As if responding to his words, the pale roots attached to his arms began shrinking.

They slowly pulled away from his skin.

Tiny wounds remained behind, but there was no heavy bleeding.

The same thing was happening to the other captives.

Without the queen controlling them, the roots could no longer maintain the connection.

"That saves us some trouble," Vanish said.

"Don’t relax yet," Leng Pan warned. "Some roots could still be inside their bodies."

She used her mist to inspect the scarred man.

Several small parasites remained near his spine and heart, but they were no longer active.

They would still have to be removed carefully.

Leng Pan could not treat hundreds of people inside an unstable chamber.

"We should move them into my space," Lu Zhen said.

Sonny and Vanish looked at him.

They knew he had a storage ability, but storing living people was another matter.

A regular storage space should not be able to hold them.

Leng Pan quickly understood what he meant.

They could pretend that Lu Zhen was storing the sacs while she secretly transferred the captives into her living space.

However, there was one problem.

"Not in the main area," she said softly.

The captives might carry active parasites.

She could not place them near the house, farmland, animals, dragons, or supplies.

The high-tech mansion had isolation rooms, but there were not enough for hundreds of people.

"We can use the empty warehouse near the edge," Lu Zhen suggested. "You can create separate barriers around them."

Leng Pan nodded.

That could work for a short time.

She turned towards Sonny and Vanish.

"Bring the sacs closer together. Ah Zhen will store them."

Neither man questioned the order.

They trusted the couple enough to know that Lu Zhen would not suffocate the captives inside an ordinary storage space.

Sonny and Vanish began moving the sacs.

Little Vine joined them.

With its newly divided tendrils, it could carry several people at once.

"You must be gentle," Leng Pan warned.

Little Vine slowed down immediately.

It wrapped each sac carefully and placed it near Lu Zhen.

Whenever Lu Zhen waved his hand, Leng Pan transferred the captives into the isolated warehouse in her space.

She formed mist barriers between them to prevent any surviving parasites from spreading.

The process took time.

Meanwhile, the underground stream continued rising.

Water had reached their ankles by the time half the captives were stored.

Chief Gao remained inside the mist barrier, watching them.

"You can store living people," he said.

Lu Zhen looked at him coldly.

"It would be better for you if you forgot what you saw."

Chief Gao closed his mouth.

Another large stone fell from the ceiling.

Lu Zhen burned it before it could crush two sacs.

"We need to move faster," he said.

Sonny wiped the sweat from his forehead.

"We are trying."

Little Vine extended more tendrils.

It carried ten sacs at once, but the effort caused its body to tremble.

Leng Pan sent it a little more energy.

"You don’t have to show off."

Little Vine straightened proudly.

It could manage.

Eventually, the last captive disappeared into Leng Pan’s space.

Only the scarred man remained.

Leng Pan wanted someone who could explain what had happened underground once they returned to the surface.

Vanish carried him on his back.

"What about the queen’s body?" Sonny asked.

"We will take a sample," Leng Pan said. "The researchers might need it."

Little Vine immediately lifted a tendril.

"No. You are not eating the sample."

The vine lowered it again.

Lu Zhen burned a section of the queen’s body to make sure no parasites remained alive.

Leng Pan then placed it inside a sealed container before storing it separately.

The rest of the body was consumed by Lu Zhen’s fire.

As it burned, something metallic fell from the queen’s abdomen.

Clang!

A black object landed on the stone floor.

It was about the size of a palm and shaped like an eye.

"The symbol Chief Gao mentioned," Leng Pan said.

Lu Zhen picked it up carefully.

A red light flashed across its surface.

Several lines of unfamiliar writing appeared.

Then the words changed into a language they could understand.

[Recovery signal confirmed.]

[Target identity: Leng Pan.]

[Location locked.]

[Estimated arrival: twenty-seven minutes.]

Vanish leaned closer.

"Can we get out of here in twenty-seven minutes?"

The chamber shook so violently that part of the wall collapsed into the stream.

Lu Zhen placed the device inside a separate section of his space.

"We had better."

They rushed towards the tunnel.

Little Vine moved ahead and held the falling stones away from the entrance.

The water behind them rose rapidly.

By the time they reached the stairs, it had climbed above their knees.

Chief Gao stumbled inside the moving mist barrier.

"Wait! I can’t keep up."

Lu Zhen did not slow down.

"Then you should run faster."

"I am injured!"

"So are Sonny and Vanish. They aren’t complaining."

Vanish adjusted the scarred man on his back.

"I might complain later."

"You can do that after we survive," Sonny said.

They reached the top of the stairs.

However, the stone floor above them had closed again.

Little Vine pushed against the pale roots controlling it, but the roots did not move.

Although the queen was dead, the structure had become stuck.

Lu Zhen raised his fist.

"Move back."

He covered his arm in fire and struck the floor.

The first blow cracked the stone.

The second created a hole.

On the third strike, the floor exploded upwards.

Moonlight poured into the passage.

Lu Zhen climbed out first, followed by Leng Pan and the others.

The guest house was empty.

However, shouting could be heard outside.

Leng Pan hurried towards the door.

Ouyang Jin and the rest of the team were gathering the recovering villagers in the centre of the village.

Old Chen stood beside his granddaughter, who had been carried out of their house.

The girl looked weak but conscious.

When he saw Chief Gao, Old Chen’s expression changed.

"You!"

Chief Gao moved behind Lu Zhen’s mist barrier as if it could protect him from the angry villagers.

"We don’t have time to deal with him now," Leng Pan said. "An alien recovery team is coming."

"How long?" Ouyang Jin asked.

"Less than half an hour."

Ouyang Jin looked around at the injured villagers.

They could not fight while protecting so many people.

"We should evacuate."

"Where?" Old Chen asked. "The locusts destroyed everything outside."

Leng Pan looked towards the three vehicles parked beyond the village wall.

They did not have enough space for everyone.

Leaving the villagers behind would mean leaving them for the aliens.

Before she could decide, Lu Zhen took out the black device again.

The red light was flashing faster.

[Estimated arrival: eighteen minutes.]

"The time changed," Lu Tao said.

"It is getting here faster."

A low hum came from the sky.

Everyone looked up.

Far above the village, three red lights appeared between the clouds.

The recovery unit had already arrived.
