"Sometimes, I could hear a voice giving commands. When the voice spoke, every zombie I saw in the dream would move together."

The aliens had already started connecting human minds to zombies.

The parasites in the village had only been one part of the experiment.

"You said they were building an army," Lu Zhen said. "How many zombies did you see underground?"

"I couldn’t count them."

"Give us an estimate."

"Hundreds of thousands."

Zhao Kun’s answer confirmed the information they had found.

"The tunnels beneath the city go on for kilometres. Some sections contain ordinary zombies. Others have evolved ones."

"Were they restrained?" Leng Pan asked.

"No. They stayed still on their own."

"Someone was controlling them."

"Yes."

Zhao Kun took a slow breath.

"There were intelligent zombies among them. They acted like officers. Whenever one moved, the weaker zombies made way."

Leng Pan remembered their earlier suspicions.

The locusts had not eaten the missing zombies.

The aliens and intelligent zombies had gathered them.

"Did you see aliens inside the facility?" Lu Zhen asked.

"At first, I thought they were ability users wearing unusual armour. Later, I saw one remove its human face."

Zhao Kun shuddered.

"It peeled the skin away like a mask."

"Some of them use human shells," Leng Pan said.

"That thing had blue skin underneath. It looked at us as if we were livestock."

"Did Commander Qiu ever visit the facility?"

"I did not see him personally, but I heard his name."

"What did the soldiers say?"

"They said Commander Qiu wanted results before the final deployment."

"Deployment against whom?" Lu Zhen asked.

"A survivor base."

"Which one?"

"I don’t know."

Zhao Kun’s frustration was clear.

"They never discussed important information in front of us. Most of what I know came from overhearing guards."

"Anything could help."

"I heard them mention a city with an underground shelter. They said it had a large population and strong ability users."

Leng Pan and Lu Zhen exchanged a glance.

Many bases had underground shelters after the warning about the locusts.

However, only a few had large populations and strong ability users.

Their own base was one of them.

"Did they mention a name?" Leng Pan asked.

"No."

"When did you hear this?"

"Before I escaped. Four months ago."

The target might have changed since then.

Still, they could not ignore the possibility that the zombie army was intended for their base.

"How did you escape?" Lu Zhen asked.

"The gate malfunctioned."

Zhao Kun touched the scar on his face again.

"The soldiers took forty of us into the lowest part of the facility. They connected our implants to a machine surrounding the gate."

"Why?"

"They wanted human minds to stabilize it."

Leng Pan frowned.

"That does not make sense."

"I don’t understand it either. One of the aliens said human consciousness could act as an anchor."

"An anchor between two locations?" Lu Zhen asked.

"I think so."

Zhao Kun’s breathing increased.

"The ring began glowing. At first, the space inside it looked black. Then something appeared on the other side."

"What did you see?" Leng Pan asked.

"A city."

"An alien city?"

"I don’t know."

Zhao Kun closed his eyes as he remembered.

"The sky was red. The buildings were black and taller than anything I had seen before. There were lights moving between them."

The aliens might have been trying to open a passage to their own world.

"Did anything come through?" Lu Zhen asked.

"Not completely."

Zhao Kun’s face lost more colour.

"A hand appeared."

"A hand?" Leng Pan repeated.

"It was large enough to fill half the gate. It had six fingers, and each one was covered in black scales."

The creature had tried to cross.

However, the gate became unstable before its body could pass through.

Energy exploded across the chamber.

Many prisoners died immediately.

Zhao Kun had been thrown against a machine, and a piece of metal had cut his face.

"The soldiers panicked," he continued. "Some ran towards the gate while others tried to shut it down."

"What happened to the creature?" Leng Pan asked.

"The gate closed on its arm."

"Was the arm severed?"

Zhao Kun nodded.

"It fell inside the facility."

"What did the aliens do with it?"

"They were excited."

"After so many people died?" Leng Pan asked.

"They did not care about us. They only cared that something had crossed."

The aliens had treated the failure as progress.

"What happened next?" Lu Zhen asked.

"The explosion damaged the power system. Some zombies escaped from the holding area."

"In the confusion, you ran."

"Yes."

Zhao Kun found a maintenance tunnel and followed it until he reached the surface outside the city.

He had wandered for several days before Commander Qiu’s soldiers captured him again.

Instead of returning him to Tayi City, they delivered him to the village.

"They said the Mother could still use damaged subjects," Zhao Kun said bitterly.

Leng Pan looked at the scars and puncture marks covering his body.

He had escaped one experiment only to be thrown into another.

"The gate was unstable four months ago," she said. "Could they have repaired it by now?"

"They were already close."

"How close?"

Zhao Kun hesitated.

"The night before I escaped, I heard one of the aliens say they only needed a stronger energy source."

The purification crystal.

The alien recovery unit had arrived quickly because the queen sent a signal and Lu Zhen removed the crystal.

Perhaps the aliens wanted to take it to Tayi City and use it to stabilize the gate.

"Did the gate’s energy look blue?" Lu Zhen asked.

"Yes."

The crystal inside his space suddenly became warm.

Lu Zhen felt the change immediately.

He looked towards the direction where he had stored it.

"What happened?" Leng Pan asked.

"The crystal reacted."

"To Zhao Kun’s description?"

"Maybe."

They left the warehouse and moved to the isolated section where Lu Zhen had transferred the purification crystal from his public storage space into Leng Pan’s space for safety.

The crystal floated above the ground.

Blue light moved inside it.

The moment Leng Pan approached, the water-purifying shard she had previously collected flew out of her storage area.

It stopped beside the larger crystal.

Both stones began pulsing in the same rhythm.

"They are connected," Leng Pan said.

"Could they be pieces of the same object?" Zhao Kun asked.

"That is possible."

Thin lines of light appeared between the crystals.

The energy formed an image in the air.

It looked like a circular pattern divided into several sections.

Only two sections were illuminated.

The remaining sections were empty.

Then a map of the country appeared beneath it.

Several points lit up.

The strongest one was located beneath Tayi City.

Lu Zhen studied the pattern.

"The aliens have more fragments."

"At least three," Leng Pan said. "Maybe more."

One point on the map flashed red.

It was moving.

Zhao Kun leaned forward.

"What is that?"

Leng Pan followed its path.

The red point was travelling from Tayi City towards another location.

A second symbol appeared ahead of it.

It marked a survivor base.

The distance between them was decreasing.

"The army deployment was supposed to begin in three days," Lu Zhen said.

"It looks as if part of it has already started moving."

Words appeared beneath the map.

They were not written in any human language, but the smaller crystal translated the meaning directly into Leng Pan’s mind.

Her expression changed.

"What does it say?" Lu Zhen asked.

Leng Pan looked at him.

"The first zombie army will reach its target in eighteen hours."
