Chapter 645 - 655: Probing, Revealing a Flaw (Part 1)Chapter 645: Chapter 655: Probing, Revealing a Flaw (Part 1)
Annabelle Linton called for Ashley Grant.
"Looking for me, sis?" Ashley Grant asked as she plopped down beside her. She grabbed an apple with one hand and started eating it, while flicking through channels with the remote in her other.
Annabelle Linton frowned and got straight to the point. "Ashley, what happened with Annabelle Ainsworth yesterday? Did you have something to do with it?"
Annabelle thought about it for a moment, and the whole story became clear. No wonder she’d heard Ashley’s cheers last night as she was dozing off in the car.
She had thought it was a dream.
’No, that’s not right,’ she thought. ’Leona Grant must have had a hand in this too. Ashley couldn’t have pulled it off on her own.’
"What are you talking about?"
Ashley froze for a second, took a bite of her apple, and then it clicked. She didn’t bother hiding anything. "You mean her getting lost and hurt? Oh, it wasn’t just ’related’ to me. I’m the one who did it. What about it?"
...
’So willful.’
Ashley then added, "Every injury she has right now is courtesy of me."
...
Hearing this, Annabelle’s frown deepened. "You’re not the type of person who treats others this way. From the day Annabelle Ainsworth walked through that door, I could tell you weren’t very friendly to her. I want to know why."
"There is no reason."
Ashley propped her feet on the coffee table and leaned lazily against the sofa. Her eyes were glued to the TV as she said nonchalantly, "No reason. I just hate her. We have no beef, no history. I just can’t stand the sight of her, so I wanted to teach her a lesson. That’s all."
"But there must be a reason why you can’t stand her, right?" Annabelle pressed.
Ashley glanced at her, raising an eyebrow coolly. "You really want to hear it?"
"I’m listening."
"Fine."
Ashley put down her apple, turned off the TV with the remote, and moved to sit face-to-face with Annabelle.
She looked at Annabelle and said coolly, "Since you want to hear it, let’s have a proper discussion about this."
Annabelle also coolly uttered three words: "Bring it on."
With the two of them positioned like opposing sides, it was the perfect setup to hash things out and get to the truth.
Ashley sat up straight. "Annabelle Ainsworth is your cousin. You should help her. Right. It’s only human; there’s nothing wrong with that. But the main issue is her connection to my brother, and the fact that they almost got married.
"My brother passed over so many women, only to marry someone who’d just returned to the country—someone he’d never even met before. Then they suddenly got together? Don’t you find that a little unbelievable?
"Is this woman that desperate to get married, that she’d marry herself off the moment she got back?"
Annabelle looked at Ashley and offered a reasonable explanation. "I don’t know about that. The day her mother came to the hospital, she said Annabelle Ainsworth has liked your brother for several years.
"As for them suddenly getting together, it’s possible she ran into your brother on the very day she returned. Your brother said she looks like me, so he wanted to marry her just to torture her. That’s probably the reason."
Ashley chuckled softly. "Fine, I’ll reluctantly accept that reason. Shall we continue?"
"Continue."
Ashley said, "Getting married isn’t something you decide after a brief chat, right?
"That means she and my brother must have already discussed the basics beforehand. So, if she’s really as sweet, sensible, and kind as she’s been acting these past two days—if she trusts you so much and can’t be away from you—then why was the first person she looked for after coming back my brother, and not you?"
