Sage of Humanity

Chapter 2212 - 2210: Bonds

Inside the grass hut, on the wooden bed, Little Butterfly cried and struggled.

The one-eyed bandit laughed heartily, one hand gripping Little Butterfly's neck to restrain her, the other tearing at her clothes, revealing large patches of snowy white after just a few tugs.

Little Butterfly's heart felt dead. Just then, a shadow suddenly stood behind the bandit.

In front of the window frame, under the moonlight, that shadow appeared like a grim reaper, enveloped in a humid, bloody aura.

"Husband!" Little Butterfly saw this familiar figure, her eyes bursting with surprise and joy.

The one-eyed bandit was startled, and just as he turned his head, a flash of a blade swept past.

The bandit immediately raised his hand to clutch his neck, his body staggering back, blood seeping through his fingers, a hoarse sound escaping his throat: "You..."

He had just uttered one word when he collapsed softly to the ground, his body convulsing.

Little Butterfly curled up at the corner of the bed, sniffing the overwhelming scent of blood, trembling all over. Ever since she was young, she had never killed a chicken, let alone seen a dead person.

Clang... a sound, the machete fell, waking the panicked Little Butterfly.

She quickly looked towards the shadow in front of the bed.

"Little Butterfly..." Lu Ye's voice was extremely weak, due to excessive blood loss, "Run away!"

The fact that he managed to hold on and come in to deal with the bandit intending to violate Little Butterfly was all due to his strong will; he was unwilling for this kind and gentle woman to suffer any harm.

After speaking, his body went limp, collapsing to the ground, where a dark red pool spread beneath him.

"Husband!" Little Butterfly finally came to her senses, crying out as she rushed over, supporting Lu Ye's upper body into her embrace, but what she saw made her pupils shrink to pinpoints.

At Lu Ye's neck, there was a huge gash, fresh blood trickling out.

Such an injury was beyond saving.

"Husband, don't die!" Little Butterfly felt like her heart was shattering, the pain as if being twisted by a knife.

"Run!" Lu Ye raised a hand, wanting to touch Little Butterfly's face one last time, but couldn't muster any strength.

"Little Butterfly won't leave!" Little Butterfly cried like rain, stubbornly shaking her head.

Her eyes suddenly glanced at the machete nearby, she reached for it, placing it horizontally on her fair neck, and with teary eyes, looked at Lu Ye's gradually clouding eyes, showing a poignant smile: "Husband, wait for me, Little Butterfly is coming to join you!"

The machete fell, blood splattered, Little Butterfly holding Lu Ye, her whole body lying on top of him.

The two bodies gradually turned cold.

Almost at the same time as Little Butterfly's breath disappeared, everything around froze, and then began to shatter.

However, an invisible and formless bond gradually took root.

Life and death, emotion and love, are most prone to breeding bonds. When this invisible bond reaches a certain extent, the stronger party can dominate the weaker one. By then, let alone the mere mystery of the Crane Wings Array Runes, all of Lu Ye's secrets from childhood would be exposed before the Insect Matriarch.

This is the terror of the Divine Origin Illusory Sea.

Such a method is even more solid than the Blood Race's Blood Slave marking, allowing the Blood Race to plant agents within the human race.

Similarly, the Insect Race can achieve the same purpose through the Insect Matriarch's Divine Origin Illusory Sea.

Yet few Insect Matriarchs do this because it also affects them. Utilizing the Divine Origin Illusory Sea to create incredibly realistic illusory realms, even though incomplete soul bodies enter the Illusory Sea, only the Secondary Soul, when reintegrated, the experiences of the Secondary Soul within the Illusory Realm still touch the main body. Because in the illusory realm, the dedication of the Secondary Soul is genuine, with no deception. Only this way can it be real enough!

The old illusory realm shattered; a new illusory realm was simultaneously derived. For the Insect Matriarch, even using a part of her mind to create an illusory realm captivating for one who has Entered the Path was incredibly simple.

Precisely because it's simple enough, she chose this way to probe the mysteries of the Crane Wings Array, as she wasn't particularly interested in Lu Ye himself. For someone who has Entered the Path, no matter how brilliant his performance, it's actually hard to catch her eye.

Misty Sect, the moment Lu Ye opened his eyes, a vaguely familiar figure appeared in his vision.

"Junior Brother?" That figure drew closer, a delicate fragrance immediately surrounding his nose, utterly refreshing.

As his vision gradually focused, in front of him was a face as lovely as a flower, extremely enchanting, yet appearing pure and captivating. The merging of two entirely different temperaments not only didn't seem odd but instead added an exotic allure.

Looking at this face, Lu Ye's heart inexplicably twitched, piercing with pain.

"Ah, it's great, Junior Brother, you're finally awake!" A voice full of joy was laden with relief, "Hold on a second, I'll go call the master!"

As she turned around, her hand was grabbed.

Lu Ye dazedly looked at her, his grip firm.

"Junior Brother, what's wrong? Why are you crying? Does it hurt somewhere?"

Only then did Lu Ye belatedly realize that his vision was blurring again. Vague images surged in his mind, scenes of the woman before him laying over him, her body slowly turning cold, scenes he dared not recall, unwilling to remember.

"Sister Dark Butterfly!" Lu Ye softly called.

"Here I am." The voice was very gentle, Dark Butterfly sat by the bed, placing her other hand over his hand on the back.

"Stay with me for a while." Lu Ye spoke.

"Okay." Dark Butterfly's face was full of indulgence, brushing aside his disheveled hair on his forehead, then scolded: "Next time, don't be so reckless; that was a Level 5 demon beast, not something you can handle right now."

"Got it." Lu Ye replied.

This time the injury was not serious. Lu Ye recovered after resting for most of a month.

Misty Sect is a minor sect with just over ten people from top to bottom within the sect. Dark Butterfly is the senior sister and the most powerful one of this generation. She is gentle in temperament, kind-hearted, and takes great care of the younger brothers.

Moreover, she is extremely beautiful, naturally attracting affection from her junior brothers who secretly compete among themselves.

Lu Ye is also one of them. This time, he wanted to go into the mountains to collect some herbs for Senior Sister Dark Butterfly. Unexpectedly, he encountered a powerful demon beast and almost couldn't make it back alive.

Ever since he woke up that day, Lu Ye felt that something was not quite right, but he couldn't pinpoint exactly what was wrong. Only during several midnight dreams did that familiar figure lying on his body slowly turn cold, making his heart tremble.

The junior brothers continue to compete, hoping that one day they will win the heart of the beauty. Lu Ye, however, didn't get involved. The fright from the dream made him somewhat fearful, but he didn't know what he was afraid of.

Day after day passed.

On this day, Lu Ye went into the mountains to train, but was once again in danger. Despite fighting fiercely, he was still no match for the demon beast. In the almost desperate moment, a beautiful figure appeared from the side.

It was Dark Butterfly.

She was also training nearby; after hearing the commotion, she came to investigate and found Lu Ye in danger, immediately stepping in to assist.

Her strength was much greater than Lu Ye's, so naturally, she easily dealt with that demon beast.

Lu Ye was filled with gratitude and was about to thank her when Dark Butterfly's expression suddenly changed, and she turned to look in one direction. There appeared another demon beast, presumably the same kind as the one just killed, but larger in size and with a much stronger aura.

Lu Ye realized they were in trouble; this demon beast must be the parent of the slain one, and wouldn't let the matter rest since its child was killed.

"Junior brother!" Dark Butterfly called softly.

"Here!" Lu Ye replied solemnly.

"Return to the sect for reinforcements, I will hold it off!"

Lu Ye's heart sank! He knew Dark Butterfly's strength, and now she asked him to seek help from the sect, which clearly indicated that Dark Butterfly wasn't confident about dealing with this demon beast.

"Go quickly!" Dark Butterfly shouted tenderly, then darted towards the demon beast, and within seconds, the battle commenced.

Lu Ye initially intended to rush in to assist, but upon witnessing the demon beast's ferocity, he knew he would only be a burden to Dark Butterfly. Immediately, he said, "Senior Sister, be careful, I will hurry back!"

Having said that, he turned and ran back to the sect.

Going back and forth took about one hour, but when Lu Ye returned with the sect master, there was no longer any commotion from the battle.

In the distance, only a speck of white came into his view, and Dark Butterfly's attire was white.

At this moment, the blood on that whiteness was extraordinarily glaring!

He couldn't believe his eyes, as he stepped forward, what he saw was the shattered body of Dark Butterfly!

In his mind, the image of the body lying on him gradually going cold surfaced again, merging with the scene before him, and Lu Ye's heart twisted like a knife!

Dark Butterfly was dead!

Since then, none of the junior brothers treated Lu Ye kindly.

"Why did you flee?"

"Why didn't you fight alongside Senior Sister Dark Butterfly?"

"If you hadn't fled, Senior Sister wouldn't have died!"

"It should have been you who died!"

...

After Dark Butterfly's death, the junior brothers became divided and disaffected. A few years later, the master passed away, and Misty Sect withered overnight.

Each junior brother went his separate way; only Lu Ye remained alone, guarding the mountain gate.

In a daze, he didn't know how many years had passed. The passionate young man gradually became an old man, until one day, he walked haltingly to a lonely grave, slowly sat down, and looked at the tombstone in front of the grave. The word Dark Butterfly pierced his heart.

The confused mind finally had a moment of clarity.

His eyes became moist and red, the hunched body leaned on the lonely grave, filled with self-reproach.

If that day he hadn't left, but fought alongside Senior Sister Dark Butterfly, she surely wouldn't have died!

It really should have been him who died!

The gentle breeze swept by, the desolate mountain wilderness, and the hunched figure never stood up again.

In the intense emotional turmoil, the invisible and intangible ties deepened.

...

"Beloved, stay here, I'm leaving." In front of the wooden house, Lu Ye reluctantly gazed at the person before him.

Little Butterfly's eyes were red: "Husband, go, the journey is long, travel safely."

"When I rank near the top of the list, I will surely come to fetch you." Lu Ye tightened the book case on his back, looked at Little Butterfly one last time, turned around, and left. When he had walked far enough and turned back, the familiar figure was still standing at the door, gazing afar. It seemed she waved her hand from afar, smiling, to reassure him.
