Ethan hurriedly caught her before she fell to the ground, a little astonished. Was she that surprised because he said he didn’t need her money?

’Well, that was definitely unexpected.’

"Is mommy alright?"

Nora asked as she ran up to them, glancing at Ethan suspiciously.

He pretended not to notice, giving her a reassuring nod.

"It seems she’s just tired from work. Let’s close the shop and go home now."

He lay Evelyn on a bench gently, then began to pack things inside and lock the shop. Once he was done, he carried Evelyn on his back and held Nora’s hand as they walked back home.

The moment he carried the woman, he felt her snap awake, but she pretended to be asleep, quietly enjoying the piggyback ride.

Even if his current kindness was fake, at least she wanted to enjoy it while it lasted.

Seeing the family leave, the other fruit sellers were relieved and saw them off with snorts and clicks of their tongues.

Ethan ignored them completely. In his mind, they were beneath his notice.

He soon arrived at their house and managed to unlock the door even while carrying Evelyn.

’Now that I’ve suddenly gained a youthful body, I should train it too.’

He filed the thought away for later.

Carefully, he set Evelyn on the couch and took Nora into the kitchen.

"What are you doing?"

She asked, seeing him put on the apron.

Ethan rolled his eyes. "I’m planning to cook. Why else would I wear an apron?"

The little girl blinked in surprise, her lips parting. "You can cook?"

"Well, I’m sure you didn’t know," He grinned, ruffling her hair. "But I’m the best cook in the world."

Although it felt a little childish to brag like that, he felt like Nora needed it. She was acting too mature for her age, and he needed her to loosen up.

She frowned, glaring daggers at him. "Then why haven’t you tried cooking since? It’s always mommy cooking!"

Ethan felt a little indignant, as he actually hadn’t been the one who she was referring to. However, it wasn’t like she was going to understand if he explained.

Smiling wryly, he picked her up and helped her sit on the kitchen counter.

"Well, Daddy had his reasons, okay? Now, sit and watch me cook."

Although Nora was still frowning, she nodded and remained silent.

Ethan checked the available food ingredients, then shook his head in disappointment.

They really couldn’t compare with the food from his era. But at least it wasn’t entirely strange. He was also born in this era, just that he had mostly grown used to being a powerful man.

’Alright, enough reminiscing. Time to cook and impress the girl.’

His expression grew serious, and his entire demeanor changed. He began to prepare the ingredients one after the other, ensuring everything was ready before he lit the gas cooker.

His entire focus was on the meal he was preparing, so much that he even forgot his surroundings, believing he was alone.

He didn’t even notice when Evelyn walked in, attracted by the aroma wafting through the air.

She stared at him in a daze, her eyes narrowed.

’What is really going on...? Why is he suddenly being nice...? It’s too sudden to believe.’

She stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do. She didn’t know if she should approach him and take over, or if she shouldn’t even approach at all.

’I don’t think he knows I’m here at all...’

She turned her gaze to Nora, seeing the girl watch him cook with rapt attention.

’This was how we were supposed to be. A happy...’

She didn’t dare complete the thought, fearing that her hopes would be crushed for the umpteenth time.

After a moment of hesitation, she joined her daughter in spectating, letting him handle the cooking.

In just a few minutes of watching, suspicion flew out of her mind, replaced by astonishment. Since when was Ethan this good?

She had seen him cook before—back when they were only engaged. Back then, they had cooked a meal together, and she noticed that he was quite the clumsy one.

Now, seeing his movements so refined, she began to doubt her memories.

’Or was he holding back? He didn’t want me to know that he was very good?’

A conflicted look crossed her face as she stared at him.

Meanwhile, Ethan was still cooking when a system notification suddenly appeared before him.

[Family Happiness has increased!]

[Family Happiness: 7.61%]

He paused and raised an eyebrow. ’A whole 0.6%? What happened?’

It was only then that he noticed Evelyn from the corner of his eyes and turned to her.

"Oh, you’re awake now," He smiled faintly. "Nora and I were a little worried."

"O-oh. Sorry about that. I... I guess I was feeling weak," She answered apologetically.

Ethan nodded and turned back to what he was doing, ensuring not a single process went wrong.

In less than ten minutes, he finished cooking and served the meals. This time, Evelyn didn’t stay back and assisted him.

Ethan didn’t refuse, letting her help him. This was going to be his first dinner with the family, so he wanted it to be proper.

"Ethan... are you expecting a friend?" Evelyn asked after noticing a fourth meal on the table.

Ethan gave her a blank stare, then shook his head. "No. It’s for your older brother, woman. Have you forgotten?"

"Ah!" Evelyn gasped in shock, then immediately went to fetch her phone. "I should have messaged him. He probably won’t know we’re eating this early."

It was just 6 p.m—a little early to have dinner.

Ethan watched her fumble with her bag, then chuckled. "I already messaged him, though. He should be here anytime soon."

DING~DONG!

The ringing doorbell proved him right, and Evelyn hurried over to the door to bring him in.

Ethan sat at the head of the table, crossing his fingers and quietly waiting for his brother-in-law to arrive.

After thinking it over carefully, he had decided to use this man as his proxy to enter the business world and establish himself.

After all, being nice alone wasn’t going to solve all his family issues.
