Sapphyra

The last thing I wanted was to slip and slide into a wall so for the remainder of my trip to Cappville city hall, I flew. Honestly, it was a little fun too. Although I may have thrown up on a few people because of all the flips and twists.

I’m pregnant and this city isn’t leveled. Give a dragon a break.

I landed on the steps of the massive baby pink building and gently pushed open its wide earthen doors. My fingers brushed against the solid walls, enjoying the silky yet rough stone-like texture.

“Do you like it?” I jumped slightly when Mayor Vrush’s voice hit me. He waddled over and tipped his hat while several capps sat at desks, typing on old fashioned typewriters. Okay, this is pretty adorable. Seeing them act like they’re in a 1950’s newspaper company kinda warms my heart.

At least they have a purpose.

“Hm?” I glanced at him, trying to focus. It’s been getting harder and harder to keep my thoughts on track lately.

“The walls. I was asking if you liked them, though I suppose that’s an odd question. Ohohoho!” His laugh was infectious, not because he said anything funny but because he could have easily popped out of a comedy anime.

“Hehe, they’re uh, they’re nice. They’re silky and stony at the same time which is cool.” I pursed my lips and cleared my throat. “But I didn’t come here to talk about architecture.” My voice dropped low and I bent over to whisper in his ear hole.

“What can you tell me about how my mom got here?”

The smile he had earlier vanished. Vrush started oozing, ew. I guess that’s their equivalent of sweating bullets.

“Oho…follow me please.” He quickly turned on his heel and fled to his office walking at a brisk pace for a capp.

When we entered his office, he closed and locked the door behind me. Then he pulled down the curtains and pulled out a small pink chair for me.

“It’s okay, I can—”

He waved me off. “No, no, I insist. You are our esteemed guest and the daughter of a dear friend of mine.” I tried not to narrow my eyes at him from the way he emphasized the word dear. That’s still my mama.

“Okay, thank you.” I take a seat and cross my legs.

“There isn’t much I can tell you about your mother from before she arrived but I can tell you this much: someone dropped her off here.”

I leaned forward in my seat. “Who?”

Vrush shook his head then sat down behind his desk. “He never gave us a man but he had pale skin and white hair, and his mouth was covered.” Well that’s something but it's no one that I know of. What would Wyatt do? Probably blackmail Vrush and squeeze as much information as he could get out of him.

I’m not Wyatt though.

“Is there anything else you can think of about this man? Anything that stood out to you at all?”

“Well…there is one thing, though I don’t see how it can help you.” I gave him a reassuring half-smile.

“You’d be surprised. They say the devil’s in the details.”

“Since you put it like that…his boots were covered in gray sand.” Gray sand? “It’s the oddest thing because there are no beaches around here. In fact, the only body of water we know of not on the surface is underground. Lake Revvie.”

“I’m sorry, run that by me again?” What kind of name is Lake Revvie?

“Oh, Lake Reversal. We call it Revvie for short. It's a beautiful place to visit and much like the rest of Cappville it defies gravitational boundaries.”

“Is it just called that because the water goes in reverse?” I raised a brow.

His jaw dropped, “how did you know?!” He grinned as my palm slid down my face. Some things really aren’t that deep.

“Gray sand, okay. That’s something. Wait, his eyes, did you happen to catch what color his eyes were?”

“Hm…red, I think. Blood red, like the moon used to be. I read about that in a book once!”

He’s so wholesome. Why couldn’t all mayors have been this nice back before things went to shit? I mean…aside from speaking a little too fondly about my mom, I like this guy.

“I see. Well that’s something.” Standing up, I stretched and yawned a little. “Okay, I lied about earlier.”

“Hm? Oh, you do want to know about our architecture?” he opened his mouth nice and wide like he was about to jump into a long-winded history lesson. I held up a hand.

“Please. I don’t wanna be rude and fall asleep on you. What I really wanted was some tips on how to help build up the surface city.”

His shoulders went rigid and he sucked in a breath. The first hint of negativity I’ve seen from this guy, not that I could blame him after what they did to his people.

“I’m not sure I can help you with that.” The bright chipper tone in his voice was gone.

“Look, I know you probably hate them and I’m not here to tell you what to do with your life but…Cyran City is my home. It’s my mom’s home too.” Shoulders slumped, his mouth drooped into a frown.

“I understand that but even if I could help you—and I’m not saying that I will—we built Cappville with knowledge beyond our years. If it weren’t for your mother, this city might not have been built.” He sighed.

“I’m confused, did my mom become a construction manager overnight?”

He shook his head, “No. She led us. Believe it or not, we capps are very good at working with the materials that nature has left lying around. People have more talent than you might think.”

“While I don’t doubt that, you have me at a bit of a disadvantage. I used to be able to just hand people class assignments—basically jobs—and then send them off to do that job.” And now I’m kind of aimless without it. Pathetic.

“Wait, you said you built Cappville with knowledge beyond your years.” I wrinkled my nose, trying to decipher what that meant. “How did that happen?”

“Oh, that’s easy.” He smiled, showing all of his gummy white teeth. “We prayed to our goddess, Caprisha.”

Cap…risha. Right. Why do I get the feeling I’m gonna need to be high for this one?
