Sapphyra
I wanted to say that I was surprised, but fuck it. Who could be surprised by that?
Oh, it turns out my husband has been lying to me all this time? Surprise surprise! I mean really what was I suspecting? It might have been easier to take it if he actually been a murderer.
No way that's wrong, I shouldn't say that. I hate myself right now.
“You seem like you're beating yourself up over something that has nothing to do with you really.” I heard Guy behind me trying to console me.
Shaking my head, I walked off further into the murky waters, the familiar room temperature dark waters wrapped around my ankles.
“Oh are we going for a walk?”
“Not we, me.”
I wasn't looking at him but I could tell he was frowning.
“Guy I know you care, but now I really need to just be alone okay?”
“I mean I hear you. My question is why do you need to be alone?”
I scoffed, sticking my hands in my pockets.
“What do you mean why do I need to be alone? Did you not just hear all of what just happened?” Left eye twitching, I tried to keep my rising anger in check. He didn’t deserve the backlash.
“I've been humiliated, lied to and held captive by an asshole who felt so guilty for hurting another woman that he would lie to his own wife for a century!” Too late, now the spittle is flying from my mouth.
“And me? I continued to believe him! I continued to believe that he would get better, that he loved me and cared for me—that I could trust him, you know all the shit that they tell you when you get married to somebody right?”
It’s all a fucking joke.
By now tears were streaming on my face, hot and angry. Guy nodded, understanding and patient as always.
“I get that and you're right. Your feelings are 100% valid but I'm saying why do you have to go through this alone? He might be your husband but he hurt everybody when he did that, not just you.”
Had he really? I can’t be that blind…can I?
My shoulders drooped, fists unclenched. All the fight was draining out of me. I leaned into Guy’s chest sobbing quietly.
Nah, I was bawling my eyes out like I've been dumped on prom night. I was wailing like a banshee.
“I know that but it hurts so bad Guy. I don't have any more tears to cry for this asshole. I feel so fucking numb which should be impossible because I want to believe there's good in everybody somewhere but all I get from him is emptiness.”
There was no shame as I wiped my snotty nose on his chest. He didn’t mind, bless this man.
“All I get is half truths and lies baked around the idea that it’s to protect me. He patronized me ,knocked me out, that's why I'm like this now! I am so fucking broken.”
Listen to me whining like a little bitch. Ugh, I wasn’t even this pathetic over Barnaby.
“He took away my dragon and caged it up—injected his stupid system. He made me the Master Custodian of the world but who signed up for that?! I didn't sign up for that shit! And yet I'm expected to do all of it? He put all of that on me without telling me anything!”
Who does that to their spouse?
The more I talked the less heavy my heart felt but the colder it grew as well. Throughout all of it Guy just held me. When the top of my head felt cold I realized he was crying too. He was just as hurt as I was but it seems impossible.
Wyatt and I have years of history between us but once again I seem to be underestimating Guy and the connection that was pushed on him by the goddess.
“Guy I am so sorry.”
“Sorry for what?”
“ I'm sorry that you have to deal with him. That you have such a sorry excuse for a fated mate I am deeply sorry.”
He swallowed. And it was a while before he opened his mouth but when he did, there was clarity in his words.
“I would rather have one sorry mate and one amazing mate at the same time than no mate at all.”
I looked up at him and wiped the tears from my eyes.
“Are you sure about that? Cuz I can be a pretty shitty person too, especially when it comes to him.”
I couldn't bring myself to say his name.
Guy understood. He caressed my face, wiping away a stray tear with this thumb.
“Try to see it from my perspective. I've been the runt of my family—of all the dragons. Not only do I get this amazing class that you gave me with all the cool power that comes with it, I start unlocking my dragon side too, finally.”
Beaming like a dope, I couldn’t help but match his smile.
“And then it turns out my mate is the best superhero in the world. And even without your superpowers, even at the strength you are now—you are absolutely amazing and there's nothing you can do that will change my mind on that.”
“God you're so sappy.”
I smiled and I kissed him deep and slow. Our mouths molded together tongues folding over each other. Not a fight for dominance but a dance of comfort. His hands wrapped around my waist pulling me close against him. I could feel him aching against me, his length pressing against my crotch.
He pulled back blushing.
“I'm sorry that's so inappropriate right now," he admitted.
“Yeah it is but maybe it won't be inappropriate later you know after I've cried my eyes out a little more and just gotten away from all the bullshit.”
“Yeah that sounds like a plan. You plan on getting away from the bullshit by yourself? Cuz I can—-”
“No, no” I stopped him. “I want you with me.”
“Are you absolutely sure because I can—”
“Shut up Guy.”
He smiled,”understood shutting up now.”
Our fingers interlocked as we walked away from the trial, from the Titans, and from Wyatt—heading to Ernie's.
Along the way I couldn't help but feel there was a pair of eyes on us. I pulled down my goggles and looked up at Guy, softly smiled at him and just as casually as possible said
“Don't make any sudden moves but I think we're being followed.”
“Oh no should I be nervous?”
“No no, just give me a second.”
I leaned in close to his ear like I was about to whisper something scandalous and I said one word.
“Insight.”
My goggles activated and the surrounding area lit up like a christmas tree.
I could see the cracks in all the buildings, see where the weak points were and how best to bring them down. In between the cracks of a nearby building just shy of a whole the size of my fist I saw it the outline of a body. It was a vaguely familiar shape but I couldn't figure out who it was not without getting close.
“Guy, do you trust me?” I kissed his neck.
He shivered of course I trust you. His eyes widened.
“Wait, are you about to do something that's going to make me mad?”
“Yeah sorry about this.”
I picked him up and I tossed him into the building where the person spying on us was.
The wall came down and the building next to it which is the good news the bad news is that guy was also underneath all that rubble. He's sturdy, he'll be fine.
At least that's what I'm telling myself as I fly over to ranch through him at.
Imagine my shock when I pulled him and Theia out of the rubble.
