“Not there…maybe there?” I muttered while staring at a map.

You’d think, with Cyran being my home city and all, that I could just pick out what I wanted and go. But nope. It’s harder than I thought, not just because of the location but because of how extensive the damage is.

Penny’s house was one thing but there are skyscrapers with intricate designs and bus depots…

Shit.

Maybe I should just be honest with myself. I’m nervous. This whole thing has me in a chokehold. From the fights with the Titans to the responsibility of the class system weighing on my shoulders. I liked it better when all I had to do was punch bad guys and be home in time for dinner.

[You know you have people to ask for help, right? You have resources, dummy. Use them.]

I rolled my eyes.

“Thought I put your ass on mute.”

[You’re too busy stalling to do that. Seriously though, ask Wyatt. You love his big brain.]

“Not a chance.” I needed to do this on my own.

[Sapph. Sapphy-baby if you’re not gonna use his big brain then maybe you should give him some brain.]

“Are you out of your mind? Sex is the last thing on my mind right now.” I say that but I’m constantly squeezing my thighs together. I’m shoving cloth into my pants to soak up my shame.

[No, I’m in your mind. And you are in heat. Listen, for all you know, a good lay will clear your head and help you heal some of that ache inside you.]

Everytime I close my eyes, I picture Barnaby’s smiling face. My hand jumps to my belly on instinct. Something breaks inside me all over again but I won’t repeat that heartache—not now.

Not without putting Wyatt's body to rest.

I scoffed and poured over the map once more. Tapping my chin, I sighed and picked out a spot.

“Not a chance. The last thing I need right now is a distraction from the two men I shouldn’t be bothering.”

[They’re your men. It will never be a bother—not to them.]

She was right. I hated her because she was right. But I couldn’t go back to them—not right now. If I gave in to my heat, it couldn’t be here. And fuck me but it's too complicated with Wyatt missing his body. He’d have to use Guy again and I’m not sure I can take the guilt.

[Sapphyra, your serotonin level is 88. That is far too low.]

“And?” I started packing up a small bag of homemade mushroom snacks. “I’ll take a nap when I get finished with the first building I work on, deal?”

[Sigh. I suppose it’ll have to do. If it drops any lower, your ass might go into a depressive coma.]

I chuckled and shook my head, already out the door with the bag slung over my shoulder.

“That’s not a real thing.”

[Okay. Keep playing with your mental and physical health. See if I care.]

Considering that it's my body holding her in place, she absolutely cares, even if she won’t admit it.

A tap on my shoulder made me pause. My tail pointed towards the direction the boys had taken off too but I shook my head.

“Enough. First System, now you. I’m not bothering them with this. When it's time for me to fight, then I’ll yell for help but—” My face twisted to the side with the force of something smacking me across the face. My eyes widened in horror—it was my tail and it looked pissed.

“What the fuck was that for?!”

Nothing but an angry face and another point at their bedroom door. I glared at it but refused to give in, heading for the door outside instead. A hard tug on my ass to go in the opposite direction made me break out in a cold sweat. I strained, struggling for control.

“Stop it!” I hissed at it through grit teeth. “I don’t need their help!”

But no matter how hard I pulled, my tail was not giving up. I gulped as their door opened up. Wyatt stuck his head out, raising an eyebrow at me. That's when my tail decided to let go. The snap back sent me to the floor, bouncing twice on my ass.

“Ow.”

“Sapph, you okay?” He asked, reaching out a hand to help me. I moved without it, shaking my head.

“I’m fine.” Two tail slaps against the ground let him know I was lying.

Wyatts face formed into a hard line but he didn’t protest. It was then that I noticed the sweat dripping off of his face. Wait, sweat?

“Wyatt?” I ask, pointing at the floor near his feet. Small droplets of water hit the ground.

“I haven’t gone back to being a ghost…yet.” He sighed, that’s when I noticed his glasses were gone. His amber eyes have always drawn me in but not like right now. I didn’t need that distraction right now, I needed my sanity.

“Right…that’s nice.” Standing, I turn away from him. My heart beats against my chest as I fight my own body for control.

“Sapphyra…princess. What did I do—recently?” Did he have to throw on such a husky voice? His words dripped with longing for me and it was rattling my core. Dammit.

“Nothing. Not recently anyway.”

“Then why can’t you face me?” I heard him take a step closer to me. I shook my head, hiding behind my tight pink curls.

“Because if I face you I might…” he grasped my hand, interlocking out fingers. Oh god. It was real, his touch was real and it was everything I remembered. I snatched my hand back like it was on fire.

“Sapphyra, I don’t know how long this will last.” He pleads with me. “Let me take care of you, at least once while we have this.”

I blew out a shaky breath and clenched my hands.

“Wyatt, I want to—believe me—I’m in heat. I want to be with you like you wouldn’t believe but I can’t. I’m sorry, I just can’t.” My throat clenched, and I struggled with raw emotion breaking me.

The door loomed before me, sunlight streaking in like a saving grace. I could almost taste freedom on my tongue. So close.

But then he wrapped his arms around my waist. “Baby.” He almost never calls me baby, only in the tiniest of tender moments.

My shoulders slumped. I dropped the bag and turned around to face his love head on. Dipping my head down to taste his lips. I felt like I was drowning and breathing him in at the same time. Maybe I was.

“Oh…Wyatt.” Fuck it all. I’ll give in, just this once.
