Chapter 22 - 23: Squashing BugsChapter 22: Chapter 23: Squashing Bugs
They did, in fact, find something big enough to use the grenade launcher on.
The grand tour of the training facility eventually led them into a cavernous, multi-tiered animal storeroom. The air in the massive chamber tasted strongly of rusted iron and decades-old wet fur. Heavy industrial cages lined the lower floor, all centered around a massive suspension pen operated by a rusty wall-mounted winch.
Rebecca had easily spotted the glint of a heavy brass key resting directly beneath the central cage. Naturally, the immediate protocol was to crank the winch, raise the iron bars, and retrieve the loot. But the moment they entered the room, Ghosty’s entire demeanor changed. The playful, clingy golden retriever routine completely vanished.
His thick chitin plates flared sharply outward. A low, continuous rumble vibrated deep within his exposed chest cavity.
Because he was acting so insanely tense, Rebecca decided to play it incredibly safe. She hauled back on the heavy iron crank, locking the suspension cage in its raised position, but she firmly refused to step down into the pen to grab the key. She stood near the upper walkway, keeping her newly acquired grenade launcher leveled at the floor below.
Ghosty trotted over to a pile of debris, clamped his massive jaws around a splintered wooden chair leg, and brought it over to her. He dropped the slobber-covered wood at her boots and let out a soft, demanding huff.
Are you seriously asking to play fetch right now?
She stared down at the damp wood, completely bewildered. Ghosty didn’t do a goofy play-bow or wag his tail. He nudged the wooden leg with his snout and then looked deliberately down into the center of the open pen where the key lay.
He wanted her to throw it into the trap.
Before she could even pick up the impromptu throwing toy, Ghosty let out a sharp, clicking sound from the back of his throat. He immediately scrambled down the metal stairs, creeping along the outer edge of the animal pens. He moved with zero sound, his heavy armored frame practically gliding across the shadows until he reached the far corner. He dropped his body entirely flat against the concrete, settling into a tight, coiled prowling stance.
Is he actually setting an ambush?
Rebecca watched him from the walkway, feeling a swell of absurd pride mixing with mounting anxiety. Her mutant dog was actively running calculated tactical maneuvers. There was absolutely no way this level of coordination came from standard canine intelligence. Dogs could fetch and track scents, but formulating cross-fire ambushes using environmental bait required a completely different tier of cognition.
Did the mutation rewrite his brain along with his body?
She tightened her grip on the chair leg, feeling her inner academic researcher buzzing to life. If the T-Virus was capable of elevating an animal’s cognitive functions to this degree, the pathogen was essentially speedrunning the evolutionary race by hundreds of thousands of years. It was a completely revolutionary biological discovery. The scientific implications were absolutely staggering.
She quickly forced herself to shelve that intense curiosity for the moment. The virus had also turned hundreds of human beings and harmless creatures into mindless, bloodthirsty monsters. Marveling at the wonders of forced evolution was probably best saved for a time when she wasn’t trapped in a subterranean nightmare basement.
She slung the grenade launcher over her back, grabbed the slimy chair leg with her left hand, and kept her shotgun raised and braced against her right hip.
Taking a deep breath, she hurled the chunk of wood straight into the center of the pen.
The chair leg clattered loudly against the concrete floor, echoing sharply off the high, vaulted ceiling.
For a long, agonizing few seconds, absolutely nothing happened. The dust simply settled around the shiny brass key.
Then the heavy-duty iron waste grate set into the floor of the pen violently exploded outward.
A fountain of stagnant water and pulverized concrete sprayed into the air. A deafening, multi-layered screech followed, sounding exactly like grinding metal and screaming machinery.
A gigantic armored head burst from the plumbing. Segment after segment of thick, dark brown carapace pulled an impossible length of writhing, multi-legged horror out of the subterranean tunnels.
An absolutely massive centipede hauled itself out of the wreckage.
The creature easily stretched over twenty feet long and was completely double the thickness of Rebecca’s entire body. Hundreds of thick, razor-sharp legs clattered frantically against the stone floor as it coiled its massive bulk around the center of the pen. Thick green slime dripped from its oversized, snapping mandibles, pooling onto the concrete with acidic hisses.
[The Centurion - Giant Centepede (length 10m+)]
What in the world was Umbrella concocting in this place?
A pharmaceutical company making medicines for headaches and seasonal allergies was apparently secretly funding the development of prehistoric nightmare bugs the size of city buses.
The colossal centipede reared the front half of its body high into the air. Its blind, twitching antennae swiveled rapidly until they locked directly onto Rebecca’s position on the walkway. It let out another deafening screech, its countless legs rippling as it prepared to launch its massive bulk straight up toward her.
Ghosty didn’t even give the overgrown bug a chance to flex.
He exploded from his hiding spot in the corner like a cannonball made of black muscle. He cleared the iron railings in a single, massive bound, launching himself directly over the centipede’s rearing head.
Rebecca watched his arc through the air, her eyes tracking the sheer violent momentum of his heavy body. Right in the middle of his jump, his anatomy decided to throw another deeply horrifying curveball into the mix.
The flesh around his pathetic, exposed tailbone violently ripped apart. A massive, heavily armored insectoid tail erupted directly from his hindquarters. It unfurled in a fraction of a second, revealing a thick, segmented scorpion appendage tipped with a gigantic, wickedly curved stinger dripping with dark purple venom.
Did he just spontaneously grow a heavy-artillery scorpion tail?!
Rebecca could only watch in absolute, stunned silence as her supposedly canine bodyguard descended upon the giant centipede, fully equipped to engage the colossal bug in an apocalyptic turf war.
And she had honestly thought she wouldn’t get surprised anymore today.

[Few Minutes Later]
"You are an absolute freak of nature, and I honestly don’t know whether to hug you or shoot you," Rebecca panted.
She violently wiped a thick, foul-smelling smear of neon-green centipede viscera off her cheek with the back of her tactical glove. The massive, cavernous animal pen currently looked like the aftermath of a highly explosive industrial accident.
Retrospectively, the entire boss fight had lasted barely three minutes.
The moment Ghosty had deployed his brand-new, completely unexplained scorpion tail, the territorial dispute had turned into a hopelessly one-sided biological beatdown. He had practically ridden the colossal, thrashing centipede like a mechanical bull. His heavy claws had sunk deep into its armored carapace while he aggressively drove his stinger repeatedly into the base of the bug’s skull.
He pumped the giant insect full of so much highly concentrated purple venom that the creature’s internal organs literally liquefied inside its shell. Rebecca had managed to fire exactly one round from her newly acquired grenade launcher right into the bug’s exposed underbelly, mostly just because she desperately wanted to feel involved in the sheer, unadulterated carnage.
Now the twenty-foot prehistoric nightmare was nothing more than a twitching, smoking pile of segmented armor and melting green sludge.
But the horror show wasn’t quite finished yet.
Ghosty trotted over to the massive, steaming carcass. Rebecca watched as his chest plates separated with a wet squelch. Dozens of thick, red, hair-like tendrils suddenly erupted from his exposed flesh. The writhing mass of threads wiggled in the air before violently burrowing directly into the centipede’s cracked carapace.
It was a process she had seen him perform on several wandering zombies over the last few hours. Watching it happen to a creature of this scale was entirely different.
The centipede’s remaining flesh began to rapidly liquefy, turning into a glowing, crimson-green slurry. The red tendrils acted like organic vacuums, sucking the liquid mass directly back into Ghosty’s body. The sheer speed of the absorption was dizzying. Within seconds, a creature that easily weighed several tons was completely hollowed out.
All that remained of the terrifying Centurion was a dry, empty shell of hollow back plates.
Ghosty’s body didn’t even bloat. He looked exactly the same size as before.
Where the hell does all that physical mass even go?
The beast pulled the dark tendrils back into his skin, gave a satisfied shake of his armored frame, and let out a massive, echoing, human-sounding burp.
Rebecca stared at him with her mouth hanging open in a mix of profound disgust and absolute scientific wonderment.
"That is... the most deeply disturbing thing I have ever witnessed in my entire life," she whispered.
Her scientific curiosity quickly pivoted to the other giant elephant in the room.
"And what the actual fuck was that?!" she demanded, pointing her shotgun accusingly toward his rear end. "Since when do dogs grow giant, fully functional scorpion tails?!"
Ghosty let out a soft chuff, tilting his massive head like he didn’t understand the question.
To her utter shock, the massive, segmented insectoid tail slid back out of his flesh with a wet, squelching sound. The heavily armored black appendage arched high over his back. Its sharp, wicked stinger dripped a tiny bead of purple venom onto the floor.
He made no aggressive moves, simply guiding the heavy tail toward her as the thick segments clicked softly through the air like a mechanical snake.
Rebecca jumped as the smooth, cold tip of the stinger lightly brushed against her bare knee.
"Hey! Keep that thing away from me!" she squeaked, taking a half-step backward.
Ghosty let out a low, rumbling grunt, his tail wagging slightly at the base. He nudged the stinger forward again, completely ignoring her warning. The wickedly sharp, venom-coated tip slid past her kneepad and began to slowly trail up the inside of her thigh.
"G-Ghosty, seriously, stop playing around," she stammered, her breath hitching in her throat.
The stinger didn’t stop. The cold chitin dragged rhythmically upward, tracing the seam of her tight canvas pants with terrifying precision. The razor-sharp point was hovering millimeters from tearing through her uniform and slicing her skin open. One single muscle twitch from the massive beast would inject her with enough neurotoxin to melt her internal organs into soup.
The mortal danger was absolute.
Yet a deeply confusing, entirely irrational reaction began spreading through her nervous system.
Her heart hammered frantically against her ribs. A sudden flush of heat radiated from her core, pooling heavily between her thighs. The memory of his massive, throbbing erection grinding against her back in the briefing room abruptly forced its way into her brain. Her tight canvas pants suddenly felt uncomfortably damp.
This is just the adrenaline. I am just terrified.
She desperately tried to rationalize the heavy ache between her legs as a basic survival response to mortal danger. Her body was just completely overwhelmed by the threat level.
The stinger glided over her tactical belt and began trailing up her stomach. The cold tip ghosted over the zipper of her uniform jacket, slipping dangerously close to her cleavage.
"L-like, um, seriously... you could kill me with that thing," she whispered, her voice coming out as a breathless, trembling gasp.
Ghosty let out a soft, breathy pant. The stinger continued its agonizingly slow ascent. It traced the exposed skin of her collarbone, sending a massive shiver straight down her spine. The sharp point glided up the side of her neck, lightly pressing into the erratic, racing pulse of her jugular vein.
She squeezed her eyes shut, letting out a soft, involuntary whimper.
The stinger slid over her jawline and lightly traced the corner of her lips. She could smell the acrid, chemical burn of the purple venom lingering on the chitin. The physical pressure of the lethal weapon against her mouth sent another massive, shameful jolt of heat straight to her groin.
She forced her eyes open, her chest heaving as she carefully reached up with a trembling, gloved hand. She gently grasped the thick segment of the tail just below the stinger, slowly pushing it away from her face.
"Okay. Okay, point made. You’re very scary," she breathed out, forcing a nervous, slightly hysterical laugh.
Ghosty offered a happy bark, leaving the heavy tail resting in her grip.
As her racing heartbeat began to slightly level out, Rebecca looked closer at the thick, segmented carapace beneath her fingers. The texture, the dark brownish-black coloring, the specific curvature of the stinger all looked incredibly familiar.
"Wait a second," she murmured, her academic brain finally overriding her deeply confusing arousal.
She ran her thumb over a jagged ridge on the chitin.
"I’ve seen this before. This is the exact same carapace from that giant scorpion that crashed through the roof of the train. The one Billy shot."
She looked up at Ghosty, her eyes wide with a terrifying realization.
"You didn’t just eat that scorpion... you absorbed it. You took its DNA."
Ghosty let out a dopey huff, scratching behind his ear with his hind leg like he was just a normal, very good boy.
"That’s... that’s scientifically impossible," she muttered, letting go of his tail and pacing a short circle around the debris. "You can’t just forcefully integrate foreign biological structures into your own genome on the fly. Your cells would reject the mutation. You’d completely destabilize."
She paused, gesturing wildly toward the melted puddle of the centipede.
"But then again, twenty-foot prehistoric bugs weren’t exactly a known scientific reality until yesterday either."
She stared at her bizarre, heavily armored companion. The implications of his biology were staggering. He was an apex predator capable of stealing the evolutionary traits of everything he consumed, constantly rewriting his own genome.
"Listen to me very carefully," she said, pointing a stern finger at him. "You are not allowed to absorb that centipede’s legs. If you start popping a hundred creepy little bug arms out of your ribs, our partnership is officially over. I will dump every single grenade I have straight down your throat."
Ghosty let out a high-pitched, pathetic whine, immediately retracting his scorpion tail back into his flesh with a wet slurp. He sat down on the concrete and gave her the saddest, most innocent puppy-dog eyes a skinless hellhound could possibly muster.
"Yeah, yeah, save the act," she sighed, a small, genuine smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
She turned her attention back to the massive iron grate in the center of the room. A shallow puddle of murky water and pulverized concrete surrounded the small, shiny object they had initially come for.
"Alright, let’s just grab the loot and get out of here," she said, stepping carefully over the debris.
She bent down at the waist, her tight uniform pants stretching taut across her rear as she reached into the water.
"Got it," Rebecca muttered, her fingers closing around the cool brass of the Fire Key, unaware that a certain naughty partner of her was about to do something inappropriate.
