Sapphyra

“Come again?” I blinked and waited for Guy to continue. “You know…who’s messing with us? Rupert? Because that's a given, honey.”

His mouth formed into a thin line. He probably thought I was patronizing him which…I might have been—though that wasn’t the intent. I’m just so tired lately, and I've been snapping at people who don’t deserve it.

I even yelled at Silla when she caught me in the hallway on the way out.

“I don’t trust that Barbie.” Silla had been adamant.

“You don’t know her like I do.” I tried to brush off SIlla’s concerns but looking back? That was shitty of me.

Silla, though, had thick skin for an anthropomorphic mushroom. She shook her massive head at me and frowned—it looked really creepy with no eyebrows, not gonna lie.

“She smells wrong, Sapphyra.” Her using my actual name and not builder or empress or something like that should have been my clue to listen and ask her what was wrong.

But instead, I was an absolute bitch.

“What the fuck would you know about how someone smells? You’re a mushroom that lives in a swamp all day.” Before I knew it I was in her face, glaring down at her.

“I was just—” I cut her off. God, her voice was so small then.

“Silla, I really don’t give a fuck.” I pointed down the hallway that held my friend. “She’s the only other person that knows what it’s like to be abused by Wyatt. Another friend from my past that I’m trying to protect. Why can’t you see that?!”

As I turned on my heel to take flight, I caught a glimpse of Silla’s eyes watering and her bottom lip trembling.

Fuck me. I’m no better than Wyatt.

“Sapph?” Guy snapped his fingers in front of my face a few times. Slowly the fog started to lift from my head. I gave him a weak smile. “You alright, angel?”

“Yeah, Guy. I was just lost in a memory for a second. You were saying something?”

“I was saying that the person who’s fucking with us right now is probably that Iapetus guy.”

It felt like someone hit me over the head with an idiot stick. Iapetus, of course!

“Our healing’s been sabatoged…” I mumbled in agreement.

“And the only person I know of that could do that is Iapetus.”

Someone cleared their throat around the corner from us. Noa’s tall ass peaked around the corner, offering a small smile. I groaned, not wanting to deal with him and his counterpart but If we’re doing this it's probably better to do it as a team.

Teams need trust though.

“You can come in, Noa.”

“Just me, goddess?” He asked, tentatively.

“I didn’t stutter.” Wyatt sighed. I couldn’t see him but I knew what that sound meant. “Princess—”

“Don’t call me that. You don’t get to call me that anymore.” My thumb rubbed the wedding band on my finger, itching to roll it off.

“Sapphyra, even if you hate me, we’re on a time clock right now.” Wyatt called out. “We don’t have a choice, and I’d rather not see what happens if we’re too far apart when our 24 hours are up.”

“Time clock?”

Guys shoulders slumped. “Shit. He means we have to form back into one body.” Guy leaned against the wall, pressing his forehead against the cool , moist tile.

“They really only gave us 24 hours?”

“Yep.” Noa added. “Had you stuck around with us, you might have known that.”

“Don’t start with me, pretty boy. Somebody has to try and keep us together.” Guy motioned towards the four of us. “Because all you seem capable of doing is standing ten toes down next to mr.do-no-wrong.”

Noa barked out a laugh and crossed his arms. “You can eat my ass, Guy.”

“Any other time, I’d tell you to bring it over here. Right now, I mean it; we’re falling apart.”

“We’re falling apart because you’re picking sides instead of trying to get everyone to talk it out!” Noa stepped forward, growling at Guy.

Noa and Guy were fighting? I couldn’t believe it, I thought they…my chest tightened—air escaped my lungs. The room was spinning.  All the strength left my legs and I was on the ground before anyone could stop it.

“Princess!” Wyatt was next to me first. Noa and Guy next, all with eyes full of fear.

“Don’t!” I could only get out one word as the panic attack commenced. This room, these people, my life—it was all colliding. My tail kept them all at arms length, keeping me safe in a circle.

“Sapph, tell us what you need, goddess.”

“She needs us to not be at each other's throats.” Guy started. He’d calmed down but his voice was firm and wise, like a village elder. Our village was falling apart, he was right.

“Sapph can feel our distress through our mate bond.”

Is that what this is? Am I tweaking because we’re fighting? It feels heavier than that, like my world is ending. And my stomach rolls every few minutes, like something wants to come up but can’t. I’m not even nauseous.

“We either have to all be in this together or watch her fall apart. So which one is it gonna be, boys?” Noa stood a few feet away, hands clenching at his side.

Wyatt peered at me from afar, examining me from any angle he could. I know that face, he’s assessing me. This time I’ll let him because I’m going out of my mind with anxiety.

“Noa.” Wyatt started, turning towards his wolf. “When I get my body back, will you take control? I’ll be in your mind and out of sight.” He didn’t look at me but I know that’s why he was volunteering.

Noa’s eyes widened, he took a step back. “Wyatt, I know you want to fix shit but that’s extreme. I’m supposed to be—”

“You’ve spent long enough in the background, don’t you think?” He sighed and stood up, holding out a hand towards Noa. “I want to do this, not just for us…” he turned to me, finally. Those amber eyes drew me in, even when I tried to fight with all my might—I couldn’t resist him.

Noa hesitated but eventually gave in and shook his hand. “Only if you swear it's temporary.”

“Hmph, can’t make it easy can you? Fine. Temporarily, I stay in the back and let you lead.”

Help me lead, you mean.” Noa corrected him. Wyatt rolled his eyes. In his mind he’s still the professor, not the student.

Off to the side, Guy half-smiled at them but then turned back to me, worry written all over his face.

“Did that help at all?” He asked me. “I think Wyatt actually meant it.”

“No.” I gripped my belly and stood up, palms pressed to the wall.

“Sapphyra, your belly hurts? Are the mushrooms finally fighting back?” Wyatt asked with his very on-brand dry humor. But he wasn’t fooling me, I could hear the unasked question in his voice. There’s no time to talk about that, especially considering it shouldn’t be possible.

Time for a distraction.

“I need to go…go down to the basement.” Each word was like pulling water from stone, like they would fight like hell so they didn’t have to come out. Telling him this would send him in a spiral, probably.  Good. He needs to lose his shit like I’m losing mine.

“Why the basement?” Noa asked. “There any medicine down there?”

“No. But there is something—no, someone I need to see.”

“Sapph.” A plea, a warning all at the same time. Wyatt knew what I was talking about.

“I need to see Barnaby.” Exhaling slowly, I fought through the pain. “That's why I sent Guy here.”

Guy tried to hide his face from a glaring Wyatt. Noa was finally catching on, hands trembling.

“I have to dig up his grave.”
