Guy

I should have known something was off when she moved away that fast. Typical dumb me, I was more focused on being supportive. Now we’re here, at a board where wishes come true, as long as someone else is willing to help that wish come true.

But I couldn’t understand why Sapph would make that wish.

“Sapph, you already are a superhero. I feel like that’s not something you just forget.” I gave her an awkward smile, but her back was to me.

She still stared up at the board like it held all her hopes and dreams. Her shoulders slumped, and she shook her head, massive pink curls dancing in the wind.

“You wouldn’t understand, Guy.” The pain in her voice felt so familiar.

I’d already seen this same song and dance, though, and babying her wouldn’t help either of us in this situation. So I crossed my arms and gave her a hard look.

“Sapph, I was captain of the guard here. I was the adopted son of the big guy in charge. Giving up power or prestige is nothing new to me.”

She flinched as if I’d struck her, but her shoulders crept up again immediately. Another wall put up, great.

“That was your life, Guy, not mine.” Was she yelling at me? There’s no fucking way. Sapph turned towards me, eyes wet with unshed tears. There goes my hardass mentality all at once.

“Angel.” I whispered.

“No,” she held up her palms towards me. “You had people working for you; I had people cheering for me. That is the difference, Guy. You grew up seeing me on walls inside a room, but that was just a snapshot, a tiny blip in time of who I used to be.”

Sapph’s hand covered her heart, mouth set in a twisted frown as the tears flowed freely.

“It was never just about the fame for me, Guy. Saving people was what I always did. It’s who I am…what I need to live and breathe. And until the city started showing me, it could rebuild without me, I…I hadn’t realized how much I’d been choking to death.”

She ran her hand down the board, tracing over her own jagged wish sticking out.

“I hadn’t realized how much I needed this.”

“What about how much I need you, huh?” My chest tightened as I tried to pull her back, tried to make her see reason. “Forget the city, what about the people that love you?!”

Silence was her only answer. That made me sick to my stomach.

“Does this bond mean nothing to you?”

“The bond that was forced on us—” I cut her off, pissed already.

“Not the mate bond! Our bond, Sapph. How we are when we’re together.” One step closer to her, I tried to reach for her hand, but she flinched and pulled back, as if I’d burned her.

“We have fun together.” She mumbled, “I enjoy being around you—”

“Enough to carry my baby? Yeah, it’s hard to beat the allegations on that one.”

That got a dry smile out of her. “Yes…enough to make a family with you.” But her face darkened, a sad shadow covering her normally sunny mahogany complexion.

“But not enough for me to ever love being Clean-Up girl.”

Why did it feel like my heart was being torn in two?

”That’s not me. I’ve tried to force myself into that box, shape it around me, but it’s not working, Guy.”

She wiped her face again and gave me a half-smile, “It’s time I stopped pretending to be something I’m not.”

“Sapph, you’re talking like you’re not still that hero everyone loves!” Please, angel, I need you to understand me. Something is sinking into the pit of my soul, like a string stretched taut. Is our love about to snap in half?

“Forget it.” She turned her back on me, “You wouldn’t understand. No matter how many times I try to explain it to you. You keep hearing what you need me to be—telling me I’m this and I’m that for everyone else. Well I’m done. I’m done being what everyone else wants me to be.”

I wasn’t done yet; I refused to be. But before I could say anything else, someone wearing a dark cloak came out of nowhere and stood between us. They didn’t have a scent.

Who would wear a scent blocker?!

“I believe that would be my queue.” Her voice cut through me like a hot knife through butter.

Barbie.

Oh no!

“Don’t you fucking dare!” I yelled, reaching for her. Heavy, dark hands wrapped around my wrists.

Zeke, I should have known her furry boy-toy wouldn’t be far behind.

Barbie grinned and twirled around us, placing her hand on Sapphyra’s wish like it belonged only to her.

“I believe this is mine~” Barbie gleefully said, pulling out Sapph’s wish.

“Sapph? Sapph! Aren’t you going to do anything about this?!” I yelled at her, trying to break through to her. I just don’t understand it. Why isn’t she stopping this from happening?

“Let it happen.” Zeke grumbled low enough for only me to hear.

“Are you fucking insane?! That’s your great-aunt!”

He growled in my ear. “Let.It.Happen.” Zeke insisted in a hushed whisper. “This is bigger than all of us.”

I wrapped my tail around his neck and squeezed with everything I had, but his grip wouldn’t loosen. By the time he finally slumped to the ground, unconscious, it was too late.

[Wish:I wish I could remember how to be a superhero again!]

The wind stopped rushing. The sun stopped shining as dark red and black clouds covered the area. It was like time stopped around us.There wasn’t supposed to be a storm today which meant only one thing: Barbie is fulfilling Sapphyra’s quest.

[Wish Quest:Cause a Disaster]

An unholy scream dropped everyone, Barbie included, down to our knees. The ground shook so hard that recently rebuilt buildings began crumbling all over again. Not Beacon though. It stood tall and proud, a signal of safety for everyone to run towards.

And running they were doing. Citizens from all over began flying, running whatever they could use to get to safety.

But I knew what was happening, it wasn’t a natural disaster. Beacon could buy us some time but not enough.

The thing protecting us for years? The Monolith Cyran City had been sitting beneath for a century? It was waking up.

I knew this because its hand took up the whole sky.

And it was coming down on me.

Closing my eyes, I knew running would be pointless and I accepted my fate. When impact happened, I prayed the goddess had a nice place for me.

Death never came though. Instead, I heard some familiar grunts.

I opened my eyes and nearly cried.

“Giving up already?” Sapph asked, she’d changed into an all white and golden pink outfit, holding the hand at bay with both of hers.

“You’re not allowed to quit, citizen!”

Part of me wanted to cheer as she started pushing it back into the air. The bigger part of me paused and watched her, confused as fuck.

Did she just call me a citizen?
