Chapter 913: Chapter 898

Dragging his heavy steps, Old Xu knocked on the door.

"Who’s there?!" A man’s deep voice came from inside. Old Xu immediately replied, "It’s me, Lei Zi!"

"Even... Old Xu!!"

Hurriedly removing the bolt, Lei Tong pulled open the door, but upon seeing the injuries on Old Xu’s face, he couldn’t help but exclaim, "Old Xu, you... was it those little bastards who hit you?"

Hearing Lei Tong’s words, Old Xu immediately pushed him in the chest, slipped inside, and closed the door behind him.

"Are you crazy! Shouting that loud! Don’t forget what we’re here for!"

"You... what do you mean by that? Do you have some purpose for being here?" Demmi, who had just finished wiping Zhao Lina’s body and was about to change the water, stumbled upon Old Xu’s "slip of the tongue."

Old Xu, caught off guard by his own anxiety, had overlooked Demmi’s presence. Now that the situation had unfolded, he could only cover it up by saying, "Demmi, don’t get the wrong idea. What else could we be here for, but to make a living? Haha, just didn’t expect... sigh,"

Showing a look of disappointment, Old Xu sighed sorrowfully, "Under the eaves, one has to bow their head. Lei Zi, stop using words like ’little bastards’ in the future, or you’ll lose your head."

These words, combined with Old Xu’s timely expression, quickly dispelled Demmi’s rising doubts.

She nodded in understanding. In fact, Demmi couldn’t quite grasp why Old Xu and Lei Tong would want to settle down in such a place.

If it were her, she would never do something so foolish.

But after thinking it over, Demmi came to terms with it.

After all, Derek had mentioned before that bringing these people was to solve his issue of going out to gather supplies.

Because no matter how you look at it, constantly going out every day is too risky for both Derek and Demmi.

You never know what might happen tomorrow. Derek could end up dead outside, or those Japanese students might unilaterally break the agreement.

So, considering all this, Demmi gave up on persuading Old Xu and Lei Tong to leave.

This can’t be called selfish on Demmi’s part; it’s simply human nature.

He needs Old Xu and Lei Tong to take on the risks for his loved ones. Although this approach seems a bit sinister, others dying is better than himself or his loved ones dying.

"It’s okay! You might not be accustomed to it yet since you just arrived, but you’ll get used to it over time! Although, in many ways... haha, overall, it’s indeed much better than being out there with the zombies," Demmi said, trying her best to convince Old Xu and Lei Tong to stay.

Considering Old Xu’s current state, even though Demmi was unclear about his experiences, she was sure his injuries weren’t just from a tumble or a bump.

She worried that because of this, the man before her might develop fears, and leave the school tomorrow, never to return.

If her worries were to come true, Derek and she would undoubtedly be implicated.

The ruthlessness of those "Japanese" bastards would ensure they’d never let them go.

"Indeed! Demmi is right. Where is truly comfortable nowadays? Wandering outside for so long, we’ve seen too much of the worst. Currently, I don’t have many demands, as long as we have a safe place to stay, a bit of food each day, and some water—I’m content."

Hearing this, Demmi’s anxious heart slightly eased. She quickly chimed in, "Then you were right to stay here, we have food and drinks, but it’s a bit limited, mainly because it’s usually just Derek. But when you join the activities tomorrow, the resources we bring back will increase accordingly."

Old Xu nodded with a smile. He wasn’t naïve and could decipher the hidden agenda in Demmi’s words.

Will resources really increase by moving together? Are Japanese students that kind-hearted? Even if those little bastards were suddenly charitable, how would the increased resources suffice for so many people?

Don’t forget, just as resources increase, so do the numbers. Supply and demand balance out, so nothing fundamentally changes.

Old Xu didn’t believe Demmi could survive for so long in such a harsh environment and still not understand such a basic principle, so it’s clear she was playing dumb with a purpose.

Nevertheless, Old Xu didn’t point it out; on the contrary, he understood the girl’s mindset.

When it comes to survival, sacrificing strangers isn’t much of a moral fault, and Old Xu, in his current state, would also make decisions to protect the Survivor Squad.

"Makes sense! Hearing Demmi say that really puts my heart at ease." He chuckled sincerely. At that moment, Old Xu was like a big brother from the Lin Family, albeit his swollen face made him look somewhat disheveled.

"Here! This is some fever medicine, go give it to Xiao Zhao quickly. Oh, and remember to split it. Use half first and see the situation for the rest!"

Having been pinched and withheld by Jiang Kou, Old Xu only had this much left in reserve.

So, to stay safe, he decided to give Zhao Lina half a pill for now because, according to Old Xu’s assessment, her fever was mostly due to malnutrition and weakness.

It’s not viral, so with some medication support, the fever should subside quickly.

Of course, these judgments are Old Xu’s own, as he’s not a doctor. He’s good at treating wounds in the battlefield but lacks the expertise in diagnosis and treatment.

But no matter what, Old Xu knows that to truly solve the issue, it has to be by eliminating all the "Japanese" students. Without doing that, everything else is futile.

The matter of stomach medicine was handled by Zhao Lina, giving Old Xu a chance to finally rest.

"Here, drink some water!" Derek had somehow appeared with a cup.

Taking it with a natural motion, the warm steam from the cup brought a bit of warmth to the freezing cold room.

"Did you have a fight with those guys?" Derek inquired without directly confronting him.

Old Xu shrugged his shoulders. Honestly, even he was unsure if what just happened could be called a fight.

"Did you win?" Derek guessed from the medicines Old Xu had returned with.

"Haha, barely, perhaps!" Old Xu replied with a bittersweet smile, thinking that this was probably the most pathetic victory he’d ever achieved in his life.

"Winning is good! But..." Derek’s hesitation was palpable to Old Xu.

"Little Derek, if you have something to say, just say it. We’re on the same boat now, no need to hide anything. We’re going to live together after all. There’s nothing we can’t talk about."

With those words, Old Xu consciously extended an invitation to Derek.

Derek seemed genuinely surprised by Old Xu’s words and evidently hadn’t considered the question.

In his view, attempting to escape from a "Japanese" controlled school was an impossible task. (To be continued. If you like this work, you’re welcome to vote for it on Qidian (qidian.com), as your support is my greatest motivation. Mobile users, please visit m.qidian.com to read.)
