Chapter 941: Chapter 926: Ambush Battle (12)
Five Zombies, three taken down, two left.
This result no longer posed much of a threat for Old Xu. He quickly scrambled up from the floor, Shattered Stone Dagger in hand, taking up a fighting stance.
Because the wrist rope was still attached, it wasn’t easy for him to take the initiative, so he simply waited for the beasts to come to him.
The two Zombies didn’t show the slightest anger over their buddies’ tragic death. The only thing in their eyes was greed and hunger for the delicious meal that was Old Xu.
Watching the Zombies close in, Old Xu’s expression stayed steady. When one got close enough, he suddenly sidestepped, then followed through with a shove, sending it sprawling before rushing the remaining one.
His hand once again pounded down on the Zombie’s skull like a pile driver, blow after blow, and very soon the Zombie’s cranium burst open with a gaping hole.
After landing the hit, Old Xu didn’t pause. He aimed at the Zombie that was struggling to get back up and gave it a hard shove.
The beast whose head had just been blown apart toppled right on cue, its falling body landing squarely on the Zombie on the ground below.
The ground Zombie, crushed again under the weight of the head-shot one, was forced into another intimate contact with the floor.
Old Xu strode up to the ground Zombie, his cold eyes swept over the still struggling beast, then he lifted his right foot high and stamped down hard.
"Puchi!" Accompanied by the wet crack of skull and brain matter exploding, Old Xu finished the hunt for all five Zombies.
"Hoo!" He let out a breath. Right now five corpses were sprawled all over the balcony, and a few streaks of sorrow inevitably rose in Old Xu’s heart.
By common sense, as a soldier Old Xu should have long since gotten used to such bloody scenes, but beneath the iron-blooded exterior, Old Xu was still just a person. From the very first day of enlistment, the instructors had warned them over and over: never forget why you started.
Yes, on the battlefield, you must be cold-blooded, because if you’re not, it means you die.
But that doesn’t mean you have to become a killing machine. That’s also why Huaxia’s soldiers can make their presence felt across the world and inspire fear worldwide.
They’re not simple cold-blooded killers; they’re flesh-and-blood men. The reason they’re strong isn’t because their killing skills are so terrifying, nor because harsh training has numbed them. It’s because each of them carries a belief in his heart: the awareness that he can give his life for his country and his people at any time.
Right now, what Old Xu killed were ultimately Huaxia people. Even though they had mutated into "corpses," at the end of the day they had been ordinary students.
He believed each of them had parents and family. Those parents must be, like Old Zhao, in some corner of this world praying for their children, praying that Heaven will protect them, praying for the day they can be reunited.
"Sigh!" He let out another heavy breath. As the saying goes, the dead are gone, the living must go on.
The dead can’t come back to life. After a brief sigh, Old Xu immediately pulled himself together.
After all, on the battlefield, excessive pity only makes you indecisive and brings no other benefit.
He took his gaze off the corpses. To make sure all the Zombies had really been cleared out, Old Xu deliberately tossed a few pebbles to lightly tap against the wall.
He controlled the force of the bricks and stone striking just right—enough not to alert anyone downstairs, but still able to draw the Zombies’ attention on the rooftop.
He waited in silence for over five minutes; the rooftop stayed quiet. Only then did Old Xu relax and untie the thin rope from his wrist, fastening it instead to one of the corpses.
The main reason he did this was that he had misjudged the rooftop’s cross-sectional area.
Simply put, his current position was exactly on the opposite side from where Old Lin and the others had parked the vehicles.
In other words, if he didn’t remove the wrist rope, he wouldn’t be able to send the action-confirmation signal to Old Lin and the rest.
But if he just took the rope off and left it, then if anything happened downstairs, Old Xu wouldn’t get Derek’s warning that something had come out.
So, weighing everything, Old Xu had no choice but to tie the wrist rope to the right arm of a corpse. That way he could immediately move around to the back side of the building to signal Old Lin’s group, and still use the movement of the Zombie’s arm to detect any situation at the base of the building. It was a flexible tactic that killed two birds with one stone.
Once he finished tying it off, Old Xu gave the thin rope a couple of hard tugs to make sure the Zombie’s arm could still move.
After confirming, he rushed off without wasting a second, heading toward the street where Old Lin and the others had parked.
Once he reached position, he immediately raised his eyes to scan the distance, and soon spotted the neatly lined-up convoy and Jianghuai vehicle about 700 meters away.
Old Xu pulled out the rag strip tied at his waist and took out his lighter, trying to set the cloth on fire.
Unfortunately, the north wind was just too strong. A regular lighter simply couldn’t ignite anything properly in this midnight chill.
Luckily, Old Xu was experienced. He immediately thought of the dead corpses—everyone knows fat is the best accelerant—so Old Xu decided to render some corpse grease to help the fire along.
"Hey, Old Lin, what time is it now?" Hua Biao bent inside the transport truck compartment and asked in a low voice.
The atmosphere in the transport truck was solemn; this murderous tension had been hanging over them for hours.
Including Old Lin, almost every member of the action squad wore a grim expression.
"Two in the morning." Old Lin glanced at the time and replied just as coolly.
"Don’t tell me something’s gone wrong?" By the agreed plan, Old Xu should’ve lit the signal fire around midnight, but so much time had passed and the rooftop was still pitch black, not a single glimmer of light.
"Probably not." Tang Xiaoquan didn’t want everyone getting distracted. He thought for a moment, then explained, "Old Xu doesn’t have a watch over there, so he can’t track the exact time. Also, the reason Old Xu hasn’t moved yet is probably that the Japanese bastards didn’t party the way we expected. Either way, we keep waiting. As long as we get a signal before three, the operation’s still on schedule."
Based on the numbers Old Xu had given earlier, Tang Xiaoquan had calculated that from the parking area to the school, they’d need at most an hour. After that, they’d still have a full hour to take care of the Japanese students. Finishing the fight before dawn would be no problem at all.
After hearing Tang Xiaoquan’s explanation, Hua Biao nodded lightly, but he still felt a lingering worry about what might be happening at the school.
And right at that moment, Old Lin, who’d been staring at the rooftop this whole time, suddenly barked in a low shout, "Hey! Hey! Quick, look, there’s light! Firelight!!"
As soon as he spoke, Tang Xiaoquan, who’d been talking, whipped his head around, and Hua Biao bounced up from his seat like he’d been shocked, then leaned forward toward the front of the truck to peer out.
Following the direction of Old Lin’s pointing finger, they really did see a glow on the rooftop.
"Binoculars, quick, give me the binoculars!" Hua Biao slapped Old Lin hard on the shoulder. Old Lin of course understood why Hua Biao was in such a rush and didn’t dare dawdle, hastily passing the binoculars to him.
Once Hua Biao raised them to his eyes, Tang Xiaoquan couldn’t wait and pressed, "Well? What’s Old Xu saying?"
Hua Biao didn’t rush to answer. He waited quietly for a moment, carefully making out the signal, then finally slowly replied, "He... he says... e-everything is normal, the Japanese students are already asleep, the Guard is slack tonight, we... we can move!!"
