Sapphyra
“Why are my hands on Valeria’s throat right now?” I whispered, taking in a quick glance at everything around me. Our ankles were steeped in familiar pink scales and Wyatt, Barbie, Guy, Noa, Zeke surrounded us.
“Because she’s the real villain here, Princess.” Wyatt softly told me. But my eyes were locked on the gun he held to her head.
Valeria rolled her eyes. “He gets to call you that when you are anything but a lowly princess.” She locked eyes with me, speaking with a raspy voice. “You are a force of fucking nature, Sapphyra…but your only drawback is him.”
My eyes widened and my stomach sank at her words. On some level, I knew she was right.
“Nope. Don’t listen to her, Sapph. Whatever problems you and I have, they pale in comparison to what she did.” He fired the gun right over her head and pressed the hot barrel tip to her shoulder. Valeria grits her teeth in pain, hissing slightly.
“Tell her what you did.” Wyatt leaned down to whisper menacingly. All sense of compassion left him the moment he looked at her.
I’ve never seen him this dark and angry.
“Ah, shit! Fine.” She huffed like she’d been inconvenienced, then she nodded her head towards Barbie. “I found Barbie and got her to confess about stealing your baby’s corpse.”
Wyatt shot her through the shoulder, the bullet went cleanly through and penetrated the floor. Valeria howled in pain.
“Wait! Stop, Wyatt—” he was going to kill her if I didn’t do something.
“She’s lying, princess. All she does is lie. It wasn't Barbie that did it, it was her.” I looked at him like he was speaking mandarin.
“Sapph, he’s trying to manipulate you again.” Valeria rasped as I gently pried my fingers off of her. Something wasn’t right. Too many voices in my head—need to shut them out. I finally came to a partial conclusion and cracked my knuckles.
“I can’t trust either of you.” This felt like the best answer for me. Either Wyatt was lying, again, and Valeria was right or Valeria had a hand in taking Barnaby and Wyatt was right.
“You shouldn't trust them. You should kill them.”
One voice made my breath catch in my throat. My spine straightened out and I stood on alert, quickly turning around to face Rupert. His normal aura was different. No longer a villain in presentation, his face seemed more relaxed and his clothes fit more loosely.
Did they ever fit him at all?
The wolf at his side caught my eye. “Midnight!?” Of course he wouldn't know that name, but that's what I called him. His ears flattened but he didn't acknowledge me…he was too busy whimpering at Wyatt.
Wyatt's hand faltered, he lowered the gun and to my surprise, he seemed happy. His smile was genuine and warm. He beckoned out a hand to Midnight. Midnight tried going to him but Rupert held the reins with an iron grip.
“Not yet.” Rupert said coolly. He nodded at me, watching me closely. “You want him, then she comes with me first.”
“What is he talking about, Wyatt?” I whispered to him, trying to get his attention. He was too focused on Midnight though. Noa and Guy stepped over to me while Zeke moved closer to Barbie.
“You can’t see it?” Noa murmured, wrapping an arm around my waist. “That’s our body.”
Well thats fan-fucking-tastic! Finally, some good news. Shit, how did I not see it before? It makes sense but with everything going on, it didn’t seem feasible. Feasible like being fought over by my husband and my torturer plus his wife.
What the hell has my life become?
Valeria attempted to take a step towards Rupert but stopped shy when Wyatt shot her in the leg, dropping her. The smell of the gun finally hit me; dragonsbane. The bullets must have been dosed in it which is why she’s not healing.
“You made these bullets for my wife?” Wyatt murmured. Valeria hissed and snarled at him. “No, not for her. For traitors like my “son” over there.” She glared at Guy.
“That’s…disturbing.” Wyatt murmured, scratching his chin. Guy wiped some sweat from his brow, grinning nervously at me. I smiled, it’s nice to know he’s still the same during this insane situation.
“How do you wanna play this, goddess?” Noa asked. His fingers lightly pressed into my hips and he pressed his chin on top of my head. His arm was across my stomach protectively.
My brows knit together as I watched Midnight struggle.
“Why isn’t he trying to kill you?” I asked Rupert.
He smirked. “Thats the right direction but wrong question. He knows who he belongs to.” His gaze roved over me, landing on my belly. “And you do too.”
Wyatt aimed his gun at Rupert but Midnight stood in the gun’s path.
Noa growled in my ear. I placed a calming hand on his arm, helping the tension release from his body. If I wasn’t careful, I’d end up losing someone I cared about today.
“Okay.” I said, shoulders squared. I walked forward with my head held high, gently escaping Noa’s arms. Noa and Wyatt both asked me, “are you sure?”
I sighed and gave them both a thumbs up and a smile though I didn’t really mean it. I was terrified but I couldn’t let them see it.
“I started this whole thing to get you your body back, to move on from you, Wyatt. If I don’t take this opportunity now then you could be lost forever. Plus, I doubt you wanna be stuck in Guy’s body again so…yeah.” I closed my eyes and breathed out slowly.
“This is it. This is what it’s all been leading up to.”
This time, the grin on my lips was real. They probably thought I was insane, and after all this I think I am too. But if I’m insane, that means I’m unpredictable. My body moved forward and my heart settled on the next bullshit idea that popped into my head. I gave Wyatt a long sideways glance and the most subtle wink I could manage.
“Sometimes, you just gotta trust the process.”
His eyes widened for a fraction of a second and he lowered his head, hiding a grin.
Valeria smiled. Though she was bleeding out, she was pleased to get what she wanted. She even tried crawling towards me but the boys blocked her path.
Rupert was practically salivating. Was he actually holding his arms out for me, like I would ever hug this motherfucker?!
“Finally!” He bounced on one foot like an excited child. “You have no idea how long I’ve been—”
I cut him off by grabbing him by the throat and hauling him up into the air. The look of pure shock on his face filled me with joy.
“Yeah, bet you never saw this coming, huh!” He kicked at my chest and clawed at my arm but I held on for dear life, determined to end this thing. Today.
I let go of his throat and tucked myself in low, sending both feet into his upper gut. He threw up everywhere but I didn’t care. I was beyond pissed, beyond all everyone’s bullshit.
He blocked my first hit but not the second or the third. My fist made love to his face as I punched him through building after building, collapsing each one in turn. Rupert's tail shot out, aiming to peirce my stomach. Dumb move, I was waiting for that.
“Have you always been such a dumbass?” I grabbed his tail, dragging it and him up into the sky again. I twirled him over my head like a baton girl at a football game. My plan was simple: beat the shit out of him and get all the information I needed for Barnaby. Wyatt had his body back, Midnight couldn’t save Rupert now.
Was it a good plan? Probably not. We roll with it anyway.
But it wasn’t Midnight that grabbed me by the hair and drove his knee into my back.
“No more holding back, destroyer.” Hyperion said, eyes blazing with fury as he watched Rupert scramble to safety.
“No!” My pulse quickened, I tried to free myself from his grasp but it wasn’t happening.
“It’s time for round 2!”
