"You have no right to question her judgment Mike," Wren said sharply.

"I have every right when she’s bonding herself to the family that might be keeping secret about her father’s death from her!" Mike’s voice was rising now and several people in the café turned to look. "Do you even know what you’ve done, Lilith? Do you know what they are? What they have done?"

"They’re my mates," Lilith said, her voice shaking with anger. "And they’re investigating what happened to my father. They told me that from the beginning."

"And you believe them?" Mike laughed bitterly. "You believe the Blackwoods brothers are going to tell you the truth about what happened that night?"

"What night?" Lilith demanded. "What are you talking about?"

"The night your father died. Ask them. Ask them where they were. Ask them what they know. Ask them if he truly committed the sin they accused him of." Mike stood up and threw some bills on the table. "And when they lie to you, because they will lie.....you come find me. Because I’m the only one who’s going to tell you the truth."

He turned and walked out of the café, leaving Lilith and Wren sitting in stunned silence.

"Lilith...." Wren started.

"Did you know?" Lilith’s voice was barely above a whisper. "Did you know he was going to say that?"

"No. I swear I didn’t. I just wanted to show you what I found about your mother. I had no idea Mike was...." Wren reached across the table but Lilith pulled her hand back. "He’s angry, Lilith. After the news about you being sent to the brothers started spreading, He’s changed.....I think.....We all know that he was close to your father and he’s been obsessed with finding answers for weeks, hearing the news might have fueled his anger. But that doesn’t mean what he’s saying is true."

Lilith felt tears burning behind her eyes but she refused to let them fall. "The brothers told me they’re investigating. They told me they’re looking into my father’s death and try to clear his name, and they also promised to look into my mother’s family. They’ve been honest about that."

"Then trust them," Wren said gently. "Trust your mates over Mike’s accusations."

Lilith wanted to. Wanted to believe that Nicholas and Sebastian and Lucian would never lie to her about something this important. But Mike’s words kept echoing in her head.

Ask them if they were there the night your father died. Ask them if he truly committed the sin they accused him of.

What did that even mean?

"I need to go," Lilith said, standing up.

"Wait.....let me show you what I found about your mother...."

"Later." Lilith grabbed her purse and headed for the door. "I’ll call you later, Wren. I just need to think."

She pushed out into the afternoon sunlight and immediately felt Sebastian through the bond, already moving toward her from where he’d been watching. He appeared at her side within seconds, his hand going to her elbow.

"What happened?" he asked, his eyes scanning her face. "You’re upset."

"Mike was there."

Sebastian’s expression darkened. "What did he say?"

"He..." Lilith shook her head. "Can we just go home? Please?"

Sebastian studied her for a moment and then nodded, guiding her toward where they’d parked. Through the bond she felt his concern, his protective instincts flaring, but he didn’t push. Just stayed close as they drove back to the estate in silence.

***

That evening, Lilith found herself in Sebastian’s room, the one he’d moved into temporarily while his original room was being repaired, sitting on the bed and trying to process everything Derek had said.

The brothers had told her they were investigating her father’s death. They’d been upfront about that. So why did Mike’s accusations feel like they were hiding something?

Ask them if they were there the night your father died.

Sebastian emerged from the bathroom, his hair still damp from the shower, and found her sitting there lost in thought. He sat down beside her and took her hand.

"You’ve been quiet all afternoon," he said. "Talk to me."

Lilith looked at him.....at the face she’d come to trust, at the bond mark on his chest that matched the one on her throat, and made a decision.

She was going to trust them. For now.

"How well did you know my father before the alliance meeting?" she asked quietly.

Sebastian went very still. "Why are you asking?"

"Because I need to know. You said you were investigating what really happened that night, what happened to him. So you must have known him. How well?"

Sebastian was quiet for a long moment, and through the bond she felt his careful consideration of how much to tell her. Finally he said, "Well enough i guess. He was a reputable Beta"

Lilith’s breath caught. "Really?"

’’Yes’’ Sebastian replied.

"How is the investigation going? Have you found anything about the anonymous posts?"

"I’ll discuss with Nicholas tomorrow," Sebastian said. "Get the latest update. I know they’ve been tracking the IP addresses and cross-referencing forum activity, but I don’t know what they’ve found recently."

Lilith nodded and tried to ignore the small voice in the back of her head whispering that he was being evasive. That he wasn’t telling her everything.

But she had two completed bonds with these men. She had chosen them. She had to trust them.

"Okay," she said finally. "Thank you for telling me."

Sebastian pulled her against his chest and she went willingly, letting him hold her while Rhen purred contentedly through the bond. "We’re going to find out what really happened that night and also clear your father, Lilith. I promise you that."

"I know."

Lilith closed her eyes and tried to believe him. Tried to push Mike’s accusations out of her mind and focus on the bonds humming beneath her skin, solid, real and permanent.

She had chosen them.

She had to trust them.

But somewhere in the back of her mind, a seed of doubt had been planted.

And she had a terrible feeling it was going to grow.
