We stood in an alleyway away from the hideout, surveying the scene. Each mushroom house hybrid had their doors kicked open, families dragged into the streets. I wanted nothing more than to leap in there and intervene but I’m not that much of an idiot. Anymore.
“Sapph, you’re not saying anything.” Guy reminded me with a whisper.
“I know, I know. Gimme a second.” This would be easier if I didn’t have so much drama with Wyatt right now. A clearer head might do me wonders.
A capp child cried out for its mother, arms outstretched as it reached for her. The guards held them apart, almost cruelly though it was hard to tell with their masks on. I turned to Wyatt and groaned when I noticed he was gone. That made it even worse!
I’ve never been completely on my own in a fight like this before but I’m not really alone, I have Guy.
“Guy.”
“Yes?”
I glanced at the top of his head, “can you see anything above your head right now?”
He looks up, blinks a few times, but frowns. “Nothing but the sky, beautiful.”
“Focus.Dammit if you can’t see it…do you feel any different at least?” The superhero class title sat above his head like a neon sign, glaring in blue and white. It was almost a little obnoxious.
“Like earlier when we fought my dad? No. And I hate that.” He pondered for a moment, rubbing his chin like Wyatt. It was a little cute, honestly. “Look, if you see something, can you interact with it at all? You’re a better dragon than me; I’m just a runt.”
“You are many things, Guy, but you are no runt…and you might be less crazy than you sound.”
I’m out of options, but fuck it, let’s try it. My hand reached up above his head, pressing the word SUPERHERO. It exploded in a puff of smoke, scaring me enough to make me squeal.
Oh hell, that got the guard's attention!
“Did you hear something?” “Yeah, sounds like we missed a Capp kid.” “Don’t let any of them escape!”
Smoke escaped my lungs as I coughed for dear life as quietly as I could. We didn’t have time to run. Yet my hand felt heavier. When I opened it up, I saw a nametag. Guy’s nametag.
Master Custodian authority recognized. Job placement in progress. Please pin the name tag to your newest employee.
I’m sorry, what?! Where did that voice come from?
Heavy footsteps sloshed through the marsh water, drawing closer with every passing second. Cursing softly, I looked Guy square in the eyes.
“Don’t move, okay? Also, welcome to your new job.”
“What?” I pinned the badge to his uniform, accidentally catching some of his skin with the needle on the back.
“Ouch! Hey—oh. Oh, I don’t feel good right now.” He got to one knee, holding his gut just as the guards bounded around the corner of the alleyway.
“Is that her?” “Holy shit, I think we found her!” “Get her!”
I heard their guns go off, felt the air change with pressure, dread pooling in my belly. But the impact never came. A warm presence enveloped me, leaving a dark shadow over the alleyway.
It was Guy, or should I say Guy Dynamo, complete with nametag and superhero costume, just like in Sanctuary. I smiled so hard my face started hurting.
“Okay, one, why do I have a voice in my head now? It’s not a bad voice, it's just weird. Two, holy shit I finally have my powers back.”
“Back?” I raised a brow, smirking. “You’ve only had them in dreams, right?”
He blushed, turning towards the guards. “Yeah, yeah. Anyway, I got these guys. You focus on staying safe—” he paused, shoulders relaxing as he winked at me, “Cleanup girl.”
My heart fluttered. He remembered? Across time and dreams, he remembered the name he gave me. Swoon later, run now, idiot.
Guy barreled into them, fists forward like a torpedo, knocking them over like pins at a bowling alley and he was the ball. He took their weapons, their gear, their clothes leaving them all completely naked and vulnerable. And then he picked them up, one by one and tossed them over the wall.
“Now you’re just showing off!” I yelled at him between cupped hands. I can’t be mad, I’d do the same thing. Besides, they’d be fine; dragons and their descendants are hardy people.
“You love it!” Damn him. I did love it, his ass could certainly move in that spandex.
Glancing at the tactical gear floating in the water, I sucked it and the guns up with recycle. I’d store it for later in case I needed it or better yet just to keep it out of those assholes' hands.
As usual, Guy was busy showboating. He’d take out swathes of guys with his godlike strength and speed, but there was always at least one or two people he couldn’t get to. Though it’s not really his fault, he’s just one person.
But he’s got me.
“Fuck this. I’m killing at least one of these monsters before he gets me!” One of the cowards hissed, holding his gun up to one of the capp children. Their heads were smaller, less wide than their parents but no less of a target.
Damn it…oh! Here’s hoping I don’t fuck it up.
My tail snatches the gun right out of his hands. He’s shocked for a moment and looks around trying to see who did that. When he looked toward me, I stuck my tongue out at him.
“You!”
“The one and only, baby!” I giggled.
He pulled a knife out of one of his pockets, rushing towards me. Not a smart move. Using the water as cover, I grabbed him by the ankle and lifted him up, tossing him around in a circle before chucking him. I wasn’t strong enough to throw him over the wall but into a nearby brick wall? That’ll do just fine.
“Sapphyra!” Silla called out, rushing over to pick up the child.
“Silla! Are you and Corre alright? I know Guy is working his ass off to save everyone–”
“Already taken care of .” Guy smugly admitted, floating back down beside me.
“I’m fine, Silla. Thank you for saving our niece, Sapphyra. That’s twice you’ve come to our aid.”
“It’s fine. I’m built for it…just like this man over here.” I bumped my hip into Guy, making him blush.
Our eyes met, and great—now I’m blushing too. Still, I can’t get too distracted.
“How long do you think it’ll take for them to come back?” I pondered aloud.
“Not long, but at least we know they’re looking for you. That one should have been a given honestly.”
“Yep…if that’s the case, let’s roll out the welcome mat for when they come back.” My lips curled into a devilish grin as I let the ideas flow.
