"..."
"Yeah, yeah, we can discuss it when we meet. Have your wife come along, too, so I can talk to her in person... Of course, it would be an incredible honor if I could hire her as my lawyer... Sounds good, I’m free whenever... Tomorrow? Sure, I’m definitely free. I’ll just come pick you both up..."
Annabelle was still chatting away, but Vivian, who was eavesdropping, turned pale.
’If I heard that right, Annabelle is actually planning to throw me in prison, to make me rot in jail for a few years!’
’That’s right, she wants me to serve a few years, but not something as merciful as death. She wants me to be endlessly tormented.’
’And not just that, she’s going to hand me over to someone for experiments... Leukemia?!’
’On top of that, she’s going to harvest my organs?!’
Vivian broke out in a cold sweat.
’Only after spending the last few days with Annabelle did I realize just how ruthless this woman could be!’
’I used to hate pretending to be Annabelle Ainsworth, but now... it seems like this identity has actually saved me!’
’What do I do? What do I do—’
Vivian felt like she was about to collapse. With Chase Lynch on one side and Annabelle on the other, she was trapped between a wolf and a tiger—completely cornered!
A cold glint flashed in her eyes.
’It looks like I have to destroy that video and recording!’
—
Annabelle had just hung up the phone when someone suddenly wrapped their arms around her from behind.
A commanding presence washed over her in an instant. Leona Grant leaned over, burying his face in the crook of her neck to inhale her pleasant scent. His other hand reached around her arm and deftly plucked the phone from her grasp.
He scrolled through her phone and asked lightly, "Can’t sleep? Who are you calling behind my back in the middle of the night?"
"..." ’What does he mean, "behind his back"?’
A phone is a private matter, and Annabelle didn’t like people prying into her personal business.
She reached for her phone, but Leona straightened up and raised his hand slightly, holding it just out of her reach.
Leona glanced at her call history, raising an eyebrow. "Simon Moss?"
Watching him scrutinize her phone, Annabelle was both amused and exasperated. "He’s a friend," she said with a sigh. "From Aridia. And he’s married."
Hearing that the man was married relieved Leona considerably, but he still grumbled, "You sure have a lot of male friends. And you just left me all alone in the middle of the night."
Glancing at the hand still wrapped around her waist, Annabelle didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
’It’s two in the morning here,’ she thought. ’I was on the phone with a friend from Aridia, where it’s daytime right now.’
She gazed at the shimmering surface of the water. A gust of wind sent ripples spreading in circles, distorting their swaying reflections. It was a beautiful sight.
Annabelle smiled and asked, "What woke you up?"
"You were on the phone for over twenty minutes."
Leona rested his chin on her shoulder, his hands roaming restlessly from her waist to her stomach, then up to her chest. He pecked her cheek and grumbled, "I woke up the moment you left the bed. I waited for you for twenty minutes... I can’t sleep without you..."
"You’re unbelievable..." ’He noticed the second I moved.’ She didn’t know what to say. "I’ll try not to get out of bed at night anymore."
Annabelle pulled out of his embrace and started walking toward the bedroom. "Come on, let’s get to sleep. I have work tomorrow."
Leona didn’t move.
After a few steps, Annabelle realized he was still standing in the same spot. She looked back at him, puzzled. "What is it?"
Leona didn’t say anything.
Annabelle saw the sullen look in his eyes and understood immediately.
"You get more childish every day."
