes, backing away slowly as the passenger window slowly rolls down.

It’s the same man.

"Hey," the stranger says casually. "You want a ride? I’m going that way."

Dorian takes a step back. "No. Don’t worry."

"Come on. It’s late."

"I said it’s fucking fine!" Dorian hisses, getting irritated now.

The man’s smile disappears, his eyes turning a shade darker. "What if I said...your father sent us to pick you up?"

His father? That’s impossible. They had a big fight before he left the cabin. Besides, his father doesn’t know he’s here.

Unless he had him followed...?

He immediately reaches for his phone to call him, but before he can even unlock the screen, the car door flies open.

The man clamps his big hand over Dorian’s mouth, then pushes a syringe into the side of his neck.

His phone slips from his fingers, his limbs suddenly going weak and useless. He tries to struggle against the man’s hand, but his body feels like lead.

Two men come from behind and grab him too, dragging him toward the back of the vehicle.

The last thing Dorian sees before everything goes black is his phone lying cracked on the pavement.

Then the boot of the car slammed shut, leaving him trapped inside the darkness.
