Repairing A Broken Home With My Patriarch System
Chapter 12: Quit DrinkingEthan headed to the bedroom, his expression calm.
’So she probably won’t believe it that I’m not really her husband, huh? Hmm...’
He paused at the door to his room when he saw Cole coming out of the guestroom.
"Good morning, brother-in-law."
Cole’s expression twitched, but he still replied. "Morning, Ethan. Where’s Evelyn?"
Ethan opened the door as he answered him. "She’s in the kitchen."
He left Cole alone and walked into the bedroom, seeing Nora still fast asleep.
Ethan crouched by the bedside, simply staring at her face. After a few seconds, he raised a hand and poked her cheeks.
The little girl’s brows furrowed slightly, but eased as soon as he pulled away.
Ethan didn’t stop, poking her cheek again. Nora frowned, and her eyes fluttered open.
It took a few seconds for her to truly wake up, and when she looked at him, there was confusion in her eyes.
"Daddy?"
Ethan offered her an awkward, goofy grin. "Rise and shine, sunshine!"
He immediately frowned and muttered, "Wait. Is that the right thing? I seem to have gotten it wrong."
Nora’s confusion deepened, and she continued staring at him with a frown.
Ethan eventually gave up on trying to find the correct words. He turned back to her and said, "It’s morning already. You should get prepared."
Nora nodded and got off the bed, wearing her slippers by the bedside. Ethan held her hand and led her out of the room, realizing that she wasn’t as distant and reserved as she had been yesterday.
’At least that’s an improvement.’
He turned to her and asked, "Do you want tea?"
Surprisingly, she shook her head. "No, not today."
"Oh, why?" He asked, curious.
"I just don’t want it today," Nora insisted.
Ethan could tell that she was hiding something, but didn’t try to force it out of her. He smiled and patted her head.
"Then you must want something else. Ice cream?"
Nora’s eyes narrowed. "Why would I want ice cream?"
Ethan felt like rolling his eyes. "Aren’t you a kid? Kids love sweet things like ice cream."
"Oh..." Nora seemed to have just realized this, which made Ethan feel deeply conflicted.
When they arrived at the living room, Evelyn was just seeing Cole out as he prepared to leave.
"Uncle, you’re leaving already?" Nora asked, seeing the man already carrying his bag.
Cole smiled and waved at her. "Bye bye, Nora. I have to go to work. See you later."
He gave Ethan a nod too before stepping out and closing the door behind him.
Nora immediately looked up at Ethan and asked, "Don’t you have work too?"
Evelyn froze, and so did Ethan. She immediately wanted to rush forward and shut the girl up. However, the words had already been said.
At the same time, a part of her wanted to see his reaction. Would he scold her like he used to, breaking the facade of kindness he had been creating since yesterday?
Ethan stared at Nora with a speechless expression, then laughed. "Of course, I have work. Wanna know?"
The girl nodded seriously.
Ethan leaned forward and pulled her cheeks teasingly. "Taking care of my family. Cool, right?"
Nora blinked, then thought about it seriously. Before she could give an answer, Evelyn cut in, not wanting to have the girl run her mouth as she pleased.
"Nora, time to take your bath."
Ethan released the little girl and let her mother take her away. Meanwhile, he returned to the room to get dressed.
Before eight o’clock in the morning, they all stepped out of the house and headed towards the market.
It wasn’t that far from their house—only a few minutes’ walk. As they walked down the streets, Ethan suddenly heard his name being called.
He turned around and spotted a young man coming toward him.
"Yo, Ethan. Didn’t see you at the bar yesterday, what’s up?"
The young man looked decent, but reeked of alcohol.
Ethan stared at him deeply, then said, "Richard, quit drinking."
"Eh?" Richard’s lips parted in surprise, and he looked confused.
Ethan didn’t linger. Holding both Evelyn’s and Nora’s hands, he continued walking toward the market.
Meanwhile, Richard remained confused. "What’s wrong with Ethan today? And why is he with his family? Man, the others are going to be surprised to hear this."
Smiling, he turned around and walked away.
Arriving at the shop, Ethan and Evelyn didn’t waste time. As soon as the delivery bus came in, they began unloading and arranging the fruits they’d purchased, with Ethan giving clear instructions.
"One basket of apples is enough. They’re not on high demand here, so don’t buy too many," He said to his wife.
Evelyn blinked in surprise, then nodded. "Alright."
Once the delivery bus drove away, Ethan and Evelyn immediately began selling. Their first customer approached. The same girl who had asked for Ethan’s number yesterday.
She looked even more embarrassed when she saw Evelyn, lowering her head.
Confused, Evelyn softened her tone as she spoke. "Hello, what would you like to buy?"
The girl couldn’t look her in the eye and hurriedly replied. "Just some bananas. A small bunch."
Evelyn nodded and packaged them before handing it to her.
Ethan watched with an amused smile as the girl walked away, reminiscing about his own high school days.
’Ah, I feel so old. This Ethan guy is 28, and I’m mentally 59. Does that make me 87?’
He scratched his head, then glanced around. He noticed that the other fruit stalls now had their own suggestion boards out, displaying ridiculously large discounts.
Ethan couldn’t hold back a laugh, attracting Evelyn’s attention.
"What happened?" She asked quietly.
He sneakily pointed at the suggestion board of the shop next to hers, prompting her to look.
Evelyn’s eyes widened. "What? 25% discount? Isn’t that too much?"
Why were they offering such a huge discount this early in the morning?
Ethan chuckled and answered her. "It’s simply because they want to copy our strategy from yesterday."
"What? That’s not right!" Evelyn pouted and clenched her fists, annoyed.
Ethan smiled and pinched her nose. The woman froze, but seeing that he didn’t harm her, she relaxed. She really looked cute when fuming.
"It’s fine. Let them use it. They’re going to make a loss, anyway."
Evelyn wrinkled her nose, then asked, "A loss? How?"
Ethan gave the shops a disapproving glance, then explained.
