Lv Jieshi and Lady Lv followed Lv Baicha all the way until they reached the courtyard in front of the Blood Refiners Guild. Gazing at the guild, Lv Baicha’s knees suddenly went weak, and he knelt in the middle of the street, facing the guild, motionless.
"Baicha!" Lv Jieshi and Lady Lv were frantic when they saw this. They wondered if their son had contracted some kind of disease.
Their son had read extensively from the works of the Sages and knew the principle that a man’s knees hold gold—that one should kneel only to heaven, earth, and one’s parents, and never to anyone else.
But now, Lv Baicha knelt.
This made Lv Jieshi and Lady Lv worry that their son’s mind had been affected by the shock. They wanted to go forward and help Lv Baicha to his feet.
But Lv Baicha refused. "No, Father, Mother. My mind is a complete mess right now, but I feel I must kneel."
"What are you doing?" Lv Jieshi, also a scholar, saw that his son seemed to lack the integrity of a learned man by kneeling before the Blood Refiners Guild. "That Ancestor of Blood Refinement may have talent, but he has no virtue. Such a person is not worthy of your veneration."
"Father, I won’t allow you to say that!" Lv Baicha roared, as if his parents were his foster family and the Ancestor of Blood Refinement was his true father. "He is a genuine master! My future is so uncertain; only he can guide my path!"
"He can guide your path?"
Lv Jieshi and Lady Lv were both stunned. They couldn’t understand why their son, who until recently had loathed the Ancestor of Blood Refinement to the point of grinding his teeth, now held him in such high esteem. The more they thought about it, the more confused they became, until they were utterly baffled.
「Inside the Blood Refiners Guild」
"Ancestor, Lv Baicha has come again, bringing his parents with him. He’s kneeling in front of our gate now," Meng Tian reported to Wu Tian as soon as he heard the news.
He was also puzzled. Just the day before yesterday, Lv Baicha was full of bitter resentment, grinding his teeth in hatred for us Blood Refiners. But now... he’s suddenly kneeling?
Even Meng Tian wondered if Lv Baicha was out of his mind.
In Meng Tian’s view, scholars were the most stubborn of people. If he hadn’t seen it with his own eyes, he would never have believed that a man of such spirit and integrity would suddenly kneel. But the proof was right before him, and he had to believe it.
Could they be masochists? They get angry when they’re abused, but then they relish the memory of it afterward? Meng Tian thought with dark humor.
Perhaps if I abuse them a bit in the future, they’ll treat me much more politely, the old man Bo Gu mused, sharing Meng Tian’s train of thought.
In their eyes, there was no logical reason for a scholar like Lv Baicha to go from being furious one day to kneeling the next. It had to be because he was a masochist who hadn’t been abused much before. After experiencing it, he felt so refreshed that he had come again today for no other reason than to ask for more.
If Wu Tian knew what the two were thinking, he would surely be astonished. It seemed that people who lived underground for too long developed thoughts vastly different from those of ordinary people.
"Let him keep kneeling." Wu Tian had no time to deal with Lv Baicha. He had already summoned Peony and was considering what to do with her. She was a flower in the image of the Peony Fairy. But the Peony Fairy had left behind no cultivation techniques or magical treasures. What in the Heavenly Emperor’s Treasure House would suit Peony?
Wu Tian didn’t know. He gazed at Peony, lost in thought.
In the Mythical World, the Peony Fairy was the Queen Mother’s closest handmaiden. She was later reincarnated as White Peony, a famed courtesan from a brothel. She eventually met Lv Dongbin, who had come intending to help her cultivate. Amid their entanglement, she fell in love with him again and tried every means possible to stay by his side. However, for the sake of the common people, she ultimately chose to let him go. Later, she died at the hands of the Pangolin.
The Peony before him was a flower in the image of the Peony Fairy, and also of White Peony. Wu Tian considered what Supreme Treasure to give her. This will be related to her future status in the Heavenly Court. One day, the Heavenly Court will be re-established within the Immortal Emperor Realm. Peony’s role will be to serve as a fairy overseeing the Immortal Peach Orchard.
An idea struck him, and Wu Tian now knew what to have Peony learn.
"Bo Gu, Meng Tian, I’m stepping out for a bit," Wu Tian said. "As for Lv Baicha, I’ll leave him to you for now."
With that, Wu Tian leaned in and whispered into Bo Gu’s and Meng Tian’s ears.
"Does it have to be this way?" Meng Tian asked, looking troubled. "Three steps, one kneel; five steps, one bow; seven steps, one kowtow... Would Lv Baicha be willing?"
Bo Gu nodded in agreement. Making a scholar kneel was already a significant feat. But to demand three steps, one kneel; five steps, one bow; seven steps, one kowtow? To expect a scholar to do that?
Too hard!
Extremely hard!
Insanely, unbelievably hard!
Scholars believed that a man’s knees hold gold. Young scholars, especially, don’t understand compromise and blindly follow such principles.
"The legacy he seeks is extraordinary," Wu Tian explained simply. "This ordeal is necessary to make him understand that nothing of value comes easily."
"Come with me," Wu Tian said, turning to Peony.
"Just the two of us?" Peony asked, bewildered.
Wu Tian nodded and then led Peony out of the Blood Refiners Guild. Stepping outside, he didn’t even glance at Lv Baicha, who was still kneeling on the ground.
"Peony, let’s go. I’ll take you to do something joyous."
"Yes." Peony, unsure how to face Lv Baicha, could only follow the Ancestor of Blood Refinement.
"Joyous things?" Lv Jieshi clenched his teeth. Looking at Lv Baicha, who was still on the ground, he said, "Get up. It’s not worth it."
The woman you love is going off to have ’joyous’ fun with another man, and you’re still kneeling here? Do you have any dignity left?
"Father, ’joyous things’ doesn’t necessarily mean relations between a man and a woman. You mustn’t jump to conclusions." Since the memories of Immortal Donghua and Lv Dongbin had begun to intermingle in his mind, Lv Baicha had changed, even though he hadn’t yet sorted out what it all meant.
At this moment, he no longer seemed like a simple scholar but more like a martial scholar. His once-gentle brows now faintly bore the contours of sword-like brows. He said, "I was the one who was wrong. I doubted the Ancestor of Blood Refinement and was too obsessed with my own purity... I was wrong, so I must kneel. This isn’t a show for others to see. I am doing this to declare to the world my resolve to correct my mistake. I will kneel here indefinitely to demonstrate my sincerity and prove that my will to change is unshakeable."
Lv Baicha’s tone was firm and resolute, completely devoid of his previous scholarly demeanor.
Lv Jieshi and Lady Lv were astounded.
What has happened to our son? He’s no longer speaking so gently; instead, he carries the aura of a warrior? But isn’t he the one who detests martial practice the most?
Too many things had happened today. Lv Jieshi and Lady Lv felt dizzy. They couldn’t understand it; they couldn’t make sense of any of it.
