Chapter 1288: Darling, Come Pick Me UpChapter 1288: Chapter 1288: Darling, Come Pick Me Up
Even though Summer Sutton didn’t understand the reason behind it, this was just how she was: the more Lorraine Hughes didn’t want her to go, the more she insisted on going against her.
With a slight smile, Summer said to Henry Hughes, "You’re really too kind, Mr. Hughes. I’m honored."
"Very good, very good." Henry chuckled, and immediately called home to have the chef start preparing the meal.
"What does Miss Sutton like to eat? I’ll have the chef get it ready." As he was on the phone, he turned his head and asked Summer.
"Anything’s fine." Summer answered with a smile.
"Then you can try my chef’s signature dishes!" Henry turned back and continued talking to the house staff on the phone.
He gave a lot of instructions; just the dish names Summer heard were in the dozens. It was obvious he was taking this invitation to Summer very seriously.
After he hung up, Henry got in the car first, then gestured for Summer to get in.
Lorraine stood there stiffly, as if she hadn’t quite processed what was happening.
Summer ignored her and walked past her into the car.
Even though she was somewhat guarded against Lorraine, Summer had no defenses up against Henry.
From this middle‑aged man’s eyes, Summer could feel he bore her no malice whatsoever.
Lorraine seemed to stand there dumbly for a few seconds before finally getting into the car as well.
On the way, Henry kept chatting with Summer.
He asked about her work, her life, how she grew up as a child—he asked a whole string of questions, and it was clear how much he cared about her.
Whatever he asked, Summer answered one by one.
When they arrived at the Hughes Family home, the three of them sat at a dining table over two meters long and had dinner together.
During the meal, Henry was still talking nonstop with Summer; every question he asked was about her.
The atmosphere between the two of them was warm and easy, to the point that compared to Lorraine, Summer actually felt more like his daughter.
Lorraine sat quietly watching from the side, her pale hands tightening hard around the knife and fork.
By the time Summer finished eating at the Hughes home, it was already ten o’clock.
At this hour, it wasn’t exactly early, but it wasn’t very late either.
The Hughes address wasn’t remote; she could still get a taxi from there.
Henry even suggested having the driver take Summer home, but Summer turned him down.
As she was leaving, Summer took out her phone and did something Lorraine never would’ve imagined.
She called Watt Bennet—the Watt who had been in a breakup limbo with her all these days.
"Watt, I’m at the Hughes place and about to head back. Do you want to come pick me up?"
Listening beside her, Lorraine’s body went a little rigid.
She was certain Summer was absolutely doing this on purpose!
Originally, because of Watt staying over at the Hughes home last time, Henry had been very supportive of her and Watt.
This call from Summer was basically announcing her claim of ownership right in front of the father and daughter!
And with how much Henry liked Summer, once he knew Watt was still with her, would he still help his own daughter?
Lorraine was shaken by Summer’s move. Turning her face to the side, her gaze stiffly shifted to Henry.
Henry was clearly also stunned by Summer’s call and didn’t come back to himself for quite a while.
He knew Summer and Watt had been together before, but he didn’t know the specifics of their relationship.
When Watt himself got the call, he was no less shocked than the Hughes father and daughter.
Holding the phone stiffly, he listened to Summer’s words, and it took him a long moment to snap out of it.
She had taken the initiative to call him, and even asked him to come pick her up...
