Repairing A Broken Home With My Patriarch System
Chapter 48: Potential Man (2)Ethan locked his phone, then slipped it into his pocket. He turned to face the young man with a smile, resting his elbows on the counter.
"I’m Ethan. Nice to meet you, Vincent."
Vincent’s eyes narrowed, and he asked, "From where do you know me?"
"I’m not telling you that," Ethan shook his head. "At least, not yet."
Glancing at the waitress behind him, he continued, "Instead, I have a proposal for you."
Vincent glanced at his younger sister, then looked at Ethan.
"What proposal? It better be something meaningful."
Ethan smiled thinly and raised his hands in mock surrender.
"Sure, sure. I understand that."
He pointed to the young lady behind him and said, "Your sister has a passion for selling, but her shop is like a haunted house."
He gestured at the unconscious men on the ground. "No one would want to sit with these scary guys and drink coffee peacefully."
Vincent frowned slightly. "They’re here to protect her. Not interfere with customers."
"Yeah, right," Ethan nodded. "I guess they must be doing their job so well."
Vincent wanted to retort, but had nothing to say. He fell silent, then spoke again.
"You still haven’t told me what you want. Stop beating around the bush."
"Alright," Ethan sighed. "I want to employ your sister. Real employment. Not the fake one where you pay her for drinks not bought. I’m sure she’d like that, no?"
Behind him, the young lady’s eyes glinted. However, she still felt hesitant and looked toward her brother.
Vincent could clearly see the interest in her eyes, but he couldn’t agree. It felt too shady.
"Why her? I can see the ring on your hand, so you’re definitely a married man. You’re not after my sister. What are you after?"
Ethan blinked at him, then looked at him own hand. The sight of the ring on his finger made him smile.
"You’re right. I’m not after your sister. I don’t do minors, anyway."
A flicker of irritation crossed the lady’s face and she glared at him. "I’m not a minor!"
Ethan didn’t even turn to her. "Anyone below 30 is a minor to me."
She stared at him, aghast. "How old are you...?"
Ethan ignored the question and focused on Vincent. "I’m after you specifically."
Even though Ethan wore a harmless smile, Vincent still took a step back, his butt clenching. Ethan read his expression and blinked in disbelief.
"What the hell are you thinking? I’m not after your body, obviously."
He shook his head, chuckling lightly.
"Don’t you want to know about your wife and son?"
Vincent stiffened completely, his eyes wide like saucers. "What... what do you mean? How do you know that?"
Ethan rolled his eyes and said, "If you agree to my proposal, I can help you find them."
Vincent’s expression hardened. "Don’t you dare lie to me. Are you serious?"
"Absolutely." Ethan nodded.
The young man closed his eyes and sighed. After a while, he opened his eyes and looked at his sister. She gave him a short nod.
Knowing how much her brother longed to see the woman he loved and his child, she was ready to do anything.
Vincent turned to Ethan and said, "What kind of place will she be working at?"
Ethan smiled and declared, "A glorious fruit shop!"
.........
Some time later, Ethan returned home after a tiring day. He hadn’t done anything particularly stressful, but he couldn’t help but feel tired.
’Why, though?’
He got his answer as soon as he stepped into the house.
’Ah... I missed home.’
His expression brightened, and he headed to the kitchen where he could see Nora and Evelyn.
The little girl was sitting on the table, watching her mother cook. The instant he entered, she turned to him.
Ethan gave her a signal to keep quiet, then moved silently behind Evelyn. He didn’t want to scare her by tapping her shoulder, so he spoke first.
"Mn? What is the beauty cooking?"
Evelyn flinched, but didn’t panic. She recognized his voice and tried to turn to face him.
However, Ethan stopped her by hugging her from behind, resting his chin on her head.
"Did you miss me?" He asked.
Evelyn nodded shyly. "Hm. It really felt odd with you being absent."
Ethan smiled and closed his eyes. He continued hugging her for a while before he let go.
"That’s enough love. Now, onto my little princess."
He turned to face Nora, who had a small smile on her face. He picked her up and hugged her.
"Did you miss Daddy?"
Nora pursed her lips, then nodded. "I think so..."
Ethan chuckled and patted her back. "Daddy missed you too."
He turned to face Evelyn and asked, "Can you handle all the cooking by yourself? I want to take Nora on a walk."
Nora’s eyes narrowed suspiciously, but she didn’t say anything.
Evelyn smiled at Ethan and nodded. "Sure! You guys can head out! I’ll be done before you come back."
Ethan gave her a thumbs-up, then headed out of the house with his daughter. He held her hand as they walked down the sidewalk.
Several people were just returning home from work, as it was already evening.
Ethan kept the silence for a while, then asked, "What do you want to become?"
Nora turned to him, confused. Why was he asking her that? Still, she thought about it and answered.
"I want to be a pharmacist. Why are you asking?"
Ethan stopped and crouched before her. "I’m asking because I want to know. What made you interested in pharmacy?"
Nora pursed her lips and answered. "I want to know a lot about drugs and how to cure people."
"Oh?" Ethan raised an eyebrow. "Looks like you have a passion for helping people."
A proud expression appeared on his face, and he patted her head. "Since you’re determined to do that, Daddy will help you. Pinky promise?"
He raised a hand toward her. Nora stared at him solemnly, her eyes narrowed. She didn’t bother pretending to smile. Her eyes reddened slightly, and she asked with restrained anger in her voice.
"You’re being nice. But why... why did you treat Mommy like that?"
