Cool drops of sunset-orange liquid hit me in the eyes as we walked.
“Ow! Why is someone pouring Gatorade on me?” I murmured, wiping my face, only to groan when more hit me.
“That’s because it’s raining, Sapph.”
“Rain isn’t orange.” I paused, realizing where I was. “Why is the rain orange?”
“That’s a different topic. Hush, just follow me.” Guy guided me back up the wall via his tactical gear's rope. I was still leaning on him though I could walk on my own if I pushed myself.
Stupid slow regeneration.
He ushered me back past his guards and onto the mushroom side. Though we got some looks, no one said anything.
“Are they used to you hopping the wall?”
“I’m High Dragon Rupert’s son, leader of the Wall Guard. I don’t have to answer to anyone…but just in case anyone asks, I have a friend to cover for me.”
When we landed, he gave me a quick once over.
“Hows your shoulder?”
I flexed my fingers and rotated my wrist, wincing when I went too far. “My arms are no longer numb but the hole hasn’t healed completely yet.”
“Easy.” His hand covered my wrist, rubbing it to get the kinks out. I actually giggled.
“What the hell is so funny?” But he was smiling too.
“Nothing, I’m just finding out that I’m ticklish. “ He raised a questioning brow. “Give me some credit, Guy. My skin used to be so thick that diamond point drills couldn’t get through my scales.” I sighed, recalling the many memories of bad guys floundering at how tough I was.
Now look at me. A shell of my former self. It’s still hard to believe that being a janitor is the right class for me.
“My dad has tough scales too but you went right through them. Oh, come this way.”
He moved away from me and I missed his presence already. I never thought I’d be crushing on someone at my ripe old age of 130 years old but here I am.
Guy led me through the muddy waters until we were deep into mushroom territory. He ducked underneath a door of a familiar building covered roof to foundation in purple neon mushrooms. Unlike the outside, there was no water here.
“Where are you taking me? Tell me this isn’t some poor attempt to show me your cool hiding spot so you can get to third base?”
“Third, what? What’s that?”
Oh god. The cultural gap is gonna kill me before his dad does.
“Third base has two meanings. One is about sports but the other basically means you’re getting a blow job.”
Why am I explaining this to him? I should try to keep him as innocent as long as I can.
He blinked and pressed a button on a wall. A series of whirring and clicks opened up a side panel.
“I have no idea what a blow job is but what I need to show you is through this door, so if you’d please…” He bowed and motioned for me to come through.
Why am I only attracted to and attracting adorable virgins? God must love testing me.
I had to duck to go under but as the door closed behind me, It was pretty clear why he wanted to keep this place a secret: it was basically a shrine to me and my team. The room was massive, easily big enough to be a 4 car garage. Each wall was covered in pictures of either me or one of the members of my squad in action. Newspaper clippings with quotes circled and highlighted hit me first.
“Wow. Okay I’ll say it, I’m officially whelmed.”
“I know it seems like a lot but I found this place years ago and just…I couldn’t get rid of it.” Guy traced his fingers over the pictures, the awe dripping from his voice. He stopped with one of mine standing atop a ruined giant robot, his thumb gently caressed it. “You all were amazing.”
I won’t ask him but I’d bet my left breast that he’s probably beat off in this room before…to pictures of me, probably. Or maybe I’m just a crude asshole, who knows.
Gently removing a group picture of me, Wyatt, Liam and Vega, I choked back a sob and turned my back on him. He didn’t need to see this.
“I’m sorry. I should have known seeing all this would have been a lot for you. But I wanted you to know that you’re not crazy. That statue was put up decades ago by someone who wanted to ruin you.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know. I’ve spent the better part of half my life trying to figure it out with no luck. It was made before my dad was even born so maybe it was a villain from your past? Dr. Clover maybe? How about Bloodlust?”
I shook my head, still holding the picture. I can still remember the taste of the ice cream we all ate that day. That’s also the day we figured out Liam was lactose intolerant and Vega definitely had a thing for him because she never left his side—even when he was shitting his guts out.
Fat tears fall onto the photo and I wipe them off in a hurry.
“Can I keep this one?”
“Of course!”
“Do you know what happened to them? To Liam and Vega and Wyatt?”
His eyes flickered to gem on my chest but I waved the idea off.
“This is just Wyatt’s mind dumped out onto a holographic tactile projector. He doesn’t even have all of it. Plus, I want to bury his body and put my mind at ease.” I’d been ignoring that ache inside for a while, that hole in my heart due to my wifely duty. In my mind, till death do us part doesn’t count if I can’t put him to rest.
“I wish I knew where his body was but…I think he might be in this half of the city somewhere.”
Sniffling, I crossed my newly fully healed arms.
“What makes you say that?”
“Because this room? All the information? It belonged to him.”
I could feel my color draining, the air became far too fucking thin all of a sudden.
“What?”
Guy nodded. “I found it when I was a teenager, running away from home–don’t ask.” I didn’t need to. His dad was obviously an authoritative abusive piece of shit. “Anyway, I found this place after saying his name. God, you shoulda heard me Sapph. I probably sounded like a raving lunatic when I fell and nearly broke my knee getting here.”
“You said his name? Why?”
“It’s on the panel outside that I pressed, along with a small hole. I could never figure out what it was for but the more I look at that gem on your chest…”
I grasp it automatically and my shoulders slump. More secrets, of course there’s more.
“Get out here, Wyatt.” I whispered, numb and so very fucking exhausted.
He appeared, looking as tired as I felt. Wyatt didn’t acknowledge the room or Guy, just me.
I’m so done with all the bullshit. This has gone on long enough.
“It’s time you be honest with me for once in your fucking life.”
