Rising Shards

“Kalei No. 8” (63.4) (Kalei)

"Leave this creature alone,"

Amara had no idea it was me, so I didn't take the creature thing personally. She showed up in just in time, saving my ass from getting obliterated by someone named Chickadee Girliepop. My ghost would have to haunt...myself I guess if I went out that embarrassingly.

"Why are you here?" P.D. asked.

"I had trouble sleeping, so I was searching for berries and mushrooms in the wilderness, that usually calms my mind," Amara said. "I found this strange place, and couldn't stand by when I saw the fight."

P.D. kept her cool. Caeda, however, reacted to Amara's arrival like a five-year-old getting told she had to pick up her toys.

"You're not part of this," Caeda said. "You're not a devil! You didn't take anything, go away! Stay out of it!"

"Just relax," Chickadee said. "That thing's just a void monster! We've got this!"

"I am no stranger to fighting void monsters," Amara said. "I don't know who or what this is, but I know it's not a void monster. Which means you're hurting something innocent."

"You look at this beast and see something innocent?" Caeda asked.

"I do," Amara said. "Plus, you have Aira locked up over there, and...is that Tokickaman? What's going on here?"

"Nothing you need to worry about," P.D. said. A wave of shadows from her hand was blocked by a barrage of lasers from Amara.

Amara weaved through attacks from all three devils, gracefully dancing through them. She got close enough to P.D. and reached forward, fingertips brushing against the dome part of her helmet before she pulled back, sending out lasers that didn't hurt P.D., but reflected away, hitting Caeda. She leapt away from P.D. before the helmeted girl could counter.

"Leave me alone!" Caeda said in the whiniest voice imaginable for someone in the middle of a huge brawl.

"No," Amara said. "I've lost to you twice already, I'm not losing a third time!"

Caeda tried to use her elevator power on Amara again, putting her in a box made of energy and lifting her up, but Amara just used it to get a boost jumping, leaping forward to kick Caeda in the face. Chickadee grabbed Amara by her tail in midair and tried to fling her, but Amara fired another set of lasers, one knocking Chickadee back, and another bouncing off of P.D.'s helmet and hitting Caeda again.

"Stop doing that!" Caeda said.

I didn't want to just sit around and watch, so I decided to rip off Caeda's attack basically and rose columns of ice from the ground. They weren't sharp enough to like stab them, but they did get Caeda and Chickadee knocked over. As soon as Caeda hit the ground, her elevators around Aira and Syval fell apart.

"No!" Caeda said, sitting upright and trying to use her powers. Nothing happened, though.

What did happen a second later was a rumble in the ground. It was familiar, it felt like every time Marmalade used her earth powers. Caeda and Chickadee were flung into the air. I looked around but didn't see Marms, but I didn't want to let whoever did that's move go to waste. A ball of ice swatted Chickadee and Caeda away, leaving only P.D. left standing.

"You're outnumbered now," Syval said, approaching with smugness that someone who just got stuck in a box for like fifteen minutes probably shouldn't have had.

P.D. scoffed, then snapped twice. She did some weird hand gesture, pointing at Aira and Syval, firing two tiny attacks of her energy at them. It looked kinda like she just shot two peas at them effectively, and for a second I thought it was a failed attempt of whatever she was trying to do. Then a second later I felt a lurch.

"Heh," Aira said. "That feels..."

Then she and Syval started screaming. I didn't know what to do, especially in a big monstrous form as Aira and Syval clutched their heads, screaming worse than I heard from a beam chasers injury compilation.

Wavy energy crackled around them, an aura like something with low video quality wanted out of them. Out of each a humanoid form tried to break out, and both started moving away from the rest of us. P.D. just watched.

"I thought as much," she said quietly.

Amara locked eyes with me, concern as Aira and Syval picked up the pace, still writhing and screaming but now full on running away.

"I'm so sorry!" Amara said, rushing to follow Aira and Syval. "But they need me more right now! I'll come back for you!"

"It's OK!" I yelled, but I'm sure she didn't understand that.

"So it's down to just us," P.D. said, stretching her neck and rubbing her shoulder.

Whatever cool comeback I would have come up with was irrelevant, but I did find myself wanting to throw one out there.

Instead, I just bashed my head against hers as hard as I could. The dome part of the helmet made a warbly noise as she fell over. She landed with a crack, and a chunk of the dome of her helmet came down. She quickly rose to her feet, and I got my first glimpse at the girl behind the mask, only able to see one of her eyes, which glowed with a pinkish energy as she stared a dagger into me.
