James and Elena walked towards them with dark expressions.

"Where is Nora? What happened to her?" Elena asked them, a concerned look on her face.

Chris immediately went up to them and explained.

"The asthma again? It’s been years. Why would it suddenly come again?" James asked in confusion.

Ethan was also puzzled. He knew Nora had asthma, but never thought of it since it had only surfaced once ever since her birth. What could have caused it to happen again?

Regardless, the only option available now was to wait until the doctor came out while enduring James’s glare.

Thankfully, the wait wasn’t long. When the doctor came out, his expression was calm and reassuring.

"The patient’s parents?"

"That would be us," Ethan answered as he held Evelyn’s hand.

The doctor shifted his gaze to the couple and explained, "The attack was more severe than we initially expected. Although we managed to stabilize her, we’re keeping her under observation for at least a few days. She’ll need continuous monitoring, medication, and several tests to determine what triggered such a sudden relapse."

Evelyn’s expression tightened, while Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

"It wasn’t random?"

The doctor turned to him. "No, I don’t think it was random. Since she hasn’t had an episode in years, we don’t want to take any chances. We’ll need to run additional tests and keep her here until we’re certain her breathing has stabilized."

The young man nodded slowly, digesting the information.

Behind them, James walked over and asked, "What about the bills? Is the hospital doing all this for free?"

The doctor frowned slightly and shook his head. "It’s not free, and I’m afraid this won’t be a cheap stay. Given her condition, you should be prepared for a fairly substantial medical bill."

Chris immediately stepped forward. "How much would that be?"

Confused, the doctor turned to him. He wanted to ask who the young man was to the patient, but held back and answered professionally.

"Including the treatment she’s already received, the current bill is approximately ten thousand eight hundred dollars."

The hallway fell silent. Evelyn’s eyes widened in shock and dismay, and she swayed slightly. Ethan calmly supported her and turned to the doctor.

Before he could speak, Chris beat him to it.

"Understood, doctor. I’ll handle the payment. Just give me a few minutes."

Everyone turned to him in surprise, and even the doctor gave him a respectful nod.

"Alright, I’ll be in my office."

With that, he turned around and walked away with the nurses.

"Chris, you’re really a good person! Thank you, thank you!" James immediately grabbed the young man’s hand, his voice filled with emotion.

Ethan stopped himself from smiling and looked at Evelyn in his arms. It was obvious that she felt uncomfortable allowing Chris to handle the bill.

However, she had no other choice. Her business was just growing and she could barely manage to come up with three thousand dollars. How was she supposed to get ten thousand?

Naturally, she thought about Ethan. However, she didn’t think he’d have that much on him. Even though he had started trading recently, he couldn’t have made much progress, right?

If only she knew...

Elena turned to Evelyn, frowning. "Evelyn. Are you just going to stand there and not thank Chris? Did I teach you to be ungrateful?"

Before Evelyn could speak, James delivered his own words too. "Look at this! If it isn’t for Chris here, do you think you’d have money to pay for the bills? My pension still hasn’t been paid, and I can barely help you get a thousand dollars."

His chest heaved, and he glared at Ethan. "Chris has decided to help you pay. On the other hand, what can your so-called husband contribute? Nothing!"

Evelyn bit her lip and lowered her head. She couldn’t refute his statement.

Ethan sighed and glanced at Chris. "I appreciate your support, but we don’t need it."

’?!’

Everyone turned to him in shock. He was refusing?

"Ethan..." Evelyn called his name softly. Her eyes were filled with confusion and worry.

"You... you..." James shook in anger as he pointed at Ethan. "What exactly are you trying to do?! You want Nora to die?"

Ethan’s expression turned cold, and he glared at the older man. "Cut the crap. This is my family, and I’ll handle it to the best of my ability. You don’t get to decide for me."

James’s expression stiffened in shock, as he didn’t think Ethan would talk back at him.

"Let’s go," Ethan said, pulling Evelyn with him as they headed to the doctor’s office.

Chris frowned in confusion. "Ethan, you should know that this is a private hospital. They wouldn’t budge even if you begged them."

Ethan paused, sneering. "Beg? Heh."

He didn’t say anything else and entered the office with his wife.

"That bastard even dared to use that tone with me!" James shouted angrily, then turned to Chris. "You have to help my daughter once he gets kicked out of that office. If you do this, I’m sure we’ll be able to convince her to marry you."

Behind them, Cole’s expression darkened. "Dad, Chris isn’t doing this because he wants Evelyn, right?"

His gaze turned to the young man. "You’re only doing this because you’re her friend. Isn’t that right?"

Faced with Cole’s stern look, Chris gulped. "Of course, of course. Evelyn is my close friend. It’s just that, it pains me to see her suffer in the hands of that man..."

"Who told you she’s suffering?" Cole said defensively.

Cassie quietly stepped beside Chris and supported him. "Big brother Cole, you can’t say that. Are you unaware of what horrible things Ethan has done to your sister? You know he’s scum."

Cole couldn’t deny that. However, he couldn’t just agree too. Before he could say anything, Elena pulled him back and scolded him.

Faced by his mother, he could only shut up.

Soon, Ethan, Evelyn, and the doctor came out of the office with relaxed expressions.

The doctor smiled at Ethan. "Worry not, sir. We’ll handle everything with proper care and find out the trigger."

Ethan smiled back. "Thank you."

The doctor then proceeded to call some nurses into the ward where Nora was so they could start immediately.

James stared at them in disbelief. "He... has he paid?"

The doctor barely spared him a glance. "Mr. Hale has already cleared the bill."
