Wyatt
When the hairs on the back of my neck stood up, I knew something was wrong with her. I don’t know how I knew—maybe it was our mate-bond—but something was going on with Sapph. Beyond the dragonsbane giving her pain, I couldn’t feel any distress.
Burning hatred on the other hand, that much came through like a neon billboard.
“Guy. Have you got the energy yet?” I reached out to him telepathically.
“Working on it. This thing does not bleed easy. Why, what’s up?”
“Check on Sapph as soon as possible. Whatever is happening to her, she’s absolutely hating it.”
I didn’t like how long it took for him to respond.
“Guy?”
“Y…yeah? I’m busy doing what you told me to do!” Oh, he knows something about this.
“What do you know? I won’t ask—-”
“Yeah, yeah, you won’t ask again. Goddess, get some new material would you?” He sighed and groaned. Stalling for time no doubt.
“I may have…told my old mentor about her.”
My left eye twitched like a fly was buzzing behind the lid.
“You’re overreacting.” Noa added, yawning in the back of my mind.
“Shut up Noa. Guy, why would Sapph hate your mentor? Tell me about him.”
“What? Why does that matter?” The growl in my throat was inhuman, feral. It was so loud it woke up Rupert on the other side of the jail cell we sat in.
“What the hell are you doing, old man? Some of us need our beauty sleep.”
“Sleep can’t fix your appearance but a blunt object might.” I murmured, turning my attention back to Guy. I tried reaching out to him again but he shut the connection off.
“I take it back. We’re killing him the second we get out of here.”
I rolled my eyes and sat down. Why on earth would Guy shut me out? What was so special about this mentor of his?
A thought occurred to me. Guy wasn’t the only one trained by his mentor.
“Voss…Voss!” I quickly stood and jogged to the edge of the cell, right behind the dragon and wolfsbane covered bars.
“What do you want, prisoner?” He didn’t look up from whatever held his attention beneath his desk.
“I need to know about your mentor. The person who trained you and Guy.”
Voss’s head snaps up and he squints his cold dark eyes on me, “the only reason I’m answering you is because I’m starting to respect your wife. Grampa, that’s what we call him anyway. He’s an old dragon, straight from Drakkir. He travels around a lot and rarely stays here longer than a week or so.”
“And his appearance?”
Voss shrugs, truly his sincerity is touching.
“He looks old? Hard to tell behind the mask though. White hair, red eyes. Big, like over 9 feet tall I think.”
“White hair and red eyes. Are you sure? I need you to be 100 percent certain right now.” My hands gripped the bars, ignoring the numbing sensation quickly overtaking me. Because if I’m right then Sapph is in trouble.
“Yeah I’m sure. Why are you asking about him anyway?”
If I tell him about Sapph being in danger he won’t believe me. Voss would gain nothing from lying to me about someone who’s hardly around so I choose to believe him.
“Just…curious about the man who made you so deadly.”
He smirked and then quickly schooled his features.
“Yeah, whatever. Don’t try to get on my good side now.” Flattery always works on vain people, and Voss is definitely screaming ‘I spend two hours getting ready every morning’ like a neon sign.
But none of that helped me. I’m still trapped in this godforsaken cell without my tools or my power—I can’t even shift.
“There is one tool at our disposal.”
I glanced over at Rupert’s sleeping form, curled into a ball in the corner of the cell.
“And what exactly can he do for us that we can’t do for ourselves?”
“Beats me but what have we got to lose at this point anyway?”
I hate it when he’s right. As much as I loathe to admit it, getting any help from my son might be the only way I can get to her in time.
With a soft sigh, I walked over towards him and took a seat next to him.
“The world must be on fire for you to be so close to me.” He mumbled, clearly still awake.
“I wouldn’t come to you if I had any other idea on what to do.”
Out of the corner of my eye, I caught the tiniest hint of his smile.
“What is it now?”
“It’s your mother.”
The smile dropped in an instant.
“What did you do to her now?” Rupert sat up and scowled at me.
“Now? Nothing. Earlier? I dosed her with ten doses of dragonsbane while she was in her dragon form. At the time it did nothing—” I stopped when I felt his hands grasp my collar and vigorously shake me.
“Why the FUCK would you do that?!” It was almost touching that Rupert cared so much. But I didn’t let his words phase me.
“She was out of control and pregnant—”
“Which is why you don’t force dragonsbane down into her body! I cannot believe you.” He hissed through gritted teeth. “She’s your wife and that’s the best you could come up with?”
I smacked his hands away, fed up with his bullshit.
“I’m not the one who put her in the situation to begin with! Who the fuck takes a corpse and leaves a note behind?! You almost had him. Excuse me?!”
Voss banged on the cell bars. “Hey! Quiet down in there you two!”
“This doesn't concern you!” My son and I yelled at him in sync.
“My plan was always to free mother from the cages you kept her in. That’s it. Even if she consumed the world—consumed me—-she would be free. Finally free.”
I spat on the ground between his feet, holding back the bitter taste on my tongue.
“That’s the bullshit Barbie fed you? That I kept my wife in cages because I wanted to? You know nothing other than what she fed you.”
He barked out a laugh. “Ha! That’s where you’re wrong, you sanctimonious homunculus. I’ve had my eye on her since she awoke. Everything that I have done has been leading to a glorious goal. A goal that I nearly accomplished, if not for you and your meddling runt!”
“The same runt you decided to adopt? The same one that’s now your father by way of dragon mate rights? That one?”
“You’re being petty…and it’s funny as fuck.”
“Silence!”
Rupert Roared at me. He threw his arm back and left himself open enough that I could see the punch coming a mile away. Still, I let it land, right on my lower jaw.
“Shit. What did I just tell you two?” Voss said, scrambling to open the lock.
“I knew I should have pulled out. You were a waste of a pregnancy, a waste of time!” I delivered an uppercut to his jaw and he staggered back, placing a hand on the wall.
Voss came running up, baton in hand because that’s all that would work in this cage.
Perfect.
When Voss went to check on Rupert, I jumped on his back and locked my arm around his neck. He was not going down easy, flailing and slamming me into the wall. His nails dig into my arm, had they been claws I’d be missing one arm.
But this cage stopped all shifting, not just ours. I gambled that it stopped magic and system bullshit too. Glad to know I was right.
Voss finally slumped to the ground, passed out.
“You could have helped me take him out, you know.” I glared at Rupert who was already walking towards the exit.
“I helped you enough by engaging in that farce you called a fight.”
I rolled my eyes. This boy was tiresome.
“Now you know what it feels like listening to you before we married Sapph.”
“There is no way in hell I…”
I paused, dismissing it. I don’t have time to argue with Noa right now.
“Well, what are you waiting for, old man? An invitation? Do I need to hold your hand or are you ready to go help mother?”
I raised a wary brow and walked past him. “You’re coming?”
“She’s with someone more dangerous than both of us. Of course I’m coming.”
I know I’m disappointing Guy by leaving early but I’ll come back, I swear. I just need to make sure she’s alive.
As we ran towards Beacon—my powers were exhausted and needed to charge up—I couldn’t help but think the worst of what we might find ahead.
Hang on, princess. I’m coming for you.
