Barbie
I couldn’t believe those idiots left her here alone.
I sat down on the bed next to Sapphyra and reached out a hand like I was about to caress her face. But I stopped myself.
I wasn’t here for lies and comfort. She had all her fumbling men for that.
So instead, I tapped her on the shoulder.
“Wake up. Sapphyra, I have something you need to hear.”
It was only now that I saw how ill she had gotten from the poison. My hands clenched into fists, and I took a deep breath, trying to control my anger.
She didn’t stir when I touched her, and that made me worried.
“Come on, Dragon Queen. Wake the fuck up!”
Her body twitched, and her tail lashed out, wrapping itself around my throat.
Ah. There we go.
“I knew not all of you was asleep,” I said through clenched teeth.
Her tail constricted around my throat like a python in the Amazon rainforest. Pretty sure my head was about to pop off.
“I know you can hear me, Sapph, so I bring you good news. I know how to solve all your problems.”
The tail loosened around my throat, but she still held me fast.
It was probably a good thing Zeke wasn’t in here because I knew he wouldn’t be able to control himself with me in danger. That was why I had him outside as a lookout.
“Do I have your attention? Good. What if I told you that you could be a superhero again and be rid of all this mate bullshit? What if I told you I could bring your family to you? All your brothers, your sister, all the people you’ve been missing. What would you say to that?”
A few seconds passed in silence, and I was almost afraid she wouldn’t go for it.
Then the tail dropped completely.
Her eyes opened, and she weakly turned her head to me.
“What the hell are you talking about, Barbie? What about my family?”
I rubbed my synthetic neck, still feeling the effects of her tail.
“Don’t play coy with me. I know you know I’ve been using your mother to keep surveillance tabs on you. But that’s only because I had to do to her what I did to your older brothers and your sister. I had to make a few upgrades to a couple organs. See, unlike you—or I guess you and Wyatt—you’re not human. Even when you place a human in cryo-freeze, their organs still eventually start shutting down. So when your mother’s eyes went, I gave her a new pair. I was so kind. You can thank me now.”
I was sure that if she had been at even half strength, she would have thrown me out the window. As it stands now, Sapph is so weak, I could see the artery in her neck bouncing from across the room.
“Where is the rest of my family?” she asked, trying to sit up with trembling hands. Her body fell back against the bed. Dying didn’t look good on her.
“I’ll bring them to you. All you need to do is wish for them”
“What?” she asked, eyes widening.
“That’s right, dearie. I’m going to bring you your family, Sapph.”
“What’s the catch? You get to use them like puppets to break me even further?” she said bitterly, with a tone that said she had already given up.
“Believe it or not, Sapph, I actually want you to have a happy ending. I am trying to help you! I’m trying to free you from the burden that is Wyatt. Why can’t you see that?”
My voice had risen higher than I wanted it to.
“Hmph. You still want me to build that prison, don’t you? What is it you’re really after?”
Jaw clicking, I glowered at her and shook my head.
“You’re asking pointless questions! Just agree to the plan; it’s not complicated at all. What do I have to do to make you see reason?” My voice caught in my throat as an ember of humanity tried to push its way out.
“Yeah. Reason makes somebody do all of this.” She motioned toward her body. “Reason is what drives somebody to kidnap my family and use them as bargaining chips to try and get me to divorce my husband. So I hate to break it to you, but I’m quite tired of people with reasons thinking they can come into my life and decide about how it’s supposed to go.”
Her tail pointed toward the door.
“You can get out. I advise you to move quickly because I don’t think Guy is going to stay away for much longer.”
I narrowed my eyes on her. My jaw clicked as I tilted my head to the side.
My face darkened as I walked away from her, clearly disappointed. But when I got to the door, a small smile tugged at the corner of my lips, and I turned just enough so she would hear me when I spoke.
“You know, despite everything, I still believe in you. You’ve always been inspiring to everyone we’ve ever met. Cyran, Beacon, even the bad guys we used to fight. Somewhere along the way, you forgot about that. But don’t worry, because I’m going to help you remember.”
And with that, I walked out the door, leaving her puzzled and no doubt on edge for what would happen next.
“Did you tell her what you needed to tell her?” Zeke asked once we were far enough away from Beacon.
“Yeah.”
“And how did she take it?”
“About as well as I planned for. That’s all right. I expected nothing less from her.”
“I don’t like it,” Zeke grumbled. “We’re out in open space trying to pretend like everything is going to go according to plan.”
“Because everything is going to go according to plan,” I said, stopping on a dime and turning to him.
Normally, the look on my face would stop him in his tracks.
But not this time.
He must have been really worried.
“Barbie, we shouldn’t be playing games with your life. I say we just leave and take our chances in the wild. We could have a much better life out there than playing supervillain games in here.”
I barked out a laugh. It was cute that he thought this would go any other way.
“Zeke, you’re adorable, and I admit it’s not so bad having you around, but never forget how this works. I don’t care about your stupid fated mate bond. If you cross me…”
I looked him directly in the eye and pointed my chin up toward him, as if he were beneath me.
“I will end you, and I’ll sleep peacefully afterward.”
He gave me a toothy grin and nodded.
“Yeah. I expect that from you. But let me ask you this.”
He leaned forward, getting right next to my ear, sending a chill down my spine with how close he was.
“If Wyatt’s this big evil monster you’re trying to be better than, and I’m part of his bloodline, what do you think’s going to happen when you try to cross me?”
With that, he pulled away from me and started walking away.
I was annoyed but something else tugged at me. I glanced around to make sure but I had the sinking feeling that we were being watched.
