"Mn? Why would I tell her that?" Evelyn blinked, confused.

She was sure she hadn’t told Cassie such a thing. It felt improper, after all.

Ethan nodded slowly. "Hm, alright."

"Why did you ask?" Evelyn asked him. "Did you see her on your way back?"

Ethan hummed in acknowledgment. "I met her on my way back. And then she mentioned it to me, saying thank you."

Evelyn frowned. "That’s not right. She was dead drunk so there’s no way she’d know. And you don’t have a strong perfume that can linger until she wakes up."

Ethan nodded, completely agreeing with her. It really wasn’t right.

"Well, it seems she wasn’t exactly unconscious... or... she was pretending to be out cold."

Evelyn’s eyes widened. "Why would she do that? Embarrassment?"

"No," Ethan said, shaking his head. "If she was embarrassed, she wouldn’t have mentioned it to me."

"Ugh. Now, I’m confused."

Grunting, Evelyn covered her face with a hand and thought about it. However, nothing made sense.

’Right. She seems to have forgotten her prejudice towards him ever since we left the hospital during Nora’s case.’

Before she could think further, Ethan patted her shoulder and said, "That’s enough thinking. I’ll figure that out myself. You should eat the cake already."

Evelyn pulled her hand away from her face and smiled. "Alright I’ll do that. Thank you."

Ethan walked away from her and sat in one of the chairs there, thinking and eating.

’What could that woman be planning? I have always felt suspicious of her, but I have no idea what she’s thinking. Hmm.’

After a while, he simply let the thought slide and filed it away for later. He might not know for now, but the things he knew would surely point at other suspicious things to look at when the timing is right.

A while later, Nora woke up and ate the cake after thanking him. Then, he began to teach her again. Their relationship hadn’t greatly improved.

After all, a large part of her still hated him. However, she was finding it hard to transfer her hatred for the man she knew to the current Ethan.

It was conflicting, relieving, and strangely... disappointing.

Ethan picked a small green leaf from her hair and placed it on the table. She turned to him and stared at it.

After a while, he smiled and said, "A crown of flowers would suit you."

She stared at him, then asked, "Why?"

Shrugging, Ethan tapped the book in front of her.

"I don’t know. Just thinking about it. By the way, you should focus on this instead."

Nora didn’t argue, merely doing as he had instructed her.

Ethan smiled as he watched her.

’Hm, this is not bad. If she opens up completely, I might be able to find out why she hated me so much. Perhaps it’s related to Evelyn.’

Shaking his head, he brought his focus back to his daughter and continued lecturing her.

Another week passed quietly, and Evelyn’s shop had now become just as prosperous as her old shop in their previous community.

In fact, it was even better!

On Saturday morning, the government announced the opening of one of their schools in Arcane City, Cold River District, to be precise.

Just like Ethan predicted, the school wasn’t newly built, but bought and renovated to fit the government’s needs.

The instant the news was broadcast, the city went haywire. Several people immediately began preparing to move their kids to the school.

Even parents from other cities began thinking of moving too. After all, the school was just too good and with all necessary facilities. It was a gold mine for parents.

Also, the government attached a policy to the school, which made parents very interested in making their children attend the school.

’A 50% guarantee of admission into any government university after graduating from this school. Not bad,’ He thought, reclining into the couch.

Now, he just had to wait and let things fall in place.

Evelyn worked in the kitchen, handling their breakfast after sternly refusing his help at all. She was getting too comfortable with Ethan being the one who cooked, so she decided to do it this morning.

After all, she didn’t want to lose her specialty as a good wife.

Soon, she served the meal at the table, and everyone gathered to eat. Ethan smiled and gave her a thumbs-up.

Nora also thanked her with a smile and began eating. In a matter of minutes, breakfast was cleared.

Ethan assisted Evelyn in washing the plates, then they all sat in the living room, watching the TV.

Suddenly, Ethan’s phone rang, and he checked. It was a call from an unknown number.

’Hm? Curious...’

He answered the call and said, "Hello?"

The caller replied immediately. "This is Mr. Marcus speaking. I was told that you bought one of my apartments in Cold River District, right?"

Ethan smiled thinly and nodded. "Yes, I did. Is there a problem?"

Mr. Marcus cleared his throat and answered. "Ah... yes. I’d like to buy it back."

Ethan’s smile widened. "That? Not possible, Mr. Marcus. "mMy family and I already moved in."

Evelyn turned to him, curious. She could barely hear what the other person was saying, but she could deduce what their conversation was about from Ethan’s words.

She instantly became worried, wondering if they were being asked to move out of the house.

Ethan smiled and gently pinched her nose while still on the call.

Mr. Marcus seemed disappointed, but he wasn’t deterred. "You live on only one floor, right? I’ll buy the other two. Is that fine?"

Ethan shook his head. "Not fine at all. I have no interest in selling my property, Mr. Marcus. Perhaps you should check for other houses in the area."

The line went silent, then Mr. Marcus spoke again.

"One million dollars. Take it or leave it."

Ethan raised an eyebrow. "That’s huge. But sadly, I’m not interested. You should really look for someone else, alright? Don’t bother me."

Without giving the man a chance to say anything else, he ended the call and closed his eyes.

’Looks like they’re starting to notice.’
