Sapphyra
When I went back to headquarters and hid away in our bedroom, all I wanted was a little peace—room to breathe after all the bullshit from Ernie's.
Instead, I got my body screaming at me like it does at the worst time every year. Heat. I fucking hate that word, it makes me feel like nothing more than an animal. But dragons are supposed to be the intellectual ones, the apex predators, top of the food chain blah-blah-blah.
As if.
I suppose I could just call the boys in and show them how much pain I’m in, but…I don’t deserve any kind of bliss right now. So, like a pathetic chump, I stuck a pillow between my thighs and pressed them tightly together. Not enough to get me off but enough to make the ache even worse.
Perfect.
I would sit like that all day if I had to. At least until my heart had a chance to calm down. Maybe after that I’d take care of this. Although I’m struggling not to think about it. I can’t help it, the scene just plays over and over again in my mind.
Wyatt. When he forced Rhea to submit…it didn’t hit me then like it does now. My clit throbs as it plays again.
“That is a mother!”
I rap my knuckles against my forehead. “Stop it. He’s done shit like that before and it always appalls me. Don’t do this.” a hiss escapes me as my tail smacks my breasts and points at the door. Glaring at it, I hold back the urge to grab it and bite the shit out of it.
“No.”
It points at the door again, insisting.
“No! Stop it. I’m not giving in to whatever fucked up thing you want to happen. They know I need time and I’m not rushing it. Neither should you! We just lost our son a second time for god sakes!”
It deflates just a little and weakly points at my belly, then the door.
A sigh escapes me. “No, I am not going to get pregnant again to fill the void. Besides, it’s not the right fucking time.”
It frowns at me and mimics Wyatt pushing up his glasses. Then it slams against the wall and makes an outline of Wyatt.
“Yes. I know his body is solid for however long he’s got. I.Don’t.Care. Leave me the fuck alone.” I cross my arms and turn on my side, facing the wall.
It strained to reach the door but I refused to budge. No one was going to force me to move before I was ready…and after Rhea, I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready again.
I can still feel Barnaby's body in my arms. Choking back a sob, I bite into my thigh pillow and let the tears dry on it.
“I miss my baby.” A whine ripped through me. I didn’t stop it, I’m so tired of holding back my emotions. I’m tired of being the strong one and the weak one at the same time.
That’s when the room started shaking. Something broke through the building but there was no impact. Like an airplane flying way too close to the surrounding buildings.
Normally I’d get up, go confront the danger. But I’m not a hero anymore, I’m a janitor. And for the first time since I woke up from Sanctuary, I don’t even want to be that.
But Guy and Wyatt…they probably need me. My tail tapped my shoulder a few times, making me roll over. Again, it wanted me to leave.
“I really don’t want to.” I admitted, slowly sitting up in bed. It was probably another titan attack and part of me just wanted to let the boys handle it. But I knew better. Even if they won, the titans were ordered to fight me—they wouldn’t stop.
With a sigh and a grimace, I stood up slowly and shuffled out the door. Me? Shuffling. Sweet fuck, I’m pathetic.
But some movement is better than none.
I head to the training area where the boys said they’d be—and come face to face with a titan. Not just one but two. I doubt they were husband and wife but what would I know about what a healthy relationship looks like?
“Alright. I’m here. Are you two the freak of the week? Because I gotta be honest, I’m just not feeling it today.” I leaned my body against the doorway, holding on to it like I was the drunk friend at a party.
One of them, a man with golden skin and short curly black hair wearing a toga, turned to me. He hovered off of the ground, held aloft by wings. His sneer mirrored my soul.
I might go goth after this.
“You’re…her? Our fearsome dragon empress?”
“It’s dragon queen but go off.”
“Whatever. Rupert said you’d be up for a brawl in the skies, ready to duke it out like the gods we are…but look at you.” He circled around me. “You have no wings. You can’t move without them—like the boy.”
“I’ll have you know I’m a man, uncle Hyperion.” Guy called out, shaking his fists.
The golden man rolled his eyes. “Bah. You’ll be a boy until you hit 52 like me. In the meantime, I can’t fight you like this. Get some back bone, some fire in your eyes and then we’ll do this.”
I shrugged, turning to the woman. I could feel Wyatt’s eyes on me but I couldn’t give him the time of day right now.
Her skin was a lighter blue than the water maintenance couples used to be. Her hair was short and fluffy and white. She wore a toga just like Hyperion. I wanted to ask if she’d been tampered with as well by Rupert but I just didn’t have the energy.
“You gonna judge me too?” I asked, mouth tugging downward.
“No. In actuality, I want to help you. If nothing else but to give Hyperion a fair fight so he’ll shut up about it. You should have heard him, boasting about how he’d whoop you in one go and now look at him.”
Her look of contempt towards the man-baby next to her raised my spirits a little.
“Oh! Allow me to introduce myself.” She bows. “I am Theia. Titan of sight and I bring you information about the thing you’ve seen but can’t quite grasp.” The glint of amusement in her eye annoyed me.
“What?” I took a step towards her, trying to wrap my head around her gibberish.
“The class system, Sapphyra. I’m going to help you control it.”
