Sapphyra
[Sapphyra…Sapph, can you hear me?]
The smell of bleach and ammonia comforted me as I lay on a med bay cot. I know I shouldn’t have but I ended up cleaning the room anyway. Just a little mopping, what harm could it possibly do?
It made me pass out so I’d say a good chunk of harm. In fact, I’ve been drifting in and out of sleep for more than an hour now. The only reason I keep waking up is because System won’t shut the fuck up.
“Didn’t you want me to get some rest?” I mumble, pulling the sheet over my head.
[Yes but not with your heart rate this slow. This isn’t you relaxing, it’s you giving up.]
I waved her off, flicking my hand in a random direction.
“What do you know? You’re just a parasite living in my body at this point. You and all the nanites that make you up.”
[If I had feelings I’m sure they’d be hurt. Lucky for your dumbass, my survival is dependent upon yours so I’ll continue to harass you until—]
“Until what, Sys? It’s just you, me, the poison and my babies at this point.” Bitter but truthful. “I don’t want to be around them anymore.”
White spots appeared behind my eyelids and I groaned as another wave of heat rolled from my head to my feet. Sweat poured from all over, drenching the poor bed. Just what I needed, something else to clean up.
[Try drinking some water.]
A hollow laugh shook my chest.
“How can I do that with Oceanus and Tethys gone? They maintained the water system and now it's shut down.” Just like my organs are shutting down…not that she’s said that, it just feels that way.
[Sapph.] She sighed. Sys never sighs. Maybe she’s picking up my mannerisms. [Guy will come through. He’ll use the mate-bond to help you.]
“Oh, you mean the feel-good touches? Yeah, no thanks. That’s just torture at this point and you know as well as I do that the mate bond is not a cure, it’s a pacifier.”
Then again, I was absolutely crying like a baby.
[Wyatt could—]
I snarled at her. She pissed me off enough that my tongue split at the tip like a snake's tongue and I hissed at her.
[I know you hate his ass, I do too but I'm desperate, Sapph.] She followed up in a softer tone that almost felt…human.
[I’m scared.]
“I thought you didn’t have feelings.” Coughs wracked my chest for a good thirty seconds. I blocked the spittle with my fist, biting my thumb until the fit passed.
It was hard not to panic at the drops of warm crimson on my hand.
“Try to distract me.”
[How can I do that?]
“I don’t know. Tell me about the wish system maybe? Anything to get my mind off of being sick.”
[If it makes you feel any better, I’m learning it as I go, just like you.]
“Ha! That’s wild. I can’t imagine you not having all the answers.”
[Better believe it babe. Besides, the Wish System seems pretty self-explanatory. Helping people is good.] She ended the sentence but there was something about her tone that threw me off.
“There’s a but in there.”
[Not a but. More like an addition. Helping people is good as long as the intention of the wish is good.]
Curling up into a ball on my side, I let the gravity of her words sit with me. Good intentions is what got me ill in the first place. It’s what got me pregnant and in all of this mess to begin with.
“What happens if someone has a bad wish? Like they want to hurt someone?”
[Then whoever fulfills the wish shall reap their reward.]
The thought made my stomach churn, and it was already scrambled like eggs in a greasy diner.
Wiping some sweat off my brow, a dry smile graced my lips.
“That would be sad but interesting.”
[What would be?]
“If someone became a villain that way. It would make heroes necessary all over again. Just in time for me to be on the bench.” The one thing I’d been trying to shove out of my mind this whole time; my glory days. They could be right around the corner…but only if someone fulfilled an evil wish first.
[Don’t you worry about that right now. Your only job is to get better for those babies. And don’t forget your mom too—]
She stopped abruptly and my horns vibrated so hard my body nearly bounced off the bed.
A strong dragon was nearby. Impossibly strong if the headache growing in my horns was any indication.
It wasn’t Rupert. Couldn’t be Guy or Voss, I knew their scents. Could Hyperion be back already?
I gulped, swallowing my sour fear. I was in no shape to fight again yet but I would defend myself no matter what.
Footfalls echoed in the ruined hallways of Beacon, loud enough to tell me whoever it was had heavy feet—and boots with spurs. A very distinctive sound.
“Whoever you are—” I coughed, barely sliding out of bed. My bare feet slapped against the cold tiles. I nearly tripped and hit my face on the bed railing. How could I forget that the floor was still slippery?
“Whoever you are, you don’t want any part of this.” I called out, limbs trembling.
[Sapph, get your sick ass back in bed! You can barely stand, let alone fight!] Sys quietly hissed at me.
“Shutup. All I know how to do…is—” the word wouldn’t come. I wobbled on my feet, hands slipping from the pole I’d grasped for balance.
“Fight.” I mumbled, tumbling over into the arms of a sturdy wall. Wait, I wasn’t standing next to a wall. What the hell?
And why does the wall feel like home?
I forced myself to look up at whoever caught me but I couldn’t make out his face. His hair though…it was familiar. White hair, red eyes, where have I seen that before?
“Easy now, darlin’. Can’t have you kissin’ the floor just yet. You might be a fighter but even you can’t beat all the dragonsbane in your system right now. So I’ll help you…just this once.”
That voice was familiar too though it held a southern drawl to it. My thoughts drifted but no matter what I did, I couldn’t make out his face.
When his hand pressed my warm forehead, relief covered me like a warm blanket. I sighed softly as he sat on the bed with me in his arms. The last thing I wanted was to be handled by another man but I had to admit, whatever power he had felt…familiar.
Like a mate-bond.
Mate.
Wait…no. No, no, hell no!
Mate! Eggs Need Him!
Stop it. Please, just…not again.
We…need him.
My dragon would not shut up, even as tears streaked down my face. Fate wanted to fuck with me yet again.
If he’s my mate…is this guy the mate Phereda made for me? The third one?!
The one who abandoned me?
