While I'm always in regular contact with my bestie Pippi, I hadn't been to the IT area since she got there. When I put support tickets in for tech issues at the library, she disappointingly hadn't been the staffer to visit. Even outside of her venting to me about wanting to talk to people outside her department, I got the vibe that adjusting to this job was rough on her.
That's how it was when we both ended up working at the same college; Pippi had a rocky start, and while she would have gotten through it fine on her own eventually, I did my best to support her. I hoped this mat ball game would be just the thing to get her to socialize a bit more.
"I'm kinda into this," I said, lightly smacking the signup sheet Evy had gotten from Caya. "I feel like I'm a pro recruiter or something."
"Then let's hopefully get us a star player," Evy said.
"I didn't even ask yet!" I said. "Are you good at mat ball? Did you pick up any strats or techniques from going to that mat ball game with Zeta?"
"I'm decent, and no," Evy said. "That was a fun day, but all I got from that mat ball game was a shared bond with Zeta about seeing sports live."
"Well, she's pretty much our kid, so it's good to have things in common," I said.
Evy scratched the side of her head, a small smile crossing her lips. "Still surreal to think about it that way..."
"Good surreal?" I asked.
"Yeah, I'd say so." Evy's grin got wider.
The IT area on campus wasn't far from the main library, with the main office past some big data tower things. Pippi was busy untangling cords at her desk, not noticing us for a good minute as she frantically shifted between trying to get a pile of cords unwrapped from each other with rushed typing on three different computers.
"Oh! Stella! And Evy?" Pippi said, pushing her glasses up. "Oh, I'm really sweaty right now. Why am I so sweaty from this?"
"Sorry to catch you in the middle of whatever this is," I said. "What exactly is going on here?"
"Well, someone genuinely thought it'd be a good idea to download Cool Math and Art Studio for Kids 5 onto the work computers, and grabbed a virus filled version off some sketchy website. Said someone also apparently decided that these cords would be good to try basket weaving with." Pippi sighed.
"Penteldtam?" Evy said.
"I didn't want to call anyone out," Pippi said.
"It's fine, he's very call out-able." Evy said.
"Fine, Principal Penteldtam did it while everyone else is out sick and I was out of the room," Pippi said. "'Trust me, it's a really fun game!' All because he forgot his email password. Anyways! What brings you two over to my neck of the woods?"
I handed Pippi the signup sheet and told her about the game.
"You wish to unleash that particular beast?" Pippi asked, pressing up her glasses again, this time seemingly just for dramatic effect.
"I most certainly do." I said.
"Then you got yourself a player." Pippi said.
