Resident Evil: The Dead Must Breed (Zombie/Monster Evolutions Fanfic)
Chapter 38 - 37: HuntedChapter 38: Chapter 37: Hunted
Rebecca stared at the headless corpse. Then at Ghosty. Then back at the corpse.
Her brain was trying very hard to file what she’d just witnessed under some kind of rational category and failing spectacularly.
His entire face had split open like some kind of nightmare flower. He’d clamped down on that thing’s skull and just... ripped it clean off. Swallowed it whole like a party trick.
"Ghosty... what the fuck was that?"
The mutant hellhound turned to look at her, his milky eyes crinkling at the edges in what she could only describe as puppy-dog innocence. His mouth fell open in a dopey grin, tongue lolling out the side. Thick rivulets of dark green blood dripped steadily from his chin, pattering onto the metal grates.
BUUUURP.
He burped. A delicate little sound that was absolutely horrifying given the context.
Then his tail stump wagged.
Rebecca’s eye twitched.
A fresh spray of blood splattered across the floor from the movement, and that snapped her back into focus.
"Oh my god, you’re bleeding!"
She dropped her shotgun, the weapon clattering loudly as she fell to her knees right in the middle of the carnage. Her hands flew to her tactical pouch, ripping it open to grab sterile gauze and compression bandages.
The severed stump of his scorpion tail was gushing. Not dripping. Gushing. Dark, blackish-red blood pumped out in steady pulses, pooling around his hind legs. The deep gashes carved into his flanks weren’t much better, weeping heavily through gaps in his armor plating.
"Hold still," she ordered, pressing a thick wad of gauze directly against the ruined meat of his tail.
Ghosty whined softly. Instead of staying put like a reasonable patient, he leaned his entire two-hundred-pound bulk forward and shoved his blood-soaked snout into her shoulder, rubbing enthusiastically.
"Ugh, stop it! You’re getting blood and God-knows-what-else all over my uniform," Rebecca complained, trying to keep pressure on the wound while simultaneously dodging his affectionate assault. "Seriously, hold still or you’re going to bleed out right here."
The gauze was soaking through in seconds. She could feel the hot pulse of blood against her palms, way too much pressure for comfort.
"Does it hurt?" she asked, her voice softening despite her frustration. She grabbed another roll of bandages, trying to wrap it around the base of the stump. "Because that looks like it would hurt a lot."
Ghosty let out a light, airy bark.
Then he leaned in and dragged his massive tongue right up the side of her neck.
Rebecca squeezed her eyes shut, her face burning.
"Hurts my ass," she muttered, shoving his snout away with her forearm. "You look like you’re enjoying this way too much."
He panted happily, completely ignoring her attempts at proper wound care. His gaze drifted past her shoulder, locking onto the headless reptile corpse behind her.
He shifted his weight, clearly about to stand up.
"Wait, hold still, you glutton," Rebecca snapped, pressing both palms firmly against the bleeding stump to anchor him in place. "You can eat later. Let me patch this up first or you won’t have a stomach left to digest it with."
Ghosty completely ignored her.
He stretched his front paws forward and slammed them onto the dead creature’s broad chest.
The skin on his forelegs split open.
Hundreds of dark red tendrils erupted from the torn flesh, plunging into the reptilian meat like grotesque drinking straws.
Rebecca froze, her hands still clamped around his tail stump.
She’d seen him do this before. Multiple times. But she’d never been this close.
The tendrils weren’t just absorbing. They were pulsing. Expanding and contracting in perfect, rhythmic synchronization, like a bundle of obscene biological pumps. The wet, slurping sound they made was deeply, profoundly unsettling.
The massive corpse started to shrivel. The thick green scales dulled and cracked. The muscle mass deflated like a punctured tire. The bones turned brittle and gray.
At the exact same moment, heat flared under Rebecca’s hands.
She looked down.
The ruined stump of his tail was bubbling.
Fresh muscle tissue knitted together at a visible rate, dark fibers weaving through the open wound like organic thread. Glossy black chitin plates pushed up through the new flesh, clicking into place.
The stump was growing.
Fast.
"Wait, what..."
The regenerating mass surged forward, swallowing her fingers.
"Hey!" Rebecca yelped, trying to yank her hands back.
She couldn’t.
The rapidly expanding flesh clamped down around her wrists, trapping her completely. It wasn’t painful, just firm and immovable, like her hands were stuck in warm, wet concrete.
Panic spiked through her chest.
She could feel everything. The slick, squirming sensation of muscle fibers weaving around her knuckles. The intense heat of his accelerated metabolism. The thick, rhythmic pulse of blood pumping directly against her palms.
It was like she’d shoved her hands into a living meat-sleeve.
"Let go! Ghosty, let go!" she shrieked, bracing her boots against his hind legs and pulling with everything she had.
The tail just kept growing, pushing past her wrists, creeping up her forearms in a tight cocoon of regenerating monster flesh.
Ghosty finished draining the first corpse. It collapsed into a pile of dry, hollow bones and ash. He huffed in satisfaction, half his wounds already sealed.
Then he spotted the second corpse. The one she’d melted with acid rounds.
He trotted forward.
"Wait, slow down!" Rebecca screamed.
She was dragged across the metal floor, stumbling awkwardly on her knees while her arms remained buried inside his tail. She looked completely ridiculous, like some kind of deranged water-skier being pulled by an invisible boat.
"Watch the acid! Ghosty, watch the acid!" she yelled, desperately trying to keep her knees from sliding into the smoking green puddles scattered across the floor.
Ghosty carefully tiptoed around the corrosive spills, his claws clicking lightly on clean grates. He reached the second corpse and immediately deployed his tendrils again.
A second later, his entire body went rigid.
He yanked the tendrils back, his snout wrinkling in absolute disgust. He hacked violently, chest heaving, and spat a massive glob of smoking gray sludge onto the floor.
BLEGH.
Rebecca stared at the dramatic display.
A breathless, hysterical laugh bubbled up from her throat.
"Serves you right," she wheezed, shaking her head. "That’s what you get for eating garbage."
Ghosty shot her an offended look, his ears pinning back. He huffed dismissively, turned back to the melted mess, and aggressively shoved his tendrils into it again.
He gagged. Twice. His whole body shuddered with revulsion.
But he kept eating.
Rebecca watched in morbid fascination as the last of the corpse vanished into his system. The gashes on his flanks sealed completely. His new scorpion tail flexed, fully restored and gleaming with fresh black chitin.
He was perfectly healed.
Rebecca sat there on her knees, chest heaving, staring at the casually burping bioweapon.
Her arms were still buried elbow-deep inside his tail.
"Uh," she said slowly. "Ghosty?"
He turned to look at her, wagging.
"My hands," she said, her voice climbing in pitch. "My hands are still inside you."
Ghosty blinked.
"Get them out!" Rebecca shrieked, yanking uselessly against the warm, fleshy prison. "Couldn’t have warned me a bit?! My hands are inside your guts! Do you know how disgusting this feels?!"
She could still feel everything. The wet heat. The rhythmic pulsing. The slick texture of internal tissue sliding against her skin.
"Ugh, it’s so gross," she groaned, her face twisting in revulsion. "Get it out! Do your magic thing and make the tail disappear! I know you can do it, I’ve seen you retract it before!"
Ghosty stopped pulling his weird wet tendrils back into his legs and just stared at her. He let out a wet, gurgling bark.
"What do you mean, bark?" Rebecca demanded, yanking her arms again. "I said get my hands out of your ass-tail! Do that gross shrinking thing you do! Right now, you perverted mutt!"
She genuinely thought nothing could surprise her anymore. She had already been dick-slapped by a mutant dog, watched him eat a giant centipede, and had her hands swallowed by his regenerating flesh. Her threshold for absolute bullshit was completely maxed out.
She was very, very wrong.
Ghosty let out another sound, but this one was not a bark. It was a deep, wet rattle that tore out of his throat like he was choking on a fistful of wet rocks. His milky eyes rolled completely back into his skull.
"Ghosty?" Rebecca stopped pulling.
His massive front legs buckled. He collapsed onto the metal grates with a heavy thud, his entire two-hundred-pound body violently seizing.
"Oh my god, hey—hey, what’s wrong?!" Rebecca gasped, scrambling forward on her knees as much as the tail-trap would allow. "Ghosty, look at me! What is happening?!"
He didn’t look at her. His jaw snapped wide open, and a thick river of black sludge vomited out onto the floor.
Then came the noise.
It sounded like thick tree branches snapping in half right next to her ear.
His front shoulders jerked upward at a sickening, completely unnatural angle. The heavy black armor plates along his back started peeling outward, popping off his skin like loose scabs.
"Oh god... oh my god, you’re sick," Rebecca panicked, her heart hammering against her ribs. She desperately tried to reach out to touch his face, but both of her hands were still firmly cemented inside the meat of his scorpion tail. "It was the acid, wasn’t it?! You shouldn’t have eaten that melted garbage! You poisoned yourself!"
Ghosty let out a horrifying, high-pitched squeal.
The thick, patchy fur on his neck and legs started falling out in massive, bloody clumps, sliding off his body and slapping against the metal floor. His skin bubbled. The flesh underneath started stretching and tearing, exposing raw red meat that immediately began knitting itself back together in thick, ropy cords.
This is my fault. I let him eat that thing. I basically fed him a giant bowl of poison and now he’s actually dying.
"I’m so sorry! Just—just hold on!" she pleaded, tears pricking the corners of her eyes. She tugged frantically at her trapped arms. "Let me go so I can help you! I can find some medicine or—or pump your stomach or something! Please, Ghosty!"
His spine arched violently backward. The sound of his vertebrae cracking and grinding together made her stomach roll.
The thick meat of the scorpion tail encasing her hands suddenly turned blistering hot. It felt like sticking her arms into a boiling pot of oatmeal. The muscle fibers wrapped around her wrists aggressively spasmed, turning soft and liquid.
With a disgusting, wet slurping noise, the entire tail just completely melted away into thin air.
Freed so suddenly, Rebecca lost her balance. She tumbled backward, landing hard on her butt against the freezing metal grates.
She scrambled away, pushing herself backward with her hands and feet, her eyes completely glued to the horrifying scene unfolding in front of her.
Ghosty wasn’t a dog anymore.
His limbs stretched out, growing thicker and longer by the second. His ribcage violently snapped open and expanded, piling on hundreds of pounds of dense, bulging muscle mass. Thick, dark green scales aggressively pushed their way out of his raw skin, covering his entire body in heavy reptilian armor.
He pushed himself off the floor, rising up on two massive, digitigrade legs.
Rebecca stopped crawling. She just sat there on her ass, completely frozen.
The creature standing in front of her was easily seven feet tall. It had a broad, massive chest covered in thick green scales. Its long, muscular arms ended in hands the size of dinner plates, each sporting three curved, razor-sharp scythe claws.
It was a Hunter.
It looked exactly like the two horrifying monsters she had just helped kill.
No. No, no, no. Where did he go? Where is my dog?
The giant green lizard slowly turned its head to look down at her.
Rebecca stopped breathing entirely. Her shotgun was lying on the floor a solid ten feet away. She was sitting completely exposed, entirely weaponless, staring up at a towering reptilian killing machine that could easily pop her head off like a ripe cherry.
The creature’s heavy jaw hung open, exposing rows of jagged, yellow teeth. Thick ropes of saliva dripped from its gums, pooling on the floor with heavy splats. It took one massive, booming step toward her.
"Ghosty...?" she whispered, her voice trembling so badly it barely made a sound.
The Hunter let out a low, rumbling hiss that vibrated right through the metal floor into her bones.
She pressed her back against the wall. There was nowhere left to go. Her mind was racing and despite her best effort found herself unable to suppress the rising panic.
"Is... is that you, buddy?" she stammered, holding one hand out in a pathetic, completely useless gesture of peace. "It’s me. Rebecca. Remember? We play fetch with concrete chunks. You—you like my thighs, remember? You really like them. Please don’t eat me."
The Hunter tilted its massive, scaly head to the side.
Then it crouched down, its thick leg muscles coiling like massive springs.
Oh my god, he’s going to eat me. I’m going to die in this stupid basement and get digested by my own pet.
Then suddenly the massive reptile launched itself through the air.
"KYAAAAAAAAAAAAA!" Rebecca screamed at the top of her lungs, throwing both of her arms over her face and squeezing her eyes completely shut.
