Sapphyra
I reached the hand down, clearing the rubble away as I pulled Theia straight out by her neck.
I didn't squeeze, not yet but I wanted to. Shit after the day I've had today she's lucky her head didn’t pop right off.
I stared at her in the face and I twisted up my mouth something fierce. I asked her one question.
"How long have you been spying on me? And don't you dare lie cuz I'll fucking know.”
She opened her mouth, gaping like a fish out of water.
“I'm sorry I had to.” I squeezed her neck a little harder. She was starting to turn colors. Guy pressed a hand to my shoulder, a subtle anchor pulling me back.
“That's not what I asked you. I asked you how long? I don't care about the reason. How fucking long? I'm not going to ask you again.”
I grimaced inwardly, using Wyatt's words. This is going to be harder than I thought. She clawed at my fist and my wrist trying to get me to open up my hand but I would not budge no matter how much she made me bleed.
“Sapph…” Guy quietly warned me. I knew how far to take it but it’s sweet that he cared.
“Months!” Theia wheezed out.
I dropped her and she hit the ground hard. She wheezed, gasping for air that just wouldn't get to her lungs.
“What was that? Did you say months?”
How had I been so blind?
“Yes, I've been spying on you for months. I didn't have a choice. I know you don't care about the reason but I really did not have a choice. My dad is sick.”
“And let me guess Rupert is the one with the cure for him.”
“Yes.” She shrank in on herself.
“And that's just supposed to make it okay that you've been stabbing me in the back this whole time?!”
She shook her head no and I can see the conflicting emotions in her face but honestly I could not give less of a fuck right now. I threw up my hands and I walked away in a circle and that circle turned into me pacing back and forth.
“Easy now, angel.”
I shook my head at Guy’s words. The last thing I wanted right now was for anything to be easy, except for me to easily rip myself from all these shitty situations that keep hitting me back to back.
“You know what Guy? Why don't you handle this interrogation you know. You're a superhero, you do it.”
He pointed at his chest, “me? I don't have any experience with this!”
“Yeah well it looks like it's time for you to get some. Trust me, learning on the job isn't that terrible…spoken by somebody who was trapped in a simulation for a century.”
Yeah that one had a little more bite to it than I intended but fuck it I'm pissed off and I have a right to be pissed off. Frankly I couldn't understand why Guy wasn't pissed off.
He scratched the back of his head and he looked at Theia with a raised brow.
“Okay so who are you spying on us for?”
I had to control my eyes to keep them from rolling. It was obvious she was spying on us for Rupert but I didn't want to say that out loud and take the wind out of his sails. This is his show. his spotlight, and he has to find the answers himself. Although Theia’'s face mirrored my confusion.
“I'm spying on you for Rupert. I'm sorry. I don't really have a choice…I think I just said that right?”
Guy blushed, giving an awkward smile.
“Sorry this is my first interrogation.
“It's okay.” Theia encouraged him with a slow head nod. “I think you're doing fine.”
I groaned, rubbing my hand down my face.
“I'm sorry angel, do you have any questions you'd like to ask?”
There was some sass in his voice but I wasn't going to intervene, not yet.
Shaking my head no, I assured him back to his task.
“Right okay,” he said getting back to it, “you said you've been spying on us for months. Is that back when Sapph first arrived?”
When Theia nods, Guy pales and lets out a shaky breath. His eyes widened in horror.
“By the goddess, that means you’ve seen everything we've done so far! Even the few spicy times we've had together?!”
Theia softly smiled, her ears turning red.
“I've seen probably more than I should have, yes.”
Guy looked like he was about to throw up.
“Nobody's giving you a performance review but me…and you were 10 out of 10 babe.” I chimed in, hoping to boost his confidence. “Besides, it's not like you're embarrassed we had sex right?”
“No I'm not embarrassed, especially not with you, “ he smiled sheepishly, “but I am grossed out that my dad watched me have sex with you. That's such an invasion of privacy.”
I shrugged, thoroughly used to villain bullshit.
“Trust me it's not the weirdest thing super villains do, honestly voyeurism is kind of at the top of their list. They like to have control of situations. And I would know, considering I married one.”
And Wyatt absolutely loved to watch me with my former partners—before we got married. A normal person would have called him a stalker and never looked back. Lucky for him I’m not normal and I’m into exhibitionism.
This is gonna haunt me forever, I think. Not just because of his actions but because some part of me is still stupidly defending him.
“What are you going to do with me now?” Theia asked.
“That depends. Is he still watching us right now?”
“No he's not watching us now. But he will get suspicious because I haven't been broadcasting my sight for the past few minutes.”
I wracked my brain for excuses.
“You don't ever get a chance to sleep? Maybe you took an early nap.”
“For about 2 hours a day.” She said that like that shit was normal.
“Shit, he's got you working slave hours.” I had to slow down and think.
“All right, here’s what you're going to do. You're going to use your power like normal and you're going to follow us like nothing ever happened. And if he asks you about it? You tell him a building fell on you cuz you were so busy focusing on us. Is that understood?”
“I understand,” Theia started “but I don't think he will believe it.”
Squatting down, I pressed a finger against her forehead. I could hear her whimper at the pressure.
“Then you'll just have to do your damndest to convince him now won't you?”
“Yes I will! Please don't hurt me.”
I removed my finger letting her breathe but I stood up and I took Guy’s hand back in mine. We continued on our walk to Ernie's.
“Great, now I'm going to have nightmares that everything I do is going to be watched on the big screen. My dad's just going to be staring at me.”
His thousand yard stare was making me bust a gut. I quickly covered my mouth, not wanting to upset him further.
“Oh this is awful.”
Grinning, I kissed Guy’s forehead and ran my fingers through his hair. He shivered at my touch and leaned into me.
“I get it don't worry but,” I paused for dramatic effect. “If he's watching, you know we could give him a really good show~”
I know my tone was probably as seductive as I could make it but considering all that happened to me today I doubt it sounded really sexy at all. Besides, Guy seemed incredibly clueless.
“Oh what did you have in mind, like a puppet show?”
Boy, I can really pick ‘em.
I sighed and patted his very meaty chest.
“You…never change. I love you just the way you are.” Himbo’s and supergeniuses. I must like the north and the south pole.
“Aw shucks, I love you too! Wait, where are we going to get puppets?”
“Forget the puppets Guy.” I gently cut him off.
Once we got to Ernie's I stepped inside. Something Guy said earlier struck a cord in me.
Puppets.
It feels like since I woke up here I've been a puppet in somebody's show. The most likely director would be Rupert, hell it could even be Wyatt. But what if it wasn't either of them?
What if it was somebody else?
With that one thought my blood ran cold and I sat down trying to pull away the thought that somebody else was fucking up my life for fun. Guy sat across from me in the booth and reached over clasping my hands.
“Hey, angel, what's wrong? Is it the puppet thing? Is it because we're still being watched?”
“No it's neither that I just…for some reason I'm getting the feeling that there's something else at play here.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Because the more I think about it, the less things actually make sense. If Rupert wanted me to play in his game there's a million different ways he could have done it? It's…it's almost like he's trying to pretend to be the villain for someone else to sit back and watch.”
“I'm not following you.” Guy said, scratching the top of his head.
Poor Guy. I bet all three of the hamsters in his head were trying to race in their little wheels like their lives depended on it.
I gave him a warm smile.
“Sometimes I forget that even though you have the superhero class you don't really have the experience that comes with it. But I'm telling you Guy, villains aren't like what you read in comic books. If they toy with you, it's almost assuredly followed up by something that is devastating.”
I examined him, spreading my palms out on the table. Guy seemed to finally understand how serious this was.
“And more often than not? They go for you where you're most vulnerable.”
Vulnerable.
I repeated the word letting it fall from my mouth like food back on my plate.
My gut, no not just that, my fucking womb clenched like someone had stabbed at it.
Something was wrong. I had to move.
My eyes widened and I shot up out of my seat and rushed to the door with Guy hot on my trail.
“What's wrong?! Where are you going in such a rush?”
I stopped, turned to him and said just one thing:
“I have to go visit my son's grave because if I'm right something truly evil has happened.”
Facing forward now, my gaze was now set on Beacon tower.
“And there's no coming back from it. For any of us.”
