Sapphyra
The light was gone. No more blinding aura…but that meant no more Wyatt too. The room had cooled down finally although I had to wonder. Since when did heat bother me?
“You can open those eyes now, goddess.”
Oh. Oh that voice was so not Wyatt or Guy. What had we unleashed?
I wish I kept my eyes closed. With just one glance, the man in front of me took my breath away and made my uterus stand up and take notice. Hell no.
“Nope. Not doing it.” I turn around and walk out of the room.
“Did I do something wrong, goddess?” I heard his voice but I would not give in to temptation, not again dammit!
“Nope. You stay right there, I have a city block to rebuild.” His voice trailed after me. I couldn’t stop because stopping meant looking at him again. Looking at him meant I’d probably be spreading my legs like a centerfold. I’ve had enough of that.
Leaping away was easy enough…and I made sure to grab my shirt and pants on the way out. The block I chose wasn’t far from Ernie's. Maybe it was nostalgia guiding me but I wanted to fix this place up just the way I remembered it. Or at least clean it the fuck up.
I walked through the cracked city streets, feet sinking into the muck and fungus infested waters. A few frogs hopped along rusted cars that had grown stuck to the ground over time.
“Damn. Feels like a tornado ran a marathon through here. Was it all just the monoliths or was there a second disaster that came through?”
For some reason, I expected the system to answer. What I got was a hell of a lot less pleasant.
“Earthquakes mostly. Things shifted around after—hey wait!”
I didn’t stay for the history lesson. The moment his voice hit me, I leapt away. I had to be careful though, getting close to the dividing wall meant I’d be dealing with Rupert's guard dogs. Although dealing with them seemed a hell of a lot easier than fighting my body right now.
“Sapphyra! Wait! Talk to me!”
That was Guy…no it was Wyatt? Why couldn’t things have been simpler like not having my husband's body be in the wind? Or not having a golden retriever soulmate that I’ve absolutely treated like shit and that I don’t deserve?
I just wanna rebuild a stupid building—any building—and get my wings back! Why is that such a big ask?
“No.” I frowned. Not a normal one, a full on tantrum frown like I belonged in a cartoon. I felt him land behind me, a dark presence that reminded me of Wyatt’s silent entrances.
“Heh, you’re cute like that. Will you please look at me? I just want to talk to you.”
He moved in front of my face. I turned. It was like a dance and my god we were in sync.
“No. I’m not letting you distract me! That’s all this has been for the past hour! One big distraction. I just wanna do this stupid task and go on to fight Hyperion and be done with it all!” My lungs burned. I was out of breath and straining from too many sources.
My heat wanted him, wanted me to give in. I’d already made that mistake once and look where it got me?
I picked a building, a small bodega nestled between two crumpled townhomes. It shouldn’t be too hard to refurbish it.
“Vacuum.” A lot of debris got sucked up into my void but some pieces were still too big. I broke them, happily. The stress relief from destruction never felt so fucking good. A groan ripped from me when I heard him tearing up rubble too.
He was being helpful. I should be thanking him.
“I’m sorry.” he said quietly, this stranger that took the place of both Wyatt and Guy.
“For what? It’s not your fault your creation killed the only people I ever really loved.” Ouch. I stopped and stared at the ground. That wasn’t what I meant…no, I did. I still could have said it better.
“I’m sorry.” My shoulders slumped. “I shouldn’t have said that. I’m just frustrated.”
“I know. I have their memories—their minds in me. They miss you…and I feel what they feel.” His voice was low and full of longing. He was right behind me.
“I won’t touch you unless you tell me to. You are in control here, Sapphyra.”
Mm . Control. I’ve had so little of that these past weeks? Months? I couldn’t even tell you what month it is. It’s spring time and that's the best I could do. The clock and date system fizzled out within Beacon headquarters a while ago.
“What do you want?” I crossed my arms.
“Just look at me. I want you to see me right now. See me, goddess.”
I bit the inside of my cheek and sighed, long drawn out and frankly fucking exhausted…he wins.
Before I ran away, I only got a glimpse of him. Now I can analyze him fully. He felt so familiar, like a perfect blend of Wyatt and Guy. His skin was darker than Guys but lighter than Wyatts. His hair was curly like Guys but short, black and with a stripe of white in it like Wyatts. His cheekbones weren’t sharp like Wyatt's but rounded just enough like Guys. His height put mine to shame. He must have been close to 9 ft tall, and for once I had to look up at someone I wasn’t fighting.
But his eyes…they were the kicker. Deep amber like Wyatt’s but the longer he looked at me, the bluer they got until you couldn’t tell where one color stopped and the other started.
If I wasn’t careful, I’d be lost in those eyes with him on top of me.
The clothes he wore. Stylish but breathable, a blend of his creators. Black pants, not too tight…more like tailored. His whole outfit looked tailored honestly. Black belt with a gold trim on the buckle. Leather shoes, probably Italian but they seemed athletic too. His shirt had one large white stripe on the right side of his chest. He wore a coat—black on the outside and white on the inside—with a popped collar but the sleeves were cut off, showing off his bulging biceps.
“Come here.” I whispered.
He smiled sheepishly, happy at my approval. That’s all Guy, right there. When he got close enough, I raised a hand and rubbed his cheek. No beauty mark like Guys but on either side of his cheeks, there was a mark. Two black dragon wings.
I let out a shaky breath, searching his eyes for my men. A little part of me broke when I didn’t find them.
“Do you have a name?”
He closed his eyes, contemplating.
“Yes. My name is Noa.”
“Noa. I like it.” He smiled softly and pressed the hand I held to his cheek.
“Do you see me yet?” That question was loaded but I wouldn’t go deep with an answer. I had work to do.
“It’s hard to do anything else, buddy.” Smirking, I pulled away from him. It was adorable how his face leaned into my hand as it dropped.
“Don’t start pouting. If you wanna help, start breaking down other pieces of the leftover buildings.” Gotta keep em’ busy. Busy means less room for the horny.
“Easy. That’s light work.”
I smirked and watched him go at it and I vacuumed up the rest of the debris.
“Refurbish!” The bodega came back, good as new—if not creepy as hell. It was too dark inside.
“Hey system, remind me to find an electrician to hire.”
[Adding it to your invisible to do list. You’re welcome by the way.]
Bitch. I love her though.
[By the way, your serotonin levels have risen to 90. Good on you for taking my advice.]
“Shutup.” I bit back.
[So mean. You’ll scare away your new boytoy like that.]
My cheeks darkened. “Will you stop it! He’s not a boytoy.” I would have laid into her but my legs decided to turn into jello. I almost hit the ground if it wasn’t for Noa catching me.
“Careful my goddess. We should get you some food and some rest.”
[I would listen to that certified daddy. He knows what he’s talking about. Also, you’ve used one out of five refurbishes today.]
I went from embarrassment, to anger to confusion in 15 seconds.
“One out of five what?”
