Sapphyra
I don’t know why I thought 48 hours of peace was weird. I should have been using that time to rest my mind, get my body right for the battles ahead. Instead, I used it to meticulously map out the landscape and rebuild a few houses along the way.
“You’re still staring at the map?” Guy asked, coming up behind me. His arms encircled my waist and I leaned back into his embrace.
The energy turned charged whenever he came around—a presence meant to anchor me. For once I wasn’t fretting about my relationship status, I was in survival mode.
“Of course I am. I have to get this right. They could show up at any moment and the better I’m prepared, the safer we’ll all be.”
“Hmm.” Nothing else, just a quiet hum that was definitely more than that.
“What aren’t you saying, Guy?”
“Me? Nothing.”
“Guy…” That slight change in my tone made him chuckle.
“Okay, fine. I think you’re carrying it all on your back like you’ve always done. I get it, it’s what’s worked for you but you’re a builder now, goddess. So when you need something broken, call on me. When you need somebody punched into a building, I’m your man.”
“Mm, and when I need someone to annoy me with a very cozy chest to lean into, I should call you?”
“Damn right you should.” Even with our height difference, it felt so easy to slide into his arms. Like we were two puzzle pieces connecting.
“Guy?”
“Yes.”
“Distract me. Just for a little while—” I squirmed as his lips found my neck, “not like that!”
“Aw. Yeah, sure, way to get a man’s hopes up. How would you like me to distract you?”
“That festival you were telling me about, has it happened yet?” His arms loosened ever so slightly.
“It happens tomorrow, actually.” His voice lowered. I turned around to face him, frowning.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
‘Would it have mattered?”
“A little! I don’t know, I would have done something for you. Maybe asked for a ceasefire or something.” My breath hitched when he grasped my shoulders firmly.
“Never and I mean never, ask that motherfucker for anything. Understood?” Well damn, that’s a side of Guy I never thought I’d see. Dominant is sexy, universal facts.
“Loud and clear boss.”
His eyes crinkled, and a smile followed. I cleared my throat and turned back to the map.
“Don’t. Let’s go for a walk or something. Besides, have you checked on Wyatt today? He talking at all?”
My shoulders slump and I head for the door instead of answering him.
“I’ll take that as a no.”
“I don’t know why he’s not answering. It’s been days, he should be charged enough to talk a little bit at least…unless he doesn’t want to talk to me.” Half sad, half angry, I tried to brush off my feelings as the afternoon sun shined down on us through the mass of giant mushrooms. You could make a game out of avoiding the sun, hiding from stalk to stalk.
“He’s an idiot but not that much of an idiot.” Guy snorted. “Besides, why would he leave you alone with me that long? Doesn’t sound like he’s that much of a super genius after all.”
“Guy—” I wanted to tell him that Wyatt probably just didn’t see him as a real rival for my heart. And my body’s pleasure wasn’t his primary concern, which is why he let Guy touch me at all.
“What?” he tilts his head, waiting for an answer I can’t give.
So instead, I just say, “he’s stubborn. Wyatt does what he wants, when he wants. Trying to force him to move on your time will just end in disaster.”
Which was true, much as I hate to admit it.
“I get that. But let’s not talk about that. Hey, you asked about the festival right? It’s pretty fun. See, everyone wakes up with these, like, spectral eggs floating over your head.” He was so animated already—I’d never seen his eyes get that big with excitement before.
“I’m sorry what?” I snorted. That’s fucking cute.
“Yeah! Oh, Sapph, it’s fucking awesome. On the day of the festival, you wake up with your egg. Now, technically, you can crack it open at any time—”
“And why would you wanna do that?”
He paused, blushing. A nervous laugh escaped him as he ran his fingers through his silky black hair. When had his hair grown to shoulder length? Have I been blind this whole time or was Guy changing right in front of me?
I’ve been so distracted lately…I have to do better for him.
“I don’t uh…we don’t have to—”
“Spill the beans, mister!” I point a finger at his chest, jabbing him twice. I hated how his muscles rippled beneath my fingertip—tight and coiled.
Guy raises his hands in shy surrender, “okay, okay! I yield! The egg…you can crack it open and it will lead you to your soulmate—should they be alive.”
Why did that make my stomach drop? “Oh yeah?”
We stopped, under a shady shroom, gazes locked.
“Yeah.”
“You ever crack open yours?” I leaned against the stalk, smirking at him, trying to play down my fear. Fear that I had absolutely no right to have. If Guy belonged to someone, I should be pissed he didn’t tell me—and upset that he left them alone for so long!
“A couple times.” There was something he was leaving out.
“And? Don’t leave me in suspense! Tell me you’re not holding out on a lover.”
“Mm.” He crossed his arms and smirked at me. “Why? Would that make you jealous?”
Hell yes and I hate that it does.
“Jealous? Me—no, and stop trying to distract me. Guy, just tell me what happened.”
“Well, when I crack it open early—because I’m an impatient man—” he stops, tucking a strand of my hair behind my ear. I gulped. A sense of dread took root at my feet in the marshy waters. Something cool brushed against my thighs, making me look down.
It wasn’t dread on my thighs, it was the water!
Guy and I look up at each other at the same time.
I couldn’t scream his name as something dragged me under the water. The last thing I saw was his hand reaching for me.
