In the bone pool, Lu Ye strode forward, weaving his way through one figure after another.
His arrival didn't stir up the slightest ripple. These bone chalices seemed utterly unaware of him; they didn't even have the intention to spare him a single glance. Every face was withered, lifelessly numb.
Lu Ye's heart was filled with sorrow.
What he mourned wasn't the tragic fate of these bone chalices, but the way they had resigned themselves to it.
These people weren't shackled in any way, yet they still just sat here, bitterly cultivating without pause, contributing their strength to Edgeless City.
This was a numbness that didn't even have the courage to die. Endless ages of enslavement and captivity had already stripped these people of their bloodlust.
The bottom of the bone pool and the walls around it were covered in complex, obscure patterns. With a casual glance, Lu Ye immediately noticed traces similar to a Spirit Gathering Array among them.
This was clearly laid down by Edgeless City. That way, when the bone chalices cultivated here in misery, their efficiency could be raised somewhat, making it easier for them to nurture their Dao Bones.
And it wasn't just traces of a Spirit Gathering Array; there were other Formations as well.
Just as Lu Ye was carefully observing, trying to glean a thing or two, a sudden boom came from outside, and the entire Edgeless City violently shuddered once.
Yet even such commotion failed to draw any reaction from the bone chalices.
The Snake Girl's body, possessed by Dark Butterfly, suddenly drifted down to Lu Ye's side, her expression grave. "It's begun!"
Such a disturbance clearly meant that Yan Zhixing and the others had already made their move. This had been agreed on beforehand: as long as Lu Ye successfully entered Edgeless City, they could attack.
The bone chalices, who had always remained indifferent to the outside world, suddenly all began to tremble uncontrollably.
They were obviously afraid—afraid of the Snake Girl!
She was the one existence that could still stir terror in them, because all of their pain and suffering had been personally inflicted by her.
She didn't need to do anything; just by standing here, she could awaken the deepest fear in the hearts of the bone chalices.
In Edgeless City, inside a grand hall, as the commotion from outside echoed in, a towering figure suddenly opened his eyes. Even seated, this figure gave the impression of a mountain's looming bulk. His features clearly bore the marks of Beast Transformation—his entire face looked like an enraged lion's.
This was the City Lord of this generation of Edgeless City, Mad Lion.
He sprang to his feet, fully three zhang tall, his sharp gaze piercing toward the depths of the Void as he barked harshly, "Who dares run wild here!"
How many years had it been since something like this happened? Edgeless City had stood here since ancient times, never toppled. Anyone with a hint of discernment wouldn't come looking for trouble. Yet today, some fools ignorant of life and death had come to provoke them.
Even through layer upon layer of obstruction, he could still see the two figures outside Edgeless City at a glance.
His face instantly darkened. "Human race!"
And they were two extremely unfamiliar humans, ones he had never seen before.
Mad Lion couldn't figure it out. They had no grudges between them, so what were these two trying to do?
But a deep-rooted contempt kept him from taking these two humans too seriously, even though the one who had just made a move seemed quite strong.
He suddenly recalled a piece of intelligence Specter Slayer had reported to him some time ago.
That legendary Banlan, for some unknown reason, had anchored nearby, and a human had emerged from it, slaughtering a group of Edgeless City's men. Specter Slayer received the news and went to intercept, ambushing and severely injuring that human. Unfortunately, the other party took the chance to flee back into Banlan, so Specter Slayer didn't manage to finish the job.
Not too long after, that human showed up again—only this time he brought out a very powerful soul body. After crossing blows with it for a brief moment, Specter Slayer retreated.
He knew Specter Slayer's strength well. They were both at Peak Dao Fusion, each with their own specialties. In a frontal clash, Specter Slayer wasn't his match, but if Specter Slayer found a chance to launch a sneak attack, even he wouldn't dare claim he could handle it with ease.
For that soul body to exchange blows with Specter Slayer, it was clearly not weak.
He had naturally heard of Banlan's great name, but according to rumor Banlan was a place you could enter but never leave. Yet now, who knew why it had stopped near his territory, and someone had even run out from inside.
Previously, Specter Slayer had advised him to pay closer attention to the movements around Banlan, but he'd been at a critical juncture in his cultivation and hadn't taken it seriously.
He had simply assumed Banlan would drift away soon enough…
Who would have thought another twist would appear now.
These two humans… could they be the ones who came out of Banlan?
Mad Lion's thoughts shifted, and in short order, two figures appeared before him. One looked extremely indistinct—this was Specter Slayer, who had previously grievously injured Lu Ye and was the second strongest in Edgeless City.
The other had a tall, slender frame, his arms hanging down past his knees. He looked like a human, but his hair was thick and bristling, especially on his face where golden fur flared outward, giving him a wild, unruly air.
Golden Ape. In terms of cultivation and strength, he was only a step behind Mad Lion and Specter Slayer, and was the predetermined successor as the next City Lord of Edgeless City.
From ancient times to now, Edgeless City's line of succession had always rested in the hands of the Beast Race. So even though Specter Slayer was stronger, the City Lord's seat would never be his.
Once Mad Lion advanced to Dao Harmony, Golden Ape would take control of Edgeless City and become the new City Lord. Of course, advancing to Dao Harmony wasn't easy. Mad Lion had been striving toward it for many years.
"City Lord." Specter Slayer and Golden Ape stood side by side, bowing in unison.
Mad Lion gave a slight nod, one hand holding Edgeless City's Great Array Jade Cluster as he quietly activated the big array, his other hand lifting lightly. In an instant, a phantom light-screen appeared before him, reflecting the figures of Yan Zhixing and Chen Gushan.
"Specter Slayer, take a look. Is the human you encountered near Banlan one of these two?" Mad Lion asked.
Specter Slayer glanced over and shook his head. "No, that one is very young."
"What about the soul body?"
"The soul body is a woman."
Mad Lion frowned, momentarily puzzled. If so, then were these two humans who suddenly came to provoke them actually from Banlan or not?
If they were, the dispute before his eyes could be explained. But if not, then why had they come to provoke Edgeless City?
"City Lord, let me teach them a lesson. Mere humans dare run wild in Edgeless City—simply don't know their place!" Golden Ape looked eager, battle intent surging.
Mad Lion gave him a sidelong glance and did not refuse. He nodded. "Specter Slayer, go with him. But be careful. Since these two dared come, their strength definitely won't be weak."
The enemy had already beaten on their front door; Edgeless City naturally could not sit back and ignore it.
Specter Slayer silently nodded, very steady.
Golden Ape, however, was full of swagger. "City Lord, rest assured, I'll make sure they never return."
Mad Lion made no comment. He knew Golden Ape wanted to show off, to let others see he was qualified to take the next City Lord's seat. But these two humans were absolutely not that easy to deal with.
Taking some losses wouldn't be a bad thing. Golden Ape's growth this lifetime had been far too smooth; it wouldn't be good for his future. Mad Lion had always worried he hadn't gone through enough hardship, and right now was without doubt a good opportunity.
Golden Ape soon left Edgeless City, and before him, Specter Slayer had already slipped out silently.
Yan Zhixing, who was in the middle of wildly bombarding Edgeless City, saw this and his eyes lit up.
Their actions here were nothing more than luring the snake out of its hole. He'd been worried the other side wouldn't bite, but who knew they'd draw one out so easily.
From the looks of it, the strength wasn't bad.
"Careful!" Chen Gushan's expression suddenly changed. He raised his hand in a grasp, and a long spear appeared in his grip. Man and spear became one as he thrust straight at Yan Zhixing.
In their youth they had fought side by side countless times; their minds were already in complete sync. Facing this sudden spear strike, Yan Zhixing's expression didn't change. He merely tilted his head slightly.
The Dao soldier spear, wrapped in Dao force, scraped past his cheek and stabbed toward the space behind him. Violent power erupted as a figure that had compressed its aura suddenly appeared.
Yan Zhixing swept forward without even looking back, heading straight to meet Golden Ape.
Chen Gushan had already engaged Specter Slayer.
Although he had never seen Specter Slayer before, he could tell at a glance that this ghost cultivator was the one mentioned in Lu Ye's intel—the very same who had exchanged moves with Dark Butterfly.
Sure enough, a Peak Dao Fusion. Even though he'd missed the chance to strike from ambush and was now clashing head-on, Chen Gushan could still feel the other party's deep foundation.
On the other side, Yan Zhixing and Golden Ape had also collided, the fight extremely fierce.
The four Dao bodies paired off in battle, bodies flashing and twisting, Dao force flung about.
But after only a short moment, Specter Slayer let out a low shout. "Golden Ape, get back!"
Golden Ape was locked in desperate combat with Yan Zhixing. His strength was a bit inferior to Yan Zhixing's, but it wouldn't be easy for Yan Zhixing to finish him either.
Golden Ape's temper was violent; he had already been roused to true fury and ignored the warning.
"There's an ambush, move!" Specter Slayer shouted again.
Golden Ape jolted in fright and only then realized something was wrong. In the midst of the clash, his opponent had been quietly dragging him, shifting the battlefield. At that moment he was already some distance away from Edgeless City.
Facing Yan Zhixing alone, Golden Ape wasn't afraid, but if the other side had an ambush, then he really had to be cautious.
He no longer dared be careless. Forcing himself to endure a blow from Yan Zhixing, he spun around and fled toward Edgeless City.
From the side, two figures burst out—that was Zi Ying and Ho Linglong, who had been lying in ambush nearby.
According to the original plan, they weren't supposed to act at this moment. They were to wait for Yan Zhixing and Chen Gushan to lure the enemy far away, then reveal themselves to cut them off.
At that time, four against two, they'd have great confidence in stopping them.
But Specter Slayer had been too alert, keeping the plan from being perfectly carried out.
A moment later, the four figures could only look helplessly toward Edgeless City, unwillingness in all their eyes. In the end, they had still let the enemy flee back.
In the main hall, Specter Slayer and Golden Ape returned—the former calm-faced, the latter full of lingering fear. If not for Specter Slayer's timely warning just now, this trip would surely have been deadly for him.
The commotion outside had been too great; all the Dao Fusion of Edgeless City had been alarmed and were now gathered here.
All told, at least twenty figures, all staring at Mad Lion.
Mad Lion, however, was looking at the dejected Golden Ape, earnestly instructing, "Never underestimate your opponent. Even the human race—in Edgeless City, humans truly hold low status, but in Star Abyss, the human race also has strong experts."
"Yes." Golden Ape kept his head down. He'd been spouting bold words earlier, only to end up running back with his tail between his legs. It was really hard for him to accept.
"City Lord, we request to fight!" A Dao Fusion stepped forward. "They only have four. We have so many Dao Fusion here—are we supposed to be scared of them?"
As soon as those words came out, the crowd's fervor spiked, voices requesting battle rising one after another.
