LILITH’s POV

The estate felt different.

Lilith could not explain it, but the air was heavier. The pack moved differently...slower, quieter. Like everyone had used something up two nights ago and had not gotten it back yet.

Like the entire pack took a day off to get everything in place before they started running the pack again after the full moon.

She walked through the main corridor toward the dining hall.

Wolves she passed looked at her. Not hostile and not friendly either.

One omega stopped completely and stared until her companion pulled her forward.

Lilith kept walking.

Agnes was waiting at the table with tea already poured. and she saw that she looked tired.

Lilith sat down.

"Did you sleep?" Lilith asked.

Agnes shook her head.

"Full moon nights are not sleeping nights." she said.

"Why? But it is a day after already, so why?" Lilith said.

"The pack runs. The elders watch. The young ones shift for the first time if the moon calls them. It is celebration and duty all at once."

Lilith wrapped her hands around the teacup.

"And this year?"

Agnes met her eyes.

"This year was different."

"How?"

Agnes poured herself more tea before answering.

"The entire pack didn’t know until yesterday that their Alphas chain themselves every full moon."

She looked at Lilith confused face before she continued.

"The whole pack felt it through the mindlink. Three anchors. Three wolves at the edge. Alpha Kael holding because of you. Alpha Rhen holding because of you. Alpha Zev nearly breaking his restrain because he could not reach you."

"I did not..."Lilith wanted to defend herself but Agnes waved her hand.

"You did nothing wrong, child. You saved them by being exactly where you were."

Lilith set the cup down."The pack knows?" she asked.

"The pack has always known. They felt Alpha Kael mark you days ago. During the full moon, they felt all three wolves fighting the curse and winning."

"Winning?"

Agnes smiled. "They held the chains. That is winning."

Lilith didn’t know what to say, so she just nodded her head and then picked up her cup.

A maid came in with bread and set it down without a word. She glanced at Lilith. Lilith looked back at her, and the omega quickly dropped her face and left the kitchen.

"They are watching me."

"They are trying to understand you. You are wolfless, but their Alphas are bonded to you. You have no scent marker from Alpha Rhen or Alpha Zev, but both wolves nearly tore themselves apart trying to reach you. It does not make sense to them yet."

"Does it make sense to you?"

Agnes leaned back.

"You are their mate. That is all the sense I need." she replied back.

Lilith ate half a piece of bread and couldn’t finish it. Her stomach was too tight, so she excused herself shortly after and Agnes did not stop her.

***

Lilith walked outside.

The clearing where the full moon ceremony had been was still marked. Ash from the fire. Flattened grass where wolves had run. Lanterns still hanging from the trees.

She stood at the edge and stared.

"They ran all night." A voice said from behind her.

Lilith turned.

Sera was standing behind her. Her hair pulled back. Her eyes shadowed and still looking very beautiful.

"I did not hear you," Lilith said.

"You were thinking too loud," Sera said.

Sera came to stand beside her. They both looked at the clearing.

"It was a good moon. Strong. The young ones shifted clean. No one was hurt."

"Agnes said it was different this year." Lilith said.

Sera glanced at her. "It was." she said.

"Because of me?" Lilith asked.

"Because of them. Because they chose chains over instinct. Because Alpha Kael found an anchor and the other two did not, and everyone felt what that imbalance does to their wolf under the full moon."

Lilith looked down and Sera moved closer to her.

"You do not understand what you did for them." Sera said.

"I stayed in my room. I did nothing." Lilith responded.

"Exactly. You trusted them. You stayed where they asked you to stay. You let them protect you even when it cost them everything to do it."

Lilith felt her throat tighten.

Sera put a hand on her shoulder.

"The pack is not judging you, Lilith. They are trying to decide if you are strong enough to survive what is coming."

"What is coming?" Lilith asked.

Sera’s hand tightened.

"Two more bonds. Two more markings. And whatever happens when the curse finally breaks."

Lilith looked at her.

"You think I am not strong enough?"

Sera smiled. "I think you are stronger than you know. But I also think you have no idea what you are walking into."

She let go and turned to leave but she stopped after taking a few steps.

"Alpha Nicholas is looking for you. He is in the south garden."

Then she walked away.

Lilith stood there for a long time.

The ash from the fire was still warm under her feet.

***

She went to find Nicholas later on, and she saw him sitting on the stone bench near the roses.

His head tipped back. Eyes closed.

He looked exhausted.

Lilith walked up quietly.

He opened his eyes before she said anything.

"Kael felt you coming," he said.

She sat down beside him. "You still look terrible," she said.

"Thank you." Nicholas said with a smile.

"I mean it." she said.

He turned his head to look at her. "I know." he replied with a serious face.

"The pack is talking." Lilith said.

"I know." Nicholas said. "Agnes told me that the maids have been staring at you and murmuring all day."

He looked at her. "They felt everything that happened during the full moon. The mindlink does not hide much during a full moon. Emotions run too high. Instincts are too sharp."

"What did they feel?" she asked.

Nicholas reached for her hand. She gave it to him and he held it carefully.

"They felt three Alphas choose chains over freedom, and they felt us win."

Lilith’s chest hurt.

"Agnes said the same thing."

"Because it is true." Nicholas said and pulled her closer.

She leaned into his side. His arm came around her.

"What happens now?" she asked.

"Now we finish what we started." Nicholas replied, his hand patting her haed.

"The bonds?" she asked.

"Yes the bonds." he answered.

She tipped her head back to look at him.

"How much time do you have left?" she asked.

"Six weeks. Maybe less." he replied.

"And if we do not finish in time?" she looked at him.

Nicholas’s jaw tightened. "Then you will watch us go feral, and there will be nothing you can do to stop it."

She felt her heart tightened at the mention of them going feral.

"Then we finish it," she said.

He looked down at her.

Kael stirred, as if voicing its agreement to the plan.

Nicholas kissed her forehead. "Then we finish it." he replied.

They sat together until the sun moved overhead.

The pack kept moving around them, watching and waiting as if it was deciding what should come next.
